Career Center HOSA Winners Advance to State Competition
JACKSON, Mich. – A record 26 Jackson Area Career Center health science students have
qualified for the state Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) competition on April 9
in Traverse City based on their top-three performances at regionals.

There were 45 Career Center students among the 563 students from eight southeastern Michigan
counties who competed at regionals on March 4 at Washtenaw Community College.

“Many of the students chose new events to compete in,” said Holly Metheringham, Career
Center Health Sciences instructor and HOSA advisor. “They worked independently to read
books and do research that obviously turned out very well.”

From the Career Center’s dental program, Leia Glaspie, Jackson High, Rachel Leece,
Napoleon, and Whitney Webb, Hanover-Horton, won gold medals, and Courtney DeGroote,
Northwest, Brooke Lawe, Western, Kaitelynn Rider, Columbia Central, and Kaitlynn Scott,
Columbia Central, won silver medals.

Healthcare Technician I students bringing home gold medals were Harley Coppernoll,
Hanover-Horton, Iesha Cox, Jackson High, Shantell Edwards, Jackson High, and Charlie
Shepard, Columbia Central. Silver medal winners were Kayla Kinch, Sierra Melling, Amanda
Reynolds, and Ashley Washington, all from Hanover-Horton, and Stephanie Smith, from
Western. Lisa Coleman, a home-schooled student, won a bronze medal.

Five Healthcare Technician II students won gold medals: Jenna Abbott, Western, Ashley
LaClear, Grass Lake, Alicia O’Rourke, Vandercook, Madison Betts, Columbia Central, and
Cabria Cousins, Napoleon. Silver medal winners were Alexia Brooks, Northwest, Myria
Davis-Green, Hanover-Horton, and Amberly Luppo, Western, while Brandi Wint, Northwest,
brought home a bronze medal.

The mission of HOSA is to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality health care by
providing opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development to all health science
students, therefore, helping students to meet the needs of the health care community.

Students who get involved in career and technical students groups like HOSA have opportunities
to hone their leadership skills, apply for scholarships, and gain valuable recognition on college
transcripts.
