Legal system of the People's Republic of China
This course offers an introduction to the law of the People's Republic of China and discusses some of the central issues of China's ongoing legal reform. It is designed mainly to prepare students for further studies in specialized Chinese commercial law subjects. The course provides an overview of the basic concepts and categories of Chinese law, including the cultural and political traditions informing the current legal system and the background to legal reforms since 1979. The course further examines the PRC constitutional framework and political-legal institutions and practices, including the legal profession and the features and uses of both formal and informal procedures, such as civil, criminal and administrative litigation and mediation. All reading materials are in English. Knowledge of Chinese is not required.
