Adding Mime types – notes on doing this on Development Server, Jan 23, 2007

I was using a web page (see instruct.ehc.edu… Angel… Admin user Doc…. Mime types ) and it’s

documentation looked a little different from what I saw.

1) I was logged in as hbaya/ehc and could not see programs/administrative tools. I logged out and

logged back in as administrator (PW angel) and then saw the tools)

2)

I then clicked on “Administrative Tools”

I then clicked on Internet Information Services

As instructed, I opened up the items till I could see “Default Web Site”. This is referred to in

the documentation as the “domain” . * I suppose we could have more than one domain on this

server and that they could be accessed from outside once we get the appropriate configuration

and settings here an on the E&H Network.

The next step is to right click on the domain and click properties.

Then click HTTP Headers and “Mime Types”

Click Mime types

Click “New…”

Now I need to enter the extension and MIME type. That could be interesting.

I cannot help but wonder whether “msword” is correct for this machine. I looked at the .exe

files on this machine and found:

I will test this change to see if it works with the msword entry.

It occurred to me that I would like to see what the current acceptable MIME types are. I don’t

see how to do this. I can only see the one I added.

IMPORTANT:

I tested uploading and downloading a .docx file with the Mime type entry

It came back down as a “.doc” file… weird!

I then changed it to application/winword and it came down as a docx application.

I will now see what happens with Excel.

Well.. I was doing OK up till now… but now….I am truly confused.

The Excel file (.xlsx) worked fine.. but then I also tried out a .pptx file. I have not entered a

mime type for this… yet it worked fine. I am pretty confused….

However, I also put in a mime type of .baya = text/plain and it worked as I expected from a

message on the listServ. It opened as text. I then put in file with a suffix of “.bxza”. I had NOT

put this mime type. As expected, it uploaded the file, but would not download it.

I believe that I now need to go put in the mime types on the main serve… and restart the

server… I do worry about when I should do that.. and what kind of a problem it will cause.

I think a webpage can stay open. I will test right now

Now to restart the IIS application.

I did this with “iisreset” *after mistyping it and thinking that caps mattered…they don’t +
