Application Packet



We will be hiring 25 students – 10 Summer Resident Assistants (RA) and 15 Summer Conference

Assistants (CA). Job descriptions are attached. Four of the Conference Assistants will be hired to work

until August 20 to assist with early arrival check in and check out. On the application form, you can

apply for any of these positions. The summer housing/conference program runs from May 23 through

August 13.



The summer housing program in the apartment communities accommodates continuing on-campus

residents, summer school residents, Orientation Assistants, and special student groups. The staff will

consist of the Hillside and Susquehanna Community Directors (CD) and 10 Summer Resident

Assistants.



The summer conference program works with outside groups (academic conferences, athletic camps,

parent orientation, etc.) who are housed for a specific length of time in the traditional residence halls.

The staff will consist of the Apartment Community Directors (CDs), two Assistant Conference

Coordinators (ACCs), and the 15 Summer Conference Assistants.



Please read the job descriptions carefully.



When evaluating candidates for these positions, we will consider the information given on the

application and/or resume and the letter of application. We will also consult references. In addition, we

will give priority to those applicants who are taking only Term I (not Term II) courses.



Regarding references, please note the following:

• Current RAs - no further references will be needed. Your current RD/CD will be consulted.

• New RAs - no further references will be needed. Your RA application file will be reviewed.

• Other Applicants - please provide the name and telephone number of two references with your

application. Residential Life staff members and/or employers are especially helpful.

POSITION DESCRIPTION





QUALIFICATIONS



Summer Resident Assistants must be current Binghamton University students or May

graduates. Summer RAs do not need to be enrolled in summer school.





EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES



 Be available and in residence from May 23 through August 13.

 Establish effective and ongoing communication with the Community Directors,

area secretaries, and Assistant Director for the Apartments.

 Develop a personal relationship with the summer residents.

 Spend a significant amount of time in the apartment community.

 Be available to assist residents.

 Be a resource for residents in all areas of campus life.

 Enforce university policies and procedures.

 Organize, support, and participate in community activities.

 Actively participate in staff training and staff meetings.

 Complete room condition reports and assist with check-in and check-out

processes.

 Complete other necessary forms and reports, such as housing rosters, incident

reports, and work orders.

 Post notices and maintain bulletin boards.

 Report all maintenance concerns.

 Participate, on a rotating basis, in evening staff office duty.

 Assist with other relevant duties as assigned.

 Follow and uphold all University and Residential Life policies.





FURTHER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT



 Remuneration: Summer RAs receive a free room in a Hillside or Susquehanna

apartment (valued at $1400) and a $1000 stipend as well as basic telephone

service.



 Vacations: Week off July 3-July 9, 2011. Other short vacation periods and/or

occasional weekends off may be authorized by the Community Directors.

SUMMER CONFERENCE ASSISTANT (CA)

POSITION DESCRIPTION

QUALIFICATIONS



Summer Conference Assistants must be current Binghamton University students or May

graduates. Summer CAs do not need to be enrolled in summer school. In fact, priority in

hiring is given to those applicants who are taking only Term I (not Term II) courses. CA’s

are expected to work morning, afternoon, evening, and night shifts. Therefore, CA’s MUST be

available to work either a morning or afternoon shift, as well as the night shifts during the

week. CA’s can not have jobs or classes that run through an entire work day.



This summer the CA’s will be expected to work May 23-June 3 with the Associate

Director for Residential Life, Operations. You will work approximately 20 hours a week

assisting with the salvage work for Newing College.



EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES



 Be available and in residence from May 23 through August 8. Realize that conference

work will occur during some weekends.

 Establish effective and ongoing communication with the Community Directors,

Assistant Conference Coordinators, and the Assistant Director for Conferences.

 Actively participate in staff training and scheduled staff meetings.

 Able to work effectively in a team environment.

 Present a positive appearance and demeanor to conference attendees.

 Participate fully in and complete all conference work as assigned for each individual

conference, to include:

o Be prepared and available to assist conference attendees.

o Be a resource for conference attendees in all areas of campus life.

o Enforce university policies and procedures.

o Complete room condition reports and assist with set-up and break-down

processes for summer conferences.

o Assist with check-in and check-out processes for summer conferences, which

includes using the Summer Conference software.

o Complete other necessary forms and reports, such as housing rosters, incident

reports, and work orders.

o Distribute linen and other amenities for conference groups.

o Post notices and maintain bulletin boards.

o Report all maintenance concerns.

o Fulfill daytime and evening office responsibilities and share overnight duty

coverage for conference groups.

 Assist with other relevant duties as assigned.

 Uphold all University and Residential Life policies and procedures.



FURTHER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT



 Remuneration: Summer CAs receive a free room in a Susquehanna apartment (valued at

$1400) and a $2000 stipend as well as basic telephone service.

 Extended CA’s will make an additional $500 for their extra weeks of service.

 Vacations: Short vacation periods and/or occasional weekends off may be authorized

by the Summer Conference Professional Staff.
