Microsoft Excel 2007/2010: How to Use Templates in Excel
Excel 2007/2010 provides predesigned templates, worksheets for common uses. Templates
contain standard or boilerplate text, but you can modify the templates to fit your needs. You can
use the templates automatically installed with Excel 2007/2010, or you can download free
templates from the Microsoft Office Online Web site. Many additional templates are available
for downloading.
Using Installed Templates
Follow these steps to use one of the templates that come installed with Excel 2007/2010:
1. Click Office Button/File and then click New.
2. The New Workbook dialog box appears.
3. Click Installed Templates under Templates in the pane on the left.
4. The middle pane displays thumbnails for each of the installed templates.
A preview of the selected thumbnail appears in a preview pane on the right.
5. You can select an installed template to generate a new workbook.
6. Select the desired template from the middle pane and click Create.
7. Excel closes the dialog box and opens the selected template.
8. Customize the template as needed & save the file with a new name.

Download a Template
Follow these steps to download a template from Microsoft Office Online:
1. Click the Option Button/File and then click New.
2. Click the category of the template you want to download under Microsoft Office Online in
the Navigation pane on the left.
3. The middle pane displays thumbnails for each of the items in that category. In some cases,
you may need to select a subcategory in the middle pane before you see the thumbnails. A
preview of the selected thumbnail appears in a preview pane on the right.
4. Select the thumbnail image for the template you want to download and then click the
Download button which appears on the bottom-right corner of the dialog box.
5. If you see the Microsoft Office Genuine Advantage dialog box, click the Continue button.
6. This step verifies that you have a genuine copy of Microsoft Office. After Excel 2007/2010
finishes downloading the template, the template file opens automatically.
7. Customize the template as needed. Save the file with a new name.
8. After downloading a template from Microsoft Office Online, you can use the template to
generate new workbooks by opening it from the My Templates tab of the New dialog box
(open this dialog box by clicking the My Templates link in the Navigation pane of the New
Workbook dialog box).
