                      Note:
This document was created at the Savannah College
of Art and Design (Summer 2005) as a record of
research conducted for my final Industrial/Interaction
design project. The research, analysis, and
documentation phase spanned the first five weeks.
Though most of my work is collaborative, this project
was a sole effort with the support of the SCAD faculty.

When I began, I had fairly limited knowledge of
the mobile communications market, and as you may
soon note I dove in with gusto. The primary two goals
of this documentation were to capture the breadth
and nuances of the research in a more visual way,
and to serve as a summary and reference during
                      the design phases.

This exploration focuses on cell phone users age 14
through 18. This age group is not only an early
adopter of new technology, but has access to the
purchasing power of its parents. users:
Additionally, users age 14-18 are young enough that
they have been exposed to contemporary technology

for a significant portion of their lives, and therefore
likely have a core understanding of its language.

   Research Approach
     Information
The goal of the research phase was to gain a broad
understanding of the cellular market, current
communication methods, and the target market.

     Methods
Given the rapid pace of the project - 10 weeks -
research methods were chosen to gather the
maximum amount of quality information from a
                                                                Goal:
broad range of sources and perspectives.
Accessibility, cost, and time were all considered
when choosing methods and participants. To gain a broad understanding

This document is a summary of research communication methods, and
conducted, insight gathered, and the current
direction for design exploration. It is not intended the target market.
as a comprehensive record of information gathered.

     Further Study
Throughout the remaining project phases, research
will be conducted on an as-needed basis as time
allows. Given additional time and resources, further
study of the cellular market, communication
methods, and the target market with a focus on
     contextual research would be beneficial.

   Questionnaire- Cellular
Method: Questionnaires were distributed to users within
the target age range, and covered topics including cellular
                       use habits, attitudes, and preferences.

                       Insight:

Users contact friends and family the most, from a wide
variety of public and private locations, using mainly voice
                       calls and text messaging.

Communication features are used most often.
Organizational features such as a calendar are rarely
used, as well as the mobile internet.

Alternative communication methods include the home
phone and internet via a home computer.

Implications for design: The mobile phone is primarily
a communication device and need not be overloaded
with features to satisfy the user.

Usability and content of the current mobile internet is
poor, and prevents this age group from using it.

   Interviews- Cellular
Method: Hybrid think-aloud / interview sessions were
conducted with 3 users in the target age range. The
course of each session was tailored to the participant as
1 the conversation was allowed to flow in response to their
unique replies. Each participant was observed while
demonstrating tasks on their own phone, as well as
asked questions relating to the tasks, personal
                           preferences, and commonly conducted activities.

Insight: The features and services that they actually use
are more limited than what is available. Features and
services that they do not use are often not even explored
2 on the phone. Text input is difficult and frustrating.
Desired features are more important than phone size.

The camera is used for spontaneous photography. On-
phone media is associated with contacts based upon
relationship importance and contact frequency. Limited
memory capacity forces users to make trade-offs
                           between desired features.

3 Mobile internet content is not currently tailored to what
they want; they want to be able to access the same
information as on their personal computer.

and check the weather or whatever else.
1 Are those the things that you usually do?
Yeah, well, usually I check the weather.”

“We kind of have a family digital camera ... but I don’t,
like, carry it around with me so it’s good to have a

                           internet, what would you want?
3 Probably email or there’s Livejournal and Myspace,

                           Implications for design:
                  2
A mobile phone tailored to this age group should only
include features that they value, like entertainment and
communication features, and not include organizational
features. Memory capacity should be large enough to
prevent users from having to make tradeoffs in use.

A hierarchy of relationship importance is present, and
mobile internet content should relate to what they do on
                  3
their personal computers, such as blogging and
                           networking.

   Questionnaire- Lifestyle
Method: Questionnaires were distributed to users within
the target age range, and covered topics including
computer and internet use, mobility, online habits, digital
                       relationships, networking, and online personas.

                       Insight:

Cell phones are a constant companion.

The internet is used frequently, and is almost always
accessed from a computer. Online activities include
socializing through instant messaging, forums, and email,
as well as file sharing and accessing entertainment
                       information.

They are somewhat satisfied with information received
                       online,

Implications for design: Although their cell phones are
with them constantly, most of their digital socializing and
information accessing is conducted through a personal
computer. Information satisfaction could be improved by
providing the desired content in a timely manner.

   Expert Interviews
Method: Sometimes, the best way to understand
ourselves is to observe the ways in which we are different
from others. It is generally recognized that cellular
technology currently available in Asia is more advanced
that its American counterpart, so interviews were
conducted with two experts to reveal the differences
between American and Asian cellular users.

                       Insight:

American users want the operation methods for their cell
phones to be self-evident, and only use their favorite
features, while Asian users will invest more time in
learning the full functionality of their device. However,
“[even in Japan] they don’t use most of the ‘duhickies.”

                       Implications for design:

Although American and Asian users may have different
expectations for their cellular technology, maybe the way
people use technology across cultures is not as different
as we may initially think. It appears that, whatever
features and services a user may have access to or know
how to use, users will only actually use the ones that they
                       prefer.

Method: The in-store purchasing experience was
observed at Best Buy and Sprint stores in the Savannah,
GA area. Specific attention was paid to the store
environment, the phone testing experience, and

                                                                 Main Insights:

While shopping, consumers have a huge number of

phone. The materials and configuration of a phone are

   Usability Evaluation
Method: A usability evaluation of a Samsung A670
phone was conducted to obtain information about the
broad physical and digital interface structure, ease of use,
ergonomics, and available features and services.

                       Main Insights:

The clamshell design is difficult to open with one hand,
and buttons are difficult to distinguish from one another
                       without looking at the keypad.

The main menu has no hierarchy, so the user locates
desired features based upon the icon or location within
the grid. The large distance between the screen and top
row of buttons creates a weak association between
                       button and label.

                       Implication for design:

Increasing the height differentiation of all physical controls
as well as the sides of the clamshell body could greatly
increase usability, especially when the user is operating
the phone without looking at the interface.

   Manufacturers
Method: There are a vast amount of mobile phones
available, so an internet exploration was conducted with a
focus on devices with distinctive features.

                       Insight:

Trends in distinguishing features include twisting portions
of the device to open or view the display, sliding to reveal
number pad or qwerty keyboard, extremely slim designs,
large displays, and music capabilities. Motorola is
beginning to distinguish itself in market with provocative
designs like the Razr and Pebl V6 which appeal to the
                       consumer’s desire for style.

Internationally, phone designs are physically quite similar
to American products. Distinguishing form features are
mainly limited to slight shape differences and playful
                       colors.

Implication for design: Elegance of movement when
opening and using, as well as the overall form contributes
to a satisfying user experience. Style and uniqueness can
propel a product to the forefront of the market and create
                       excitement among consumers.

   Indirect Competitors
Method: An internet exploration was conducted to
explore related products which satisfy the same or similar
user needs as a cellular phone.

                       Insight:

There are a variety of products that satisfy entertainment,
communication, and organizational user needs, including
mp3 players, watches, photo and video cameras, laptop
computers, and pdas, as well as portable game decks,
gps systems, photo displays, and dvd players.

These products often overlap each other in features and
services. Few distinguish themselves from the mass of
devices that resemble shiny boxes with buttons.

                       Implication for design:

Categories of devices are beginning to blur. A product
that can distinguish itself by communicating its main
purpose, potentially in a new market segment, may draw
the attention of the over-saturated consumer.

   Service Providers
                       Method:

An internet exploration was conducted to assess the
online presence, brand, and the expressed target market
                       of major US providers.

                       Insight:

Providers appear to target either business, young, or
family subscribers. Cingular and T-Mobile target a
younger, more energetic and stylish consumer.

The service provider may often be the touch point for
buyers, rather than phone manufacturers. The service
provider’s brand is expressed when selling the phones,
diluting the brand message of the manufacturer.

                       Implication for design:

Manufacturers often do not have an opportunity to
communicate directly with the consumer, so a strong
communication of the brand message through form and
                       operation is required.

   Features & Services
Method: An internet exploration was conducted to gain
an understanding of available features and services in the
                       US market.

                       Insight:

There are a huge amount of features and services
available, with new ones emerging at a rapid rate.
Features generally fall into one of three categories:
                       communication, entertainment, or personal organization.

                       Services enable communication through multiple
methods, which are generally divided into voice,
                       messaging, browsing, streaming, and location
                       identification.

                       Implication for design:

Including features and services simply because they are
available may not add value to a device; instead, using
them as needed to provide value to a user will prevent
overloaded and confusing device configurations and
increase user satisfaction with the product experience.

   Information Content
Method: An internet exploration was conducted to
understand current methods for exchanging unique online
                       content.

Insight: Blogging has been a popular activity for a while,
but mobile blogging, which allows users to post rich
content from anywhere, is beginning to gain ground.
Podcasting, which enables users to publish their own
audio content to the web for download is also becoming
popular with its recent integration into itunes.

Folksonomy, a bottom-up approach to online content
tagging, enables users to create networks with others
                       through personally selected tagged content.

Weatherbug, a service provided by Sprint to mobile
                       customers, streams personalized, neighborhood-level
                       weather content to users.

Implication for design: Mobile content creation and
sharing opens up a huge new area of opportunity for
cellular devices. User created tagging of that content
enables mobile networking, which could in turn move
digital socializing off the home PC. Locale-based content
provides increased value and satisfaction to users.

   Social Networking
Method: An internet exploration was conducted to
asses current digital methods for social networking.

                       Insight:

Online services such as Friendster and MySpace combine
blogging, rich personal profiles, interest groups, and
discussion boards within user-created social networks.

Mobile phone services such as Nokia’s Sensor provide
users with an intermediary to promote locale-based
socializing. Using the bluetooth connection on mobile
phones, Sensor connects users through personal profiles,
media sharing, and messaging, and also includes security
                       settings.

Implication for design: Online social networking
services attract users by enabling rich, personalized
content in their networks. These services are beginning
to emerge on mobile phones, but still remain an
afterthought. A mobile phone designed with these
services in mind from its conception, and marketed as
such, would provide a unique feature to users.

                              exchange methods.

                              Insight: Provocative emerging technologies enable
information transmission through the human body (Bone
                              conduction, Fingerwhisper, and Mime speech

called Ethertouch allows user input information without
                              touching the device.

                              Other technologies include Electromagnetic Induction,
which enables multiple devices to be charged through
wireless transmission of power, IBM’s Shark, which allows
users to trace paths between letters on a virtual keyboard
to input information, and LG’s new touch pad with
fingerprint identification capabilities can be used on a

New technologies can be used to increase the usability of
new devices, as well as to increase the range of user

mobile phones. Flash has the added benefits of smaller
file sizes and rich multimedia content.

MSN and Vodafone announced on June 30, 2005 that
they have entered into an agreement to enable PC to

general trends for the age group were identified.

                               Insight:

Main trends include digital relationship development and
                               maintenance, being constantly connected through
technology, a desire for reduced intrusion of technology
on their daily lives, and value placed upon technology that
                               simply works properly.

Additionally, this age group wants to participate in the
content that they receive from mass media outlets, wants
to be ‘in’ or ahead of the pack, and would like to see their
individual style reflected in the technology that they buy.

                               Implication for design:

Relationships, participation, simplicity, and style are all
important to this age group. These trends are grounded
in real human needs and wants; unlike fads, they are
long-lasting. If they are successfully addressed in a
product, the potential for a resounding success is huge.

   Contemporary Theory
Method: A variety of printed sources were consulted to
gain an understanding of new and relevant theories of
                       information organization and sociology.

                       Theory and Implications for design:

The 3rd place, discussed in The Great Good Place by
Ray Oldenburg, is a familiar public hangout such as a
coffee-shop that people voluntarily visit (In contrast to the
first and second places, home and work, that people
must go to.) Oldenburg asserts that these places are
essential for the health of societies because people not
only maintain ongoing relationships there but also develop
new ones. Technology will either continue to destroy
these places, or could be used to help promote these
kinds of interactions in potentially new ways; it is up to us.

Howard Rheingold asserts in his book Smart Mobs that,

wireless communications,” enables people that have
never met to take action together. Mobile devices must
address the social ramifications of this new
communication method which is already significant and

   Contemporary Theory

Theory and Implications for design (continued):

Network theory specifies that all people, web pages, or
other entities are connected through a short chain of
other connected entities. (The social networking
perspective has been popularized as ‘6 degrees of Kevin
Bacon’.) Mobile information organization could be
structured to maximize this interconnectivity of people
                       and content.

The theory of emergence, as discussed in Steve
Johnson’s book Emergence, observes that higher level
patterns or unique demonstrations develop from the
alignment or coordination of lower level participating
entities. For example, the coordinated blinking of groups
of fireflies is not controlled by any one fly, but simply
emerges as they harmonize with one another. This
phenomenon could be applied to information organization
by removing the control of mass media on public
information and allowing individual interest and activity to
                       determine what is most important.

                           doesn’t use that feature.

                           Internet:
“It’s just not convenient ... it’s not like you can go

-Wants the mobile internet to be easy to use, and
to be able to find the content that she wants, not

It would depend ... like, if there wasn’t text
messaging on a smaller phone, I would probably
have to go with this one; a smaller phone with the
features I use would be preferable.”
-The right functionality is more important than the
                           size of the phone.

                           Opening and closing:

careful closing it if you’re in a movie theatre.”

Participants were all part of a week-long summer
program for high school students at the Savannah
College of Art and Design during week 4 of this
project. This group was chosen because time
restrictions required efficient access to a large group
of users within the target age range.

Participants were asked to complete a 4-page
                       questionnaire. Questions covered topics including
computer and internet use, mobility, online habits,
                       digital relationships, networking, and online
                       personas. 11 students voluntarily participated.

                       Note:
It is recognized that the limited sample size of both
this questionnaire group as well as the cellular
questionnaire group that follows does not allow
broad, definitive conclusions to be drawn for the age
group. However, the insight into lifestyles and
preferences reveals common ground to direct
                       design decisions.

   Expert Interviews
Sometimes, the best way to understand ourselves is
to observe the ways in which we are different from
others. It is generally recognized that technology, and
specifically cellular technology, currently available is
Asia is more advanced that its American counterpart.

Interviews with two Americans with experience in both
markets revealed some interesting differences and
similarities in available features and services, habits of
   use, and cultural attitudes.

The first interview was with Daniel Gloyd, a User
Interface Manager at the Samsung LA Design Lab. A
broad question was asked via email to investigate,
“the differences between Asian and US consumer
attitudes and behaviors, technologies, and available
services, as well as how (and if) products are
translated from the Korean market to the US.”

The second interview was conducted with Leslie
Chicoine, an American residing in suburban Japan
while teaching English to Japanese students. She
provided some insight into daily use and attitudes via
   instant message from Japan.
                                                                     selected excerpts

time invested in learning the UI of their devices. While
American consumers want to rip the thing out of

   In-store Observation
The in-store purchasing experience was observed at
Best Buy and Sprint stores in the Savannah, GA
area. Specific attention was paid to the store
environment, the phone testing experience, and
information presentation of available features and

The observation was conducted from the perspective
of a busy shopper, with limited time to spend testing
   available products.

Photography and other recording methods were
strictly prohibited at all locations, so detailed notes

thoughts and impressions were recorded in more
detail promptly after the observation session.

First, I'd like for you to go through the series of steps that it takes to make a call It was on there when I got the phone and I pretty much took advantage of that
Alright, generally I have to unlock my keys
and it's blue button (menu) and then #, I mean star 00:01:57

confuses # and star buttons Internet access. I don't know how I'm really supposed to do it, but I always just go to
then either just dial the number, and hit the green button my gallery and gallery downloads, and there's more bookmarks and I've got all my other
glare on screen from overhead lights makes it impossible to see internet access on here

or hit the blue button up here (right menu button) to find my contacts personalized menu list is very long
i can just hit the green button to call one of them then I just go online and get ringtones, and wallpapers and check the weather or
                                                                                                  whatever else
   00:00:44
Do you just run down the phone list when you're looking for someone? Are those the things that you usually do?
No, you can hit the contacts button, hit find, and then the first letter of their name Yeah, well, usually I check the weather

Do you usually use this? 00:02:28
Yeah, I usually just hit this button (find) because there are too many to scroll Do you do anything like check email?
through I don't do that very much, but I have done AIM on my phone

What features do you use the most often on this phone? Um, I get messages from people on AIM pretty often, and I usually reply to them, so yea.
   Probably text messaging

Let's beginning; please show me how you go about making a call to someone in Do you use all of those features?
your phone book I don't have the pictures set to the people because it only holds a certain number of

and you can go 'take a video' but I think I have... No.
you can take two videos only, so it's not that much, and they're each a couple
seconds long You said there was voicemail; do you use the voicemail?
Yeah, I use the voicemail. You press star86 to get to your voicemail account and
   00:04:10 then you just...
Do you ever send the photos or the videos off of your phone? People can leave messages if your phone if off people can leave a message
I usually keep them to myself, but I have sent them to people's emails and stuff and then if you turn it on it rings and little thing will pop up that says voicemail or
before, like if I take a picture of something that I think they would be interested in whatever or you have a message

   00:04:28 00:06:15
Now, do you have a separate digital camera or video camera? Is there anything about this phone or cell phones in general that intrudes on your
Um, yeah, I have a video camera, and I don't have a digital camera but we kind of life or bugs you or you wish was different?
have a family digital camera that everyone pretty much uses, so I usually use that Um, well, where I live, on the street that I live on we get really bad service, but um
for most of my pictures, but I don't, like, carry it around with me so it's good Verizon is really good actually...
having a camera phone because I know some people who get even worse service
so if I see something I can just take a picture my phone usually gets service pretty much everywhere
so there's nothing really that I would say intrudes on my life
   00:04:54
So this is for more like spur-of-the-moment...
   Yeah

Do you ever switch back and forth between a really loud ringer versus other
   things?
Yeah, you can change the volume of your ringer; you can go into your setup, and
you have display, you can change it, you can change the front display, which is on
   here
closes flip to show small front screen
   with the clock, um, whoops
display went back to main screen when she closed the flip, so she
navigates back to what she was showing me
or you can, like, change your sounds, like from volume to vibrate, or you can
   make it really loud
chooses that option and sample ringer goes off, obscuring her voice on
   tape
or you can go all the way down
reduces volume in steps, with sample playing automatically each time

   00:07:47
Do you ever make those changes?
Yeah, sometimes I do, like I have it where if I'm somewhere where I'm not
supposed to like have my phone on or whatever, like in the movies, I usually
change it to vibrate so it doesn't make the sound, but I still know if somebody is
   calling me
and if I'm somewhere where I know it's going to be really loud I usually put it up
   kind of loud

Please show me the process that you go through to call someone who is in your Do you call people or text message or use another method most often?
phonebook. Um usually call people, if i'm in somewhere then text messaging
OK, I just open the phone, press the middle button in here, it's the menu, and
then you press, no... So when it went black right there, what was that?
and then you have to go down one to the phonebook, which is sort of annoying, That's just what happens when you're not using the screen, after a couple
but you have to go through, find the contact you want, press call, and it's done seconds it will go black
   00:00:38
                                                                                           And that animation...
Is that a picture of the person? That came with the phone
Yeah, that's a picture of the person you're calling
                                                                                           00:02:15
So this is a camera phone that you have? What else do you use?
Yep. They have AIM on the phone
its slightly expensive so I dont use that very often
Do you do that (assign pics) to a lot of your contacts? um, you have videos and pictures and
The ones that I call often and have pictures of just starts running down the list...
and sounds, which I use, like, (and) the pictures for when you're calling people
00:00:56 and just random pictures when you feel like it
What else do you use frequently on your phone?
   Um, text messaging... 00:02:40
Do you have a separate digital camera?
Can you should me the process to send on of those? Yes, I do, but I actually broke it, so...
OK, you go back to the menu, it's already on the texting or messages thing; go I dont use this as a camera, it's just for things on the phone
there, it's write new and you choose text message obviously, and just type in
whatever you want to type in with the keys. 00:03:07
What can you tell me about stuff you don't like on the phone?
How easy or difficult is it to type a text message? Um, I;m trying to see, stuff I don't like
Um, well, it's sort of annoying because you have three letters on one button so It's kind of annoying, call list, but, it's all you calls, so answered, called, and
you have to work at it to make sure you're getting the right thing missed, but what happens in when a person's called you it just puts how many
and you mess up a lot times, and it doesn't tell you each time, so that's sort of annoying, you only
you do have the option where you can get the writing language that suggests know the last time they called
things, but that's always annoying because you never get what you want.

   So do you use that?
No, I just type it out...which takes a while

Do you call people or text message or use another method most often? Do you ever use the internet? Is that an option on there?
Um usually call people, if i'm in somewhere then text messaging It is an option, and I've used it to download a ringtone but I've never used it for
                                                                                               anything else
So when it went black right there, what was that? Why do you not use it for other stuff?
That's just what happens when you're not using the screen, after a couple well, It's just not convenient and there's nothing really, its not like you can go
seconds it will go black wherever you want, It's more just like you're shopping in their store for options,
but there's no real internet, i dont know, i've never tried
   And that animation...
That came with the phone 00:06:29
If you could access any kind of information using the internet, what would you
   00:02:15 want?
What else do you use? Probably email or there's live journal and myspace, stuff like that you use daily on
They have AIM on the phone your own computer
its slightly expensive so I dont use that very often Um, yeah, this only provides what Cingular set up
um, you have videos and pictures and
just starts running down the list... 00:07:01
and sounds, which I use, like, (and) the pictures for when you're calling people You mentioned that you want your phone to 'just work.' Can you tell me a bit
and just random pictures when you feel like it about what that would be like?
Um, my phone recently has been dropping a lot of calls; I put it on my bed and I
00:02:40 woke up and the screen was completely blank and I don't know why and so I had
Do you have a separate digital camera? to wait three or four hours before it started working again
Yes, I do, but I actually broke it, so... it just does random things that keep you from being able to use it; it drops calls,
I dont use this as a camera, it's just for things on the phone doesn't send things, but i guess that just goes with new technology, it just happens
                                                                                               some times.
   00:03:07
What can you tell me about stuff you don't like on the phone? 00:07:40
Um, I;m trying to see, stuff I don't like It's a rather large phone, just big and chunky, so it doesn't fit well in pockets, it's a
It's kind of annoying, call list, but, it's all you calls, so answered, called, and nice phone, and its a relatively good size, but it's a little big, just bulky
missed, but what happens in when a person's called you it just puts how many

If you had to choose between a smaller size or more features, which would you
   choose?
It would depend on which features there weren't, like if there wasn't text
messaging on a smaller phone, I would probably have to go with this one
   (bigger)
But a smaller phone with the features I use would be preferable

   00:08:23
And you would you want it to be slimmer?
Um probably just a little slimmer and a little less tall

How do you like the flip?
I like it, it's nice, it makes it bigger and everything, but um, sometimes it's a little
annoying, it's a little noisy, so you have to be real careful in closing it if there's a
   movie theatre or something

Do you ever have trouble opening or closing it?
   No, it's relatively easy
