SO YOU WANT TO BE AN UNDERWRITER?

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Bermuda Insurance Institute is pleased to host a six session course entitled “So
you want to be an Underwriter?” which will highlight issues that arise when making
an underwriting decision and give you some insight into how these issues can be dealt
with. The focus of this course will be on property cat reinsurance and will seek to
explore some of the softer skills that are necessary to make good and reasoned
underwriting decisions.

OUTLINE OF PROGRAMME:
      • The role of the contract in reinsurance transactions.
      • Integrating cat modeling into the underwriting process.
      • Non-modeled perils – how and when are these important, how do we estimate their value?
      • Capital requirements.
      • An introduction to basic pricing techniques. Building the price from:
          o Cat model results
          o Non-modeled perils
          o Capital requirements
          o Other
      • The softer side of underwriting - negotiation, portfolio management, planning and strategy.
TARGET AUDIENCE

This 5 session course is open only to those currently in the (re)insurance industry with a strict maximum
of 3 participants per organization. Preference will be given to BII member company employees and
those who are already in underwriting departments or cat modeling departments not currently
underwriting. Although not an essential pre-requisite, it would be beneficial to have knowledge of cat
modeling techniques and the methodology within them. This course would also be suitable to partially
qualified actuaries. There will be some work set in between classes.
A certificate of attendance will be issued that may be used to obtain 10 hours of Continuing
Professional Development credits if applicable to your specific qualifying body.
