Summary
Raging Silence follows two generations of the Starling family as each member struggles to maintain
normalcy in a household of secrets, lies and festering tensions. Melena and Ernest Starling marry young, and
it is not long before their mutual loathing casts its pallor on their burgeoning family. Though they raise three
children together—Blackwell, Luke, and Elizabeth—the rift in their marriage colors every aspect of the
family’s life. Ernest is distant, spending most of his time at work or on other personal pursuits. Melena stays
at home, fostering her hatred for her philandering husband.
Blackwell and Luke, picture-perfect sons, pursue kart racing and excel in school. The hurt they feel
remains unspoken, like many other things in the Starling family. Elizabeth, on the other hand, outwardly
bears the scars of her circumstances—abused as a child and tormented by her parents’ constant fighting, she
drapes herself in black clothing and dark thoughts. As Elizabeth struggles to appease her increasingly
volatile mother, she comes to terms with her own anger and begins to seek a relationship with her estranged
father. But a painful and drawn-out divorce slowly consumes the Starlings, and the grown siblings are forced

About the Author
North Carolina native Amanda Stone is a graduate of North Carolina State University. She holds a red-level
ranking in Muay Thai, competes in Kung Fu, and taught kickboxing and women’s self defense classes at the
Raleigh Institute of Martial Arts for four years. A prolific performance artist, she may often be seen in local
avant-garde theater productions. Stone currently resides in Raleigh with her dog, Vicious, a small Maltese.
