Borland Beefs Up Java Software, Targets EJB Market
Susie Harwood

"We are not going at the application server market as a whole like IBM and BEA do. We see the
market as a spectrum - there are web application servers, and there are pure application servers for
developing and deploying applications." (Frank Slootman, VP of products at Borland)
"Borland puts itself in the latter category [pure application servers for developing and deploying
applications], and its new Java platform is designed specifically to make more complex EJB
development and deployment simpler. While EJB development is a relatively small market at the
moment, industry analyst Meta Group said it expects EJBs to increase to 40% of total applications
by 2003 from their current share of 10%."
Borland Takes J2EE Tools Mainstream - Syncs release of JBuilder, Enterprise Studio;
creates new app server suite
Alan Zeichick
November 15, 2001
http://www.sdtimes.com/news/042/story4.htm
"Borland Software Corp…has recently revamped both its Java application server and development
tool suites, and for the first time has synchronized the products’ releases."
"A challenge facing the Java industry, Slootman said, is that 90 percent of applications currently
being developed are servlets and Java Server Pages, while only 10 percent are Enterprise JavaBeans.
Borland’s prediction is that by 2003, EJBs will constitute 40 percent of applications being developed
and deployed, and that’s the market the company is targeting."

"The recent announcement has brought a new version of JBuilder to the market with an improved
design capability that aims to provide easy point-and-click construction for Enterprise JavaBeans.
With the new JBuilder release comes the Borland Enterprise Server. The Enterprise Server comes in
Web, AppServer and VisiBroker editions. This combination provides a strong link between the
JBuilder development environment and Borland’s own application server."

"Good as the pro-.NET arguments sound, the arguments in favor of J2EE are equally numerous. A
key, says Frank Slootman, VP of product solutions at Borland , is that J2EE has been around for a
half-dozen years, it's stable, proven technology that is supported by multiple vendors and, therefore,
there is no vendor lock-in. For users, this means they can shop around, solicit bids from various
vendors, kick a lot of tires, and keep hunting until exactly the right vendor and solution emerge."

"Borland AppServer adds value to a business by reducing the time-to-market for e-business
applications and by offering increased productivity, performance and availability during the
development and deployment process. These metrics can be key to the success of a project, or even
that of an entire business in this fast-moving environment, and it is important to ensure that the
chosen deployment solution can meet the future scalability that may be required for a particular
application."
"Borland's AppServer is a technically excellent application server product, which includes all of the
features necessary to achieve robust scalability for demanding e-business applications."
Borland Rolls Out J2EE-Based Platform

"Borland Software Corp. sees Java as the future of application development, and on Monday the
Scotts Valley, Calif., company rolled out a new platform based on Java 2 Enterprise Edition that
includes current technology and new offerings."
"Borland executives said the Borland J2EE Enterprise Edition will both meet current needs and also
fuel future adoption of Java in the enterprise, including the migration from the popular Java
servlet/JSP technology to the more robust Enterprise Java Beans."
"Another example of [driving J2EE into the mainstream for enterprises of all sizes] is in the
AppServer Edition of the Borland Enterprise Server, a J2EE 1.3-compliant application server that
includes partitioning technology. Partitioning enables businesses to run applications independently
and to run hundreds of applications on a single server, allowing companies to scale the applications
as needed, Borland officials said. The AppServer and VisiBroker editions are both aimed at large-
scale, EJB-based applications. On the other hand, the new entry-level Web edition features a low
price—$399 per server—aimed at businesses deploying applications using Java servlets or JSP."

"The new partitioning architecture in Borland's application server also lowers the hardware
requirements for running applications and makes it easier to manage the application, enabling
organizations to utilize the appropriate resources for the application. Given the current need to keep
costs down, this could be an appealing message to the market, said Kathleen Quirk, an analyst at

ability within one application server to run several application servers. The benefits are increased
security and reliability, because if one application crashes it doesn't bring down the whole server."

rated Borland's AppServer on a par with BEA's WebLogic server in terms of its support for industry
standards, scalability and reliability and the ease with which it could be deployed."
"IBM's WebSphere rival scored well, but was let down by a slightly lower mark for ease of

Web Services standards, including XML, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI to leverage current resources
and participate in the development of industry standard concepts and processes. Borland also plans

"The most exciting thing about technology today isn’t its ability to allow people to talk to people, or
even for people to talk to computers; it’s the ability to allow computers to talk to each other." (Ted
Shelton, chief strategy officer for Borland on Web services)
Alister Sutherland, software strategic acquisition consultant at IDC Canada in Toronto, agrees
[enterprises are going to have to make use of both Java and .Net.] and said that the trend of getting
an interoperable system has been growing for some time.
"'It is certainly not naive because that is what has been happening for the last little while,' he said of
Borland’s strategy. 'When we first started looking at the Internet and its business applications, what
you are really talking about is the Web-enabling of business processes. That might sound like a nice,
neat and tidy concept, but in fact it’s a very complex thing because there are so many different
systems that are in resident in an organization that don’t currently work together.'"

"Borland’s strategy is to equip developers and businesses with tools to develop applications that are
platform-agnostic and allow legacy systems to interoperate…There are three core areas that we as a
business are engaged in with our customers: development, deployment and management." (Ted
Shelton, chief strategy officer for Borland)
"[Ted Shelton] said its Borland strategy to adhere strictly to Web services standards such as Simple
Object Access Protocol (SOAP), Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI),
Extensible Markup Language (XML) and Web Services Description Language (WSDL)…While
Microsoft has helped to establish Web services standards with other large vendors such as IBM,
Kevin Dean, a developer using Borland tools with Mississauga, Ont.-based Dolphin Data
Development Ltd., said he doesn’t have much faith in Microsoft to adhere to those standards long
term, even internally. 'What’s defined as a standard today may not necessarily integrate with the
standards of tomorrow," he said, and added that Microsoft traditionally has not offered easy
migration paths.'"

"Speaking at Borland's annual BorCon conference in Melbourne, chief strategy officer Ted Shelton
said the software vendor had deliberately set out to become less US-centric, with 60 per cent of its
revenues now coming from international markets. Shelton also said that with new products released
in mid-November, more profits can be expected from the vendor. 'You have our commitment to
run this company in a fiscally responsible manner,' he said."

Justice Dept, Microsoft Reach Settlement
John R. Wilke, Rebecca Buckman and Don Clark
November 2, 2001
"Dale Fuller, chief executive of Borland Software Corp., argued that the Justice Department
shouldn't settle such an important case in the emotional environment following Sept. 11. Borland, of
Scotts Valley, Calif., makes programming tools that compete with Microsoft's, some of them based
around the Java technology from Sun Microsystems Inc. that played an important role in the case. 'It
really is unfortunate [if] we basically do not force Microsoft to become more open,' Mr. Fuller said.
'We are preventing advances in technology from reaching consumers.'"

Borland provides software for ACM Programming Contest
November 21, 2001
"Borland Software Corporation today announced its sponsorship of Borland software at the ACM
International Collegiate Programming Contest Asia Regional Contest Shanghai, hosted by Shanghai
University. According to Husen Tu, General Manager of Borland Greater China, 'We are pleased to
be sponsoring genuine software to this world largest and high-level programming contest for
graduates. Borland is committed in providing technological training to the new generation.'"
INDUSTRY ANALYST HIGHLIGHTS
Gartner, Inc.
Theresa Lanowitz
"By 2005, we believe 80% of all new software projects will make use of hosted development
services. As development continues to increase across geographic, functional, and corporate
boundaries, hosted development services become increasingly attractive because they offer massive
potential cost savings as well as allow organizations to focus exclusively on creating next-generation
products."
Mark Driver
"Java has become a mainstream platform for enterprise development and deployment. As
development teams continue to adopt Java as the standard, solutions that shorten the learning curve
to broaden the number of programmers without sacrificing functionality will win the loyalty of the
enterprise and increase market share."
Research Note: 2002 Java IDE Vendor Magic Quadrant
Mark Driver & Joseph Feiman
"Measured by the number of units deployed, Borland (JBuilder) is the most popular Java IDE
tracked by Gartner. Borland's return to profitability has allayed concerns expressed by many
regarding its financial stability. Its early market support for J2ME strengthens an already robust
vision for J2SE and J2EE platform features. Moreover, JBuilder enjoys considerable support among
third-party technology providers that integrate their own products directly in the toolset. Borland
remains the vendor of choice for many developers looking for a best-of-breed IDE focused on
"heads-down," intensive code development and leading-edge Java technology support."

Report: "Borland Posts First J2EE ECperf Results: Still King of the Hill After 30 Days"
John Meyer
November 27, 2001
"Given the fact that the majority of the leading application server vendors have already been into
Sun's testing facilities and run the ECperf Benchmark with their own products and now have an
official number to compare their results to, there can only be one conclusion as to why they have
not posted a result. Giga believes that the lack of ECperf results clearly indicates that the leading
vendors products did not perform as well as their previous benchmarks had indicated and definitely
not well enough to beat Borland's official benchmark."
Mike Gilpin
"…building Web services is not trivial, and anything the vendors can do to ease the process goes a
long way." [In response to Ken Jochims' comment that another major focus area for J2EE (Java 2
Enterprise Edition) 1.3 is easing Web services creation.]

Kathleen Quirk
"The new partitioning architecture in Borland's application server also lowers the hardware
requirements for running applications and makes it easier to manage the application, enabling
organizations to utilize the appropriate resources for the application. Given the current need to
keep costs down, this could be an appealing message to the market."
Meta Group
Thomas Murphy
"As the shift towards EJB-based applications continues to gain significant momentum, vendors who
deliver productive, user-friendly development solutions will gain market share in the broader J2EE
application server market. The leading J2EE vendors will provide developers with a broad set of
solutions that support multiple deployment platforms and that provide a richly integrated set of
tools to boost productivity."
"In many ways, Borland refocused and they really understand what developers need."
Ovum
Bola Rotibi
"Borland has the right idea in bundling development elements into one product."
