Sustainable Purchasing Policy
The aim of this policy is to ensure that goods and services purchased for the
University are manufactured, delivered, used and managed at the end of life in an
environmentally responsible and sustainable manner and to minimise the social
impact of our purchasing actions.
The University aims to:
Comply with all relevant environmental legislation.
Reduce the requirement to purchase new products by cutting down on waste
and where practical repair or reuse existing products.
Use products that contain re-used or recycled materials.
Consider the costs of a product over its whole life span.
Use suppliers that are committed to environmental improvement.
Buy products that are ethically produced i.e. support our Fairtrade status.
Dispose of products in an environmentally safe manner.
The University’s Procurement Services section will:
Ensure that, where appropriate, environmental criteria are used in the award of
contracts.
Use whole-life costing in Tender Evaluations to achieve value for money and
assess the environmental costs over the life of the product/services offered.

Promote agreements that offer environmentally friendly product alternatives
wherever practical.
Work with the Estates Support Service (ESS) and others on the energy and
waste implications of products/services.
Share Best Practice with other HE institutions.
Provide training and awareness of the Sustainable Purchasing Policy.
Participate in the University Environment and Sustainability Committee.
