playwright.
He has been considered one of the
greatest playwrights of all time.
THE HENRIADS
THE HISTORY TETRALOGY
Tetralogy
A series of four (4) related plays are
called a tetralogy.
The history plays Richard II, Henry IV
Pts. 1 and 2 and Henry V are
collectively called the Henriad.
These plays were concerned with
English nationhood, identity, destiny
and imperial ambitions.
RICHARD II
Richard II is an extravagant,
indecisive king.
He banishes his cousin Bolingbroke
from England and takes his uncle’s
wealth upon his death.
His cousin returns to claim what is
rightfully his.
Bolingbroke usurps the throne and
becomes king. Inadvertently he
commits regicide as king Richard II is
murdered.
