Text: Hosea 13:14
Part One: Death Enters the World
I. In Genesis at the fall of man sin entered the world (Genesis 2:17).
II. Death is a result of sin (Romans 3:23).
III. God determined death should die!
A. A plan was forged.
B. A prophecy was given.
IV. Hosea 13:14.
A. The hunt was on!
B. Death was put on notice… God is hunting you down!
Part Two: Hunting Down Death
I. People did not die when Jesus was present… death feared coming near Him.
II. Sure, in fear death tried to take Him as an infant, but then it avoided Him and His
resurrection power.
III. At Nain Jesus confronted and took back from death~ Luke 7:11-17
A. The day after that… After He healed the Centurions servant near to death.
B. The village of Nain, 7 miles S.E. of Nazareth
C. Intersection to Samaria.
D. Nain in Hebrew means “pleasant.”
E. The mourning at pleasant.
F. The dead man being carried out.
1. Carried on a (sorou) a plank used as a stretcher.
2. Children up to 30 days old were carried out held by the mom w/ only 2 others.
3. Children from 30 days to 3 years were carried in a casket.
4. Children over 3 years were carried on the stretcher as an open casket.
5. Tells us this “young man” was over three.
G. Only son of a widow.
1. Double mark against her.
2. In a society which had little to offer for their care.
3. The large crowd shows the sympathy of the community.
4. The compassion of Jesus.
H. Touched the open coffin.
1. The honor of pall bier.
2. Touching the open coffin and being defiled.
I. The words to the young man.
J. A widow received her son… death received a warning of what was to come.
IV. At Bethany Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead after four days in the grave.
A. We see Jesus weeping and death shuttering.
B. We see Jesus commanding and the grave relinquishing.
C. Jesus rehearsing… O Death, I will be your plagues! O Grave, I will be your
destruction!
V. The ultimate confrontation…At the cross!
A. Jesus “gave up” His life. IT wasn’t taken from Him.
B. The hunting trap… by dying He set up the destruction of death.
VI. The Sunday morning…
A. Quiet on earth as Jesus prepares.
1. He has taken our sins and dropped them in hell so they couldn’t take us there.
2. He is ready to ascend to Father… but first…
3. The sun is preparing to rise.
4. And the SON is preparing to rise!
5. He whispers under His breath… O Grave I will be your destruction… Pity is
hidden from My eyes…
6. The earth quakes…
7. The stone rolls…
8. The Son rises
B. And the hunt is over… death is defeated!
Part Three: Your Victory over death!
I. 1 Corinthians 15:54-58
II. The power is taken away from death and the grave so you would be empowered to be
steadfast, immovable and abounding!
III. Now we can stare down death and declare- you can’t win… In the power of Jesus WE
WILL RISE AGAIN!

2. What do you think the people thought at Nain after Jesus raised the boy?
