THE RULES!
AP LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION WITH THE ENGAGING MRS. ARNA CLARK
EMAIL: arna.clark@canyonsdistrict.org CLASS WEBSITE: www.arnaclark.weebly.com
OBJECTIVES: students will FULLY engage in intensive study of literature and composition in preparation for the AP Literature exam
AND for college level coursework beyond. Select movies & clips from PG or PG-13 films will be shown.
PHILOSOPHY: minimal participation, mediocre preparation, and maximum reliance on luck, divine intervention, osmosis, Sparks
Notes or similar study aides guarantee disappointing returns. Although preparing for the AP exam is a major goal, it is not the only
one. Acquiring an active mind ready for college and a compassionate, intelligent approach to life in general are rewards of
dedication and honest study.
GRADE SCALE:
A 94+% A- 90-93% B+ 87-89% B 83-86% B- 80-82% C+ 77-79%
C 73-76% C- 70-72 % D+ 67-69% D 63-66% D- 60-62% F 0-59%
Please email any questions/concerns about grades or any other issue to me from Skyward. Class time is simply too ephemeral for
personal conferences.
PARTICIPATION: participation points are often awarded for being actively engaged in classroom activities—I expect all students to
voice comments, questions, and opinions in every discussion. TARDIES are disrespectful, disruptive, and derelict. We will follow the
school attendance policy like bloodhounds.
TRUANCY: ludicrous idea-no make-up work allowed. Your qualifications for inclusion in the AP program include integrity and
dedication.
HOMEWORK: Expect about 1 hour of homework each night on average. Homework assignments are due at the beginning of class; if
you are absent the day the assignment is due, enlist a responsible person to submit it for you, or email it to
arna.clark@canyonsdistrict.org
LATE WORK: Late work is not accepted. The only exception is for an MLA process essay-students have until 3 p.m. the day the essay
is due to get it in the class basket. Exceptions for extreme circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
ABSENT WORK: All work (tests, quizzes, assignments) must be turned in within one week of the absence. Extended absences may
require special arrangements. Assignments turned in after one week of their original due dates will be jettisoned into the nearest
recycling receptacle or given to my second-grader to draw on.
EXTRA CREDIT: Extra credit each quarter may garner a maximum 5% grade boost. DO NOT implore for more.
THE FABULOUS WEEBLY: all calendars, announcements, and extra credit opportunities are posted on our class website at
www.arnaclark.weebly.com. You’re responsible to stay informed!
CLASSROOM RULES
1. No DISTRACTIONS: food (unless otherwise OK’d), drinks (water bottles OK), hats, phones, or technological gadgets. If the
edibles are chocolate, I’ll eat them…in front of you.
2. Keep the room CLEAN and please show RESPECT for everyone.
3. Come PREPARED with SUPPLIES: pens and pencils, hi-liters and/or colored pencils, paper, folder/binder, books currently
in use, Big Red (our class manual).
4. Come PREPARED with IDEAS & QUESTIONS relating to the reading assignments. Class discussion is mandatory and “I don’t
know” is not an option.
5. STAY in the classroom (no hallway lurking!) until the bell has rung to dismiss you.
6. Use the HALL PASS when leaving and remember to bring it back.
7. When I am talking, you are NOT but don’t fret…you’ll get ample time for airing your views.
8. Hands off my PERSONAL BELONGINGS please, including my “cushie” chair intended for women approaching 50.
9. RECYCLE. Save a tree and breathe a little easier.
10. HONESTY is expected. Shakespeare advised, “Neither a borrower nor a lender be...” So refrain from cheating by
"borrowing" someone else's answers or "lending" your work to another to copy…that’s cheating. PLAGIARISM (defined as
copying or paraphrasing someone else’s work without citing him/her as the source) is also considered cheating. DO NOT
be tempted to access the various Internet sites that provide ready-made essays. Cheating results in a “0” on the
assignment and a sullied soul. Refrain from constantly BORROWING paper and pencils from others: don’t be parasites.
Procure your own supplies.
11. For help with assignments or questions about your grades, email me or come in during late start!
12. Be COMMITTED to the class-read, write, listen, think, learn, expound vs. sleep, drool, daydream, wither, wane, atrophy.
