Connotation
Connotation is the feeling a word creates in the reader or it can be the words
suggested meaning.
Example: the word idea has a neutral connotation but it can have a positive
plot.
connotation if it is changed to concept or a negative connotation if it becomes plot
Materials Paper, markers, scissors
Procedure Select a vocabulary word (example: smell, thin, talk)
Draw a triangle
On the top of the triangle write the vocabulary word
Inside the triangle draw a picture that illustrates the word, and
write a sentence using the neutral connotation of the word
On the lower left corner write the positive connotation
On the lower right corner write the negative connotation.
Color the picture
Cut out the triangle
Sentence: I have an idea about what to do during recess.
Work in small groups:
Fold back the lower corners on your triangle so only the word on the top is visible
Exchange your triangle with a group member
Try to find a positive and negative connotation for their word
Unfold the corner and check your answers
