MS-6115 ~ SHOSTAKOVICH: SYMPHONY NO. 5, OP. 47

LEONARD BERNSTEIN conducting the NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Bernstein interprets this music with great plasticity, clarity and fire, stressing the warmth and the

spontenaity hidden in it. – The Evening Leningrad.

The orchestra moved along, submitting to the artistic will of the conductor...

Nit a single detail of the score escaped Bernstein´s attention and at the same time the breadth of

the performance was so great as to be rarely heard in performances of this symphony.‖ – Literary

Gazette

This legendary record has enjoyed a singular reputation for interpretation and performance, This

new 180g vinyl pressing will finally reveal the full capacity of its sound. Recorded soon after their

triumphant tour of Europe, Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic feed off the

ecstatic energy of those concerts to create one of the definitive classical LP´s of all time;

dynamic, passionate and brimming with lyricism and power. During the European tour,

Shostakovich himself applauded Bernstein´s dazzling interpretation. The fact that this

performance is still revered 30 years and countless other recording later is testament to its

brilliance.

CLP-8672-1 ~ CALIFORNIA DREAMING

WES MONTGOMERY

Although there is evidence that Wes Montgomery participated on sime Lionel Hampton records in

the late 40s, his recognized recording output started in the late 50s as member of the

Montgomery Brothers for Pacific Jazz. Jazz critics consider his most ―important‖ recordings to be

the ones he made for Riverside between 1959 and 1963. However, music lovers best remember

his two extremely productive years for Verve. At Verve, Wes produced nine LPs ! Among the

most memorable tiles are Bumpin, Smoking At the Half-NJote, Going Out of My Head and finally

California Dreaming.

Like most of Montgomery´s Verve LPS, California Dreaming features the tight arrangements of

Don Sebesky. Sebesky used a large group of nineteen players to produce an immense sound.

Unlike the dreamy, string accented Bumpin, California Dreaming is a brassy, bouncy affair, with

emphasis on bounce ― The album features many fine soloists, including Herbie Hancock on

piano, Bucky Pizzarelli on acoustic guitar, Ray Baretto on congas, and the steady bnackbeat of

Grady Tate on drums.

In the 60s jazz purists discounted jazz musicians who embraced pop music, but these records

connected with a large audience, making this the most popular stage of Wes´ career.

Time to enjoy California Dreaming !

CLP-7050 ~ TAKIN OFF

HERBIE HANCOCK

At 21, Herbie Hancock was already a mature and well-traveled musician. He played Mozart with

the Chicago Symphony at age 11, studied at Grinell College and by age 20 played with Donald

Byrd. Takin Off, his Blue Note debut, is a sophisticated showcase for Hancock´s ability as a

group leader. Not as intellectually challenging or technically complex as his later recordings, the

pianist nevertheless displays a restless imagination and technical verve. When he is not striking

off on funky, swinging solos, the backing chords are restrained and unassuming. He is controlling

the session and confident enough to let his soloists (Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Dexter

Gordon on tenor sax – both in fine, relaxed form) take the spotlight. From the now-legendary hit

―Watermelon Man‖ to the reflective, noir-ish ―Alone and I‖, this is a great first album that

foreshadows the greatness that would follow on this blue Note masterworks, Empyrean Isles and

Maiden Voyage.

S&P-507 ~ THE ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS OF ROY ORBISON

ROY ORBISON

S&P Records is proud to present The All-Time Greatest Hits of Roy Orbison a 2-LP set on 180-

gram vinyl by the legendary Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame inductee.

This beautifully made, gatefold-jacketed set includes 20 of Roy Orbison’s best material, including

―Pretty Woman‖, ―Cryin’‖, ―Pretty Paper‖, ―Love Hurts‖, ―In Dreams‖ and ―Only the Lonely‖. This is

truly your one-stop for the best of Roy Orbison.

The record was meticulously mastered by Steve Hoffman on his all-tube system from the original

analog master tapes. Great care was taken to recreate or improve every track for your listening

pleasure. The masterful production by the great Bill Porter (who writes the liner notes) is

presented with better clarity and definition than ever before.

Pressed in limited numbers and individually numbered, The All-Time Greatest Hits of Roy

Orbison is sure to be one of the great collector’s items of the year.

S&P508-1 ~ JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS

NAT KING COLE

Originally released in 1957, Just One of Those Things has become a stand out title in Nat King

Cole's amazing library because the theme is comparable to Frank Sinatra's classic Come Fly

With Me and employs the same arranger/conductor, Billy May. Along with the 12 songs contained

on the original 1957 release from Capitol Records (including "A Cottage For Sale", "Who's Sorry

Now", "These Foolish Things", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "The Song Ended", "The

Party's Over" and the title track) are 3 BONUS TRACKS ("Day In-Day Out", "I'm Gonna Sit Right

Down [and Write Myself a Letter]", "Something Makes Me Want to Dance With You") from Nat's

1961, Billy May helmed, Capitol Release Face the Music.

Steve Hoffman mixed and mastered Just One of Those Things from the original three-track

session masters at Capitol Records Studio B. The lacquers were cut at AcousTech Mastering.

The 180-gram vinyl was pressed at RTI.

Continuing with a string of critically acclaimed S&P Records audiophile LP titles from Eva

Cassidy and Roy Orbison (all available from Pro-Ject), Just One of Those Things will give fans

and listeners a great new way to enjoy a classic title.

MUS-003-1 ~ LIVE ON THE BBC

DEEP PURPLE

The legendary British rock band DEEP PURPLE made their mark on music history in the late

1960's and early 1970's. Known as a great live band, one of their best performances was

recorded by the BBC in front of a live audience in 1972 and has become legendary.

First released commercially in 1980, this BBC performance includes virtually all of the (as yet-

unreleased) Machine Head album. With amazing sound recording and performances, this

DOUBLE-LP set features "HIGHWAY STAR", "SPACE TRUCKIN" and the soon-to-be-famous

"SMOKE ON THE WATER" in blistering live versions.

Our two-disc set includes over 80 minutes of music and ends with the studio version of their

biggest hit "HUSH" in full stereo. Mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray from the original

stereo master mixes, the power of DEEP PURPLE will be revealed in this fabulous LP release.

MUS-002-1 ~ THE COLLECTION

THE SEARCHERS

We presents the first LP collection featuring the cream of this legendary British Invasion band,

including smash hits "LOVE POTION NUMBER NINE", "NEEDLES AND PINS", "WHEN YOU

WALK INTO THE ROOM", "SUGAR AND SPICE", and many more.

The songs on this LP were mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray from the 15 ips Pye

Studios original stereo mixes. A 1964 vintage vacuum tube Ampex MX-35 line mixer was

restored especially for this project and was used exclusively in the LP mastering process.

Undoubtedly, this is the best these recordings have ever sounded. This is a must for music

lovers; one of the most underrated bands of the original British invasion, THE SEARCHERS will

live again through this recording.

MUS-001-1 ~ STORYTELLER

DONOVAN

DONOVAN has been one of the most beloved artists of the rock era. This special, 2-disc

collection brings together for the first time many of his biggest hits on Hickory and Epic records.

STORYTELLER features the mega-hits "CATCH THE WIND", "COLOURS", "UNIVERSAL

SOLDIER", "SUNSHINE SUPERMAN", "MELLOW YELLOW", "HURDY GURDY MAN", and

more, all in the ORIGINAL hit versions - plus a few surprises.

Mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray from the original mono and stereo master mixes, this

collection shows off the great fidelity of the original recordings. The second disc was mastered at

45 RPM and features Donovan's four biggest Epic recordings, revealed in their full sonic glory.

All songs on this LP set are full-length versions; as a special bonus, "Colours" is featured in both

its album and 45-hit versions. This album will be a must for those who love Donovan and the

music of the 1960's.

LSP-4266-1 ~ AMERICAN WOMAN

THE GUESS WHO

Despite a previous Top 40 hit "These Eyes" from Wheatfield Soul, success was evasive south of

the Canadian border of the Guess Who. American Woman ignited U.S. interest in the then 7-year

old rock band from Winnipeg. The certified Gold Record contains three Top 40 singles ("No

Time", "No Sugar Tonight" and the ubiquitous title track). It successfully brigded the gap between

60´s pop-rock and 70´s stadium rock.

The Guess Who´s next album Share the Land contained the hit title track, a rallying cry against

corporate greed and warmongering, though in a less affronting manner than "American Woman".

The band officially broke up in 1975, but continues in various guises today.

SIDE 1:

1.) American Woman

2.) No Time

3.) Talisman

4.) No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature

SIDE 2:

1.) 969

2.) When Friends Fall Out

3.) 8:15

4.) Proper Stranger

5.) Humpty´s Blues/American Woman (Epilogue)

LSC-2125-1 ~ GRIEG: MUSIC FROM PEER GYNT

BOSTON POPS ORCHESTRA; Eileen Farrell, Soprano

The strings of the Boston Symphony have never sounded better than they did during the

recordings sessions from the Spring of 1957. Under the direction of Charles Munch and Arthur

Fiedler, some of the finest string playing in the history of the stereophonic LP was recorded !

Prime examples of these stellar sessions include Tchaikovsky´s Serenade For strings, Barber´s

Adagio For Strings and Fiedler´s magnificent performance of Grieg´s Peer Gynt Suites 1 & 2.

This recording features noted soprano Eileen Farrell. Fiedler coupled Peer Gynt with Grieg´s

luscious Lyric Suite, another tour de force for those incredible Boston strings ! Since this record

was made with pop-classical maestro Arthur Fiedler, the orchestra appears as their alternate

guise of The Boston Pops.

Steeped with strong competition, Fiedler´s Peer Gynt stands at the top of all the recordings. This

performance has drive, energy, precision and above all, the soul that is missing from any of

todays sterile readings. This new 180-gram issue has all the fullness and weight audiophiles

have come to expect from RCA´s BSO recordings. There are some very good reasons why many

of the Living Stereo Boston records are now highly prized collectors items. If you have invested

your time and money into a state-of-the-art analog playback system, you deserve this stunning

example of LP technology.

several musical styles are recognized: R&B, Soul, Jazz, Brazilian sonorities and Cuban rhythms

... interpreted in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
