 Runners Knee

 Most common injured joint



 2 joints- patellafemoral joint and tibiofemoral

joint

SPECIAL QUESTIONS

Sound at time of injury- POP or SNAP

RUNNERS KNEE

 Patella femoral pain



 Occurs when patella fails to move smoothly

and centrally through femoral groove



 Often due to muscle imbalance

SIGNS

 Ache in knee cap with sudden stabbing pain



 Aggravated by stairs, running



 Eased with rest



 More common with people whose jobs

involve sitting

 ICE

 NSAIDS

 REST

 REDUCE AGGRAVATING FACTORS

 SWIMMING

 PHYSIOTHERAPY- Stretching and

Strengthening Quads, stretching

hamstrings/calfs

ILIOTIBIAL BAND SYNDROME

 Lateral knee pain



 Worse going downhill or down stairs



 Starts with twinge and gets worse

 SWIM/ CYCLE



 PHYSIOTHERAPIST- to stretch ITB, soft tissue

work to help stretch fibers, strengthening VMO,

Often notice leg length difference



 ORTHOTICS- Trainers

SHIN SPLINTS



 Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome



 Pain inside of shin during exercise and at

rest

TREATMENT

 PRICE

 Change running shoes

 Often excessive pronation ( flat feet)

Require arch supporting inner soles

 Pool running

 Avoid downhill running

 Physiotherapy- Deep tissue massage, calf

and shin stretches

PLANTARFASCITIS

 Inflammation of the fascia that runs along

the length of the sole of the foot



 Pain- heel, inside of sole of the foot



 Pain- with activity



 Worse AM

 Ice- Frozen Water bottle, roll along bottom of foot



 NSAIDS



 Physiotherapy- stretching the fascia, along with

gastrocnemius and soleus



 Taping

ACHILLES TENDINOPATHY

 Pain achilles tendon (specific)



 AM stiffness



 Stiff with inactivity



 Occurs most commonly when runners have

quickly increased distance

TREATMENT

 3-4 days rest



 Ibuprofen as least damage with the tendon

repair



 Physiotherapy- Eccentric strengthening

Pain free when performing loading exercises
