Smart Start
The groups will be given a crash course in how to use a Flip camcorder, and iMovie
software. They are encouraged to experiment with the technology when they get to
that phase of recording. We will watch a tutorial from
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCEIWWa8ORY to help them out.
Mini-Lesson
The students will receive a brief acting lesson about trying to act natural when on
camera. The children are reminded to never turn a back to the camera and speak
towards the microphone. The mini-lesson is brief to allow more time for the children
to film their commercials.
Show the children this brief youtube video

Application The students will be broken down into their groups and the materials will be
(Group Work) dispersed. The students will first record their Public Service Announcements. You will
need assistance from other adults. I suggest asking the Dean, paraprofessionals,
Guidance Counselors, colleagues on preps, and school aides to stay with the groups
of children while they record their commercials.
When the groups have completed filming their Public Service Announcements have
them return to the classroom and upload their videos from the Flip camcorders into
the MacBook computers. The children will now have the opportunity to use iMovie
to edit and add more parts, sights, and sounds to their Public Service Announcement.
Conclusion
Have the students complete the Public Service Announcement Self Assessment
worksheet to bring the class time to a close.
Extensions:
Upload the students’ Public Service Announcements to www.voicethread.com using
your educator account. (Make sure the students’ parents have signed off on the
photos and videos sheet provided by the NYCDOE.
This will allow the world to view the videos and provide comments. The purpose of a
Public Service Announcement is to spread awareness about a situation.
www.voicethread.com is a great avenue to house the videos online.
