SSD beamtest 2004

All controls should run on the computer marked SSD, epaitbeam01, in the control room.

Login its, password its123.

Switching on power for the modules

Type caen_control in a terminal window. Now the welcome screen of the caen power

supply should appear. Press enter and login (username guest, password guest).

The status display appears. The first six channels are for the low voltage power for the

electronics in the modules and the endcaps. The next two channels are the bias supplies for

the sensors.

Switching on (press spacebar) should be done in order from the first channel up to the eighth

channel. Powering down should be done in the reverse order.

The sensor bias for both modules should be set to 60 V. Depending on the temperature a bias

current between 1 and 3 µA is normal. The other channels should be at 5 V.

The first and fourth channel draw about 80 mA, the other low voltage channels should show

about 320 mA (when the chips are biased).

In order to prevent accidental change of the settings it is recommended to logoff from the

caen crate when the controls are not needed. Type , press ENTER to show the pull

down menu, select logoff and press enter again.

JTAG control for the modules

If the DCS panel is not shown already type dcs in a terminal. The password is beam2004.

Then type dcs again and the control panel for the SSD JTAG should appear. Click on TAP 2,

then click Start to prepare the modules for data taking.

The display should show 48 HAL25 and 14 ALCAPONE chips. If not, try the reset and start

buttons. If the number of chips is still not correct the power to the hybrids may be off or there

is a hardware problem.

If, for some reason, the DCS computer has been rebooted, type startConsole instead of the

second dcs, it will bring the PVSS console. From here, click on the green light to start the

system and the DCS Panel should appear. Then follow the above instructions.

Starting a run

Run control is done centrally if all three detectors are running together. For standalone

running of the SSD, Run control and SSD-DCA should be unlocked on the ECS terminal

The modules should be powered and configured before the run is started.

To obtain the trigger and run control panels type DCARUN ssd. From the panel that appears,

select the run control panel in the view menu.

To organise where the data are written: select Connected Run Parameters > LDC >

recording_device : /data2/ssd/ssddata#.dat. Now the filename is automatically updated

with the run number. Do not forget to click recording enabled in Start Processes.

For data taking, in the run control panel click start processes and then click start.

To start the trigger the start command under the LTU button has to be selected.

The run should be started before the trigger is started.

Stopping a run

The run control panel should be shown already, otherwise see under “Starting a run”.

First the trigger should be stopped. Select the stop command under the LTU button in the

trigger control panel. Then go to the run control panel and click stop.

Monitoring

Type startMood in a terminal window in the ~/slavoo directory. Then go to: detector >

testbeam2004 > SSD. To connect to the DAQ click the start button in the lower left corner.

Then click start scan.

To update the plots it is necessary to click on Update and then on the plot you want to see.

Automatic update of the plots does not work yet. Several panels with plots are available.

The monitoring program can also generate files for configuration of the zero suppression in

the FEROM. The buttons in the top row of the pedestals display are available to reset to

running without zero suppression and to save the calculated pedestals and noise*3 as offsets

and thresholds for the FEROM. These settings will be in effect automatically at the next start

of run.

Changing the trigger

Changing the trigger configuration should only be done in “standalone running”.

Login to the LTU: ssh trigger@trgalice2004, password tb2004. Type ltu ssd. Now the

trigger configuration menu should appear.

Click CTP and change the trigger source. At each start of run the trigger configuration is

automatically reset to the beam trigger.

Hardware configuration

The FEROM has modules 2 and 6 installed. In the raw data the addresses in the following

table are translated to module positions.

FEROM Modules

Module ADC Channels Ladder Module Side

2 0 0-767 1 1 = HIP39 N

768-1535 2 = HIP09 N

1 0-767 1 2 = HIP09 P

768-1536 1 = HIP39 P

6 0 0-767 2 1 = HIP11 P

768-1536 2 = HIP08 P

1 0-767 2 2 = HIP08 N

768-1536 1 = HIP11 N

beam

To the best of my knowledge the beam is positive, pions, 120 GeV/c.
