Millwood High Guidance
An Introduction to Career Cruising
Career Cruising?
• A web-based program to help you make decisions
about your future occupation (“career”) and the
training or education that you will need.
• Career Cruising may be assigned in class by your
teacher. If not, or in addition, you can access it
through your guidance counsellor.
• It will be enjoyable! You’ll see. Later, you can
access CC again from any web-linked computer to
review your answers and look up occupations.
What about if you already have a
career goal??
Career Cruising is just as valuable to you
as it is to those with no goal!
It can confirm that your choice is reasonable,
or it might suggest you should reconsider,
Or it might just show you some other paths that
You had never thought of before….
NOW, LET’S HAVE A
LOOK AT
This presentation is detailed
but is just meant to give you a feel
For what happens in Career Cruising!
Career Matchmaker
• This is the part of Career Cruising that everyone
will do.
• At first you answer questions based on your
interests. The program will suggest occupations
that seem to suit your interests.
• Then you answer more questions where you
estimate your skills. The program then gives
ratings to the occupations you already had listed,
based on your skills estimation.
• You can print out any of your lists.

Career Matchmaker
Here are the possible answers to the
questions you will be asked.
Be true to yourself when you answer!
For example, don’t say you like to work
with kids if you don’t! The quality of
your results is based on the accuracy of
your answers….
When you
have
answered the
questions,
You get a list,
based on

answers
There may not be much difference in suitability Among
occupations close on the list. For example, Geologist may be
quite close to Oceanographer. Also, you may see personal
factors that could eliminate occupations on your list
+ 27 more
(philosophical or practical)
SAVE YOUR WORK!!!
At any time when you are in your Career
Cruising session
you may create a personal portfolio and
save
information to it. That way, you will not
have to
answer the questions again if the computer
were to crash,or if you want to go back and
access the program and results again (even
years later!)
This portfolio is password protected. Only
you and your advisor may access it!
Now Analyze your Skills
Here is a typical skills question. Try to be as accurate as possible.
Some people are too modest… some over-estimate their skills.

OTHER ASPECTS
OF CAREER CRUISING
Career Cruising
• If you want you can find out what education or
training you will need for an occupation on your
list, and where the program is available.
• Information about the institution and the specific
program is also available.
• This section may or may not be part of your
assignment or session with your counsellor. He or
she may prefer to use personal knowledge or other
resources to help you with this. You will be able
in any case to access all of the program
components from home.
Career Cruising
• Career Cruising also has another major
section that helps you build and produce
your resume. You are most likely to access
this section from home.
Career Cruising
When to do it?
• Career Cruising might be assigned to you in class.
Or you can make an appointment in Guidance.
• If you cruise careers in Grade 10 you should try it
again in Grade 12 or both 11 and 12. Your
previous results are always there to work from.
• If you are interested in going Career Cruising, you
should count on using most or all of a class period
or an hour at home. If doing this with the
counsellor, please choose the class that you can
most afford to miss.
Career Cruising
• This is the end of the presentation.
• You might now be given an assignment, and you
will be trying out the program. Even if this is the
only reason you have to do it, keep an open
mind… you might learn a lot about yourself…
• If you are not receiving an assignment, then you
are welcome to make an appointment in Guidance
and go Career Cruising.
