Gilgamesh Theater

1. You will be put into groups of three or four, depending on class size. Each group will be

assigned one of the tablets from The Epic of Gilgamesh.

2. Groups will read the tablet and develop a play to act out their particular tablet. Groups must

use some lines directly from the text, as well as paraphrasing lines to make the action move

along.

3. Groups will also analyze their particular tablet and identify the following elements:

 Give a brief summary of your tablet (book)

 How does your tablet exemplify the “hero’s quest”? What elements of an

epic journey or quest are evident in your tablet?

 Identify at least two epic similes

 Identify any epithets used

4. Performances will be 3-5 minutes in length and will begin with a reading of the groups'

analysis of the tablet.

5. In addition to the performance, groups will submit their script and written analysis (see #3).



Note: You may be as creative as you like. Feel free to include props and costumes as the space of

our classroom allows.
