                      Dear Friends of the Chamber,
The month started with our Business After Hours at the Dairy Snack. They have extended their
season and are now offering delivery, catering and additional items. Call Chris at the Dairy
                      Snack for details.
Friday night of the Labor Day weekend was spent helping the Red Cross of Wyandot County with the Driver Alert
Service at the Carey rest area off highway 23. The Red Cross provides free coffee, drinks and snacks to travelers
during the long weekend. We met some interesting folks traveling through Wyandot County that night. Hope they
were all safe in their travels. Well done Jennifer Garza, Wyandot Co. Director
The Visitor Bureau is gearing up for their 20th anniversary event in 2012. Sara Lou Brown and her board are planning
programs and events that is sure to be enjoyed by young and the feeling young folks. Be sure to watch for details.
One project we are looking into is a photo, recipe and story contest to put together a collection on Wyandot County.
If you or someone you know would have interest in this program please contact the Chamber as I will compile a list of
names for the mailing.
I completed my day of service which was purchased by Farmer’s Mutual on September 8. Read the article in this
newsletter. It was a great opportunity to meet and enjoy the day with one of our members.
Fair week was great! A lot of painting, fixing and mopping went into this year’s booth and it was all worth it based on
the nice compliments we received. The Carey Chamber and the Visitor’s Bureau were great partners. Thank you to
everyone who helped out with the booth and Night at the Races. Special thank you goes to Loose Furniture for the
use of the flat screen TV, Gottfried Electric for rewiring the booth and installing the track lighting and Rex Grasz for
making the stands and installing our display.
Many helped out at the booth but we need to thank Janice Woods of Woods Antiques for working each morning shift
and to Heritage IGA for covering most of Thursday with a great team from your store. You will find more about the fair
in the following pages.
Thursday, December 1 will also be the Chamber of Commerce Annual Wreath and Tree Auction. This year it will be
held at Shotzy’s, begins at 6:30 p.m. but plan to come early for dinner and drinks. All proceeds from the auction
sponsor community events such as the 4th of July Fireworks. We are offering any holiday decorated object sponsored
by a local business, many include gift certificates, coupons or items. This year’s Koehler Drug Store “Ohio State”
wreath is on display already at Koehler Drug and Clear Channel has donated a trip to Las Vegas for this year’s auction.
It is on display at the Chamber of Commerce and is absolutely beautiful.
Home for the Holidays is in full gear. You have begun to see information cross your desk. Please order early so we can
offer the best presentation and keep the last minute errors to a minimum. We are happy to invoice as a convenience
to you. We are hoping to display new flags on the light poles for the Holiday season. As soon as we have 20
commitments these can be ordered and time is pressing, if you would like to have your name displayed on a flag,
become a sponsor. The flags are made of durable sunbrella material and will be used for multiple seasons to come.
Call the Chamber to order yours today.
Back to page 1? Click here

The Autumn Cruise came to town on a beautiful day September 24th. It has been stated by those who attend car
shows throughout the region that Upper Sandusky puts on one of the best run and organized car shows around.
Way to go to Irv Woods and the Wyandot Classic and Cruisers Car Club.
September 27th we celebrated with Earl and Dawn Kidwell their new ownership of the Party Pak. We wish them
the best and are happy they are here.
First Citizens National Bank sponsored a seminar “Take the Stairs” that discussed how to stop procrastinating and
start getting it done. It was a very nice lunch and program, thank you to 1 st Citizens for this opportunity. I
encourage anyone to attend the next seminar.
Work has begun on the redesign of our website. The Chamber is working with Dan Price and his team at A-1
Printing for a fresh interactive web presence. Our goal is to have the unveiling by the first quarter of 2012.
We ended the month by enjoying Love, Sex and the IRS play at the Star Theater. The show was funny and
entertaining as the title implies, great job by the Star Theater. We are fortunate to have live theater in Upper
Sandusky and I encourage everyone to come out to see the programs. Babes in Toyland directed by Jan
Stoneburner is already in rehearsal. Opening night is December 1 st at 7:30 p.m.
Happy October!

My Workday at Farmer’s Mutual
Kathy Tolle

Many of you know that I went on the auction block myself to spend a day completing tasks for a Chamber member
during the Hog Roast Live Auction. Farmer’s Mutual Insurance Agency bought a day of service for a donation of
$500. My service day was September 8th. The day began at 8:00 a.m. with greetings and introductions by Farmer’s
Mutual General Manager, Dan Oakes. Farmers Mutual Relief Association began in Upper Sandusky in 1874 outside
McCuthenville and in 1878 located in Upper Sandusky. They specialize in standard fire, homeowner, farm owner and
agri-business policies. The home office is at 247 Tarhe Trial in Upper Sandusky, Ohio (just one of the 140 agencies
throughout Ohio).

My first project was to grasp the concepts of crop insurance. I learned that the USDA mandates much of the
formula that determines the rates for crop insurance. First, they look at historical field data for expected yields,
establish a Guarantee yield or trigger yield, which determines the yield that is the threshold of when farmers are
paid a percentage of the expected value if yields fall below this trigger point. The farmer’s must also choose the
coverage level or percent yield to be paid if the trigger requirements are met for payment. It was much to
comprehend in an hour but Marlene McCleary has dedicated her career to helping farmer’s get the most of their
crop insurance policies.

Then I spent time with Tana Rowland discussing home, auto and farm insurance. We used my cattle and land rent
situation as our example and looked what goes into an insurance quote. David Ohl shared the claims adjuster’s point
of view; David covers a lot of territory and handles all sorts of claims and situations. The hardest thing to explain
and for policy holders to understand is what is and is not covered by a policy and the value of what can be replaced.

Jennifer Giesey was my next stop and she was very interesting. Jennifer is in charge of the underwriting department
and information technology. She began with Farmer’s Mutual in high school and has made her career there. Her
knowledge and experience shows when communicating with her co-workers. Many depend upon her and she
makes the job look seamless. Having time with Jennifer was interesting and informative.

I sat with Tara Thiel, one of the underwriters and took a look at how values for insurance quotes are created. The
computer program was state-of-the-art and with the years of accumulated experience Farmer’s Mutual gives their
clients very accurate value measurements.

The day flew by and before realizing it, 5:00 p.m. had arrived. I graciously thank all my friends at Farmer’s Mutual
for allowing me an inside glimpse at Farmer’s Mutual and their daily jobs. It was time that I greatly enjoyed.
