Winchester Medical Center
January 2011
The nearly 200 board-certified physicians on the attending staff represent 35 medical specialties, from family
practice, gerontology and rheumatology to neonatal intensive care, heart surgery and retina surgery. Win-
chester Medical Center is a 150-acre campus including a 411 bed, non-profit, regional referred hospital, a
medical office building, retail pharmacy, cancer center, outpatient diagnostic and surgery facilities, imaging
center with MRI and CT scanning, adult and adolescent psychiatric centers, 250-seat conference facility, two
employee child care centers, restaurant, and park and walking trails. Maintaining a breadth of quality ser-
vices at a reasonable cost has been a point of pride for Winchester Medical Center.
Winchester Medical Center is a subsidiary of Valley Health System, a regional nonprofit “family” of healthcare
providers committed to helping area residents manage their health and enjoy a high quality of life. The Valley
Health System network includes six hospitals: Winchester Medical Center, Warren Memorial, Page Memorial,
Shenandoah Memorial, Morgan County War Memorial, and Hampshire Memorial. Other System members are
Surgi-Center of Winchester, Winchester Rehabilitation Center, two Urgent Care Centers, Valley Home Care,
Valley Medical Transport, and Valley Pharmacy.
The six-story Winchester Medical Center opened in 1990 on the west edge of the city. The building was de-
signed for clinical efficiency and patient convenience. With the exception of intensive and special care units,
patient rooms are private, with a full-length sofa for a guest, and visiting hours are open, determined by the
particular needs of each patient. In 2008, WMC opened a new Health and Wellness facility on the north-west
side of campus. WMC also earned MAGNET certification, an honor reflecting the quality of patient care by
WMC’s nursing staff. In 2010, WMC announced a $176 million expansion that will include a five-story tower,
heart and vascular treatment area, and a new clinical laboratory.
