CANADIAN ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE 2008
Media Release January 3, 2008
Calgary - Top caliber long distance competitors from across Canada and the United
States are preparing their mounts for the Rocky Mountain Challenge – 2008
Canadian Nationals to be held in Alberta, Canada; July 31 – August 4, 2008.
Showcasing the equestrian sports of competitive trail riding, endurance and ride n’
tie, the event is expected to attract over 200 competitors and their horses. The
Canadian Nationals are hosted every two years. Alberta is keenly looking forward to
defending their competitive trail team silver medals from the 2006 Nationals that
were hosted in Quebec and hope to oust Ontario from the top spot and bring home
the gold.
Sandra Nielsen, the 2006 Alberta team Chef d’ Equipe, spearheads the 2008 Rocky
Mountain Challenge, a non-profit organization formed to host this event. An
enthusiastic rider and organizer of local competitive trail rides, Nielsen is excited
about hosting these eight prestigious events over a five-day period with courses
varying from 25 – 100 miles.
“The RMC is very excited to be hosting AHA, AERC and FEI sanctioned events as
well.” Explains Nielsen. “The 100 mile FEI event in particular, will offer international
competitors an opportunity to qualify for the World’s in 2010 which will bring in some
of the top names in CTR, Endurance and Ride & Tie. Yet the event will still offer
amateur riders to try their luck and experience the prestige of such a high caliber
event.”
The AHA (Arabian Horse Association) is a cross-entry available to sweepstakes
horses, the AERC (American Endurance Ride Conference) is the American Endurance
sanctioning body and the FEI (Federation Equestrian Internationale) is the international
governing body for all Olympic equestrian disciplines including endurance.
The Rocky Mountain Challenge organizing committee is anticipating that the format
will encourage families and friends to fill the stalls of their horse trailers and truly
take advantage of all the offerings.
The Rocky Mountain Challenge will be held at Red Deer River Ranches located South-
West of Sundre, Alberta, July 31- August 4, 2008. This active cattle ranch
established in 1890 boasts towering spruce, aspen and pine trees in the picturesque
foothills between Brown and Williams creek. A destination resort, Red Deer River
Ranches offers true Canadian wildlife viewing on it and its neighboring 50,000 acres
not to mention the incredible terrain challenge that the trail committee will be
putting together.
This National level equestrian competition will feature eight events in three long-
distance equestrian disciplines including; competitive trail, endurance and ride n’ tie.
The event is expected to see over 200 riders participating from across North America
with riders from other countries already making inquiries.

2008 Canadian Nationals in Competitive Trail, Endurance and Ride N’ Tie

Chairman: Sandra Nielsen 403-637-0245
INTERNATIONAL - Malaysia
Important Reminder:
825.5
Additional Qualification Criteria applicable only to Malaysia 2008.
To be qualified to participate in WEC Malaysia 2008 a rider/horse as a
combination has to have successfully completed an additional FEI CEI
3* (or above) ride, the combination, in doing so, meeting the
parameters and conditions as defined below. This additional
qualification must be achieved within 12 months prior to the closing
date of nominated entry.
The rider/horse must:
1. Successfully complete such additional ride equal to, or greater
than, the published Championship or CEI 4* distance (5kms
tolerance allowed).
2. Successfully complete such additional ride in a ride time equal to,
or less than, 13 hours 20 mins. per 160 kms distance.
3. Successfully complete the ride in the same time frame as the
published Championship or CEI 4*.
Time Frame:
One Day: A ride which has no single hold time in excess of 120
minutes and has a total of all hold times not exceeding 300
minutes.
Multiple Day: A ride which has one or more single hold times in
excess of 480 minutes.
825.6
1. Any horse qualified as per the articles 825.3, 825.4 and 825.5
above that within 6 months of the closing date for nominated
entries is eliminated from any FEI or National competition for
Metabolic reasons, requiring immediate invasive treatment
(while still under competition veterinarian control), will forfeit
such qualification.
2. Any Rider qualified as per the articles above who, within 12
months of the closing date for nominated entries, is eliminated
from any two consecutive events (FEI or National) for Metabolic
reasons will forfeit such qualification.
REPORTING OF METABOLIC ELIMINATIONS
The FEI has requested new reporting procedures of all National
Federations and Ride Organizers. This entails reporting metabolic
eliminations for all events, both CEI and CEN. Note that riders (and
horses) Certificate of Capability (CoC) will be withdrawn if:
1) a metabolic elimination which requires invasive treatment occurs
within 6 months of the Nominated Entries Date for the 2008 WEC.
2) two consecutive metabolic eliminations occur within the same 6
month period.
This loss of CoC will likely effect the decision by riders, trainers,
and owners with respect to the application of invasive treatment
following an endurance event. It is assumed that intravenous
re-hydration following a metabolic elimination will cause the
withdrawal of the CoC.
EQUINE CANADA’S ‘PROGRESSIVE COMPETITION AND SPORT LICENSE SYSTEM
Over the next few months you will undoubtedly hear about Equine Canada’s new ‘Progressive
Competition and Sport License System’, designed to more closely match Sport Canada’s Long
Term Athlete Development model, by creating a more graduated system of competition from
‘grassroots to podium’. The Federal and Provincial governments are VERY committed to this,
and the horse sports are currently lagging behind in compliance.
The new system does provide more latitude for disciplines to write their own rules that apply to
their particular sport, specifying which level of sport license will be offered at each level of
competition.
PLEASE NOTE: until Endurance Canada begins to sanction Endurance rides in Canada
(anticipated in 2009), these fees will NOT apply to Endurance riders in local, Provincial
competitions. The majority of rides across the country will continue to be AERC-
sanctioned in 2008.
The new Sport License fees will be as follows (‘user pay’ philosophy): Bronze - $20; Silver - $60;
Gold $100; Platinum $150. The latter is for FEI competitors, which WILL be required by
Endurance riders participating in those events in 2008 (FEI horse and rider registration and a
FEI passport will still be mandatory as well). We anticipate that our competitions, when we are in
the ‘system’, will be at the Discovery level (local) – NO Sport License required – or in the Bronze
category (regional), except for Provincial or National events.
Also, if you do not have a Sport License, you can subscribe to HorseLife, the official bi-monthly
magazine of Equine Canada, for $12.00 per year: Caroline Foster, publisher of HorseLife, is
Endurance Canada’s Media representative, and our discipline is now receiving considerable
coverage in each issue. You can get your subscription on-line or send your cheque to Equine
Canada: 2685 Queensview Drive, Suite 100, Ottawa, ON K2B 8K2
