M ARKETING CASE STUDY – LAHEY CONSTRUCTIONS
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE
Strategic Marketing spearheaded a new phase for Lahey Constructions which began four y ears ago
with a repositioning strategy . Lahey was known as a local, Kempsey based family owned
construction business operational for at least fifty y ears. The aim of the strategy was to promote
Lahey in the short and long term by establishing a strong, modern corporate identity . The challenge
was communicating how the business had ev olv ed and required refinement of the brand from a
dated brand mark into a holistic brand with a modern identity reflecting a business capable of
building multiple projects in excess of $20 million.
THE APPROACH
Critical to the success of the strategy was repositioning the brand through an established strategy
and selecting the core client relationships to re-ignite and nurture before lev eraging existing
accreditations across all lev els of gov ernment and gov ernment funded entities to driv e the business
dev elopment direction. Recognising that a dated perception existed the repositioning approach
inv olv ed a multi-pronged rollout to include activ ity across the business – highly v isual activ ity
included site adv ertising (v ia signage and uniforms) to an ov erhaul of all communications.
A brand proposition was dev eloped: Excellence in Construction. which was adopted into all
communications which lev eraged Lahey ’s successes in the Master Builders Association (MBA) awards
for excellence.
Critical sy stems were also dev eloped to underpin efforts which included the dev elopment of
marketing processes and procedures. Operationally , databases were constructed and staff trained to
support business dev elopment and reporting mechanisms were initiated for reporting statistics and
mapping sales through a ‘dashboard’ for senior management team meetings.

The result of the strategy was both gratify ing and lasting. The business doubled in turnov er posting
an increase from $46 million in 2006/07 to $74 million in 2010/11. The customer base was div ersified
which mitigated risk. The brand re-positioning approach was well adopted and Lahey is a recognised
brand across NSW.

M ARKETING CASE STUDY – PROSPERITY PERSONAL AND CORPORATE ADVISERS
OBJECTIVE
Prosperity Personal and Corporate Adv isers (Prosperity Advisers) was borne out of a merger between
a high profile Newcastle based accountancy firm and a respected financial planning business. The
company employ s more than 100 people across 3 offices (Sy dney , Newcastle, and Brisbane) and
prov ides products across nine serv ices including a separate business entity – Salary Packaging. With
a well-established client base, Prosperity required strategic marketing dev elopment to re-engage
with customers and position itself as a market leader for financial serv ices.
THE APPROACH
The approach for customer re-engagement initiated with the dev elopment of a brand strategy and
identification of a cornerstone v alue proposition ‘One point of contact backed by a team of experts’.
The approach included the rollout of satisfaction surv ey s, focus groups and one-on-one interv iews
with staff, clients and suppliers to ascertain common perception threads. Once established, the
v alue proposition was integrated within ev ery aspect of operations including the alignment of
position descriptions to reflect responsibilities for nominated ‘Principal Adv isers’. A communications
strategy was dev eloped to cement the brand position with a focus on improv ing Prosperity ’s
customer base and building equity in their brand. The communication expression focussed on
building perception in the v alue proposition e.g. One team, one plan. Very efficient, very powerful .
The business goal was to be customer-centric, deliv er v alue and grow into the largest priv ately
owned financial serv ices firm in Australia.
RESULTS
In the three and a half y ears since the firm was established and the v alue proposition was integrated
into the way Prosperity conducted business; they hav e experienced robust growth in turnov er,
profitability and staff numbers and won a number of industry awards including BRW fastest growing
in Australia (2009), Employ er of Choice (2006) and Asset Magazine Innov ation Awards (2006).
