BOARD OF EDUCATION OF HARFORD COUNTY
Decision on 2011-12 Calendar Adjustment
June 27, 2011
Background Information
The Board of Education of Harford County charters annually a calendar committee to
make recommendations on future school schedules. The Board established on April 15, 2002,
the makeup of the committee. Each spring, the committee meets to make recommendations for a
calendar two-years hence.
Discussion
Due to a change in the Presidential Primary Election date, the 2011-12 calendar must be
adjusted to accommodate polling locations in schools throughout the county. As such, the
calendar will need to be amended to include April 3, 2012 with schools and offices closed, rather
than schools closed for professional development. The April 3rd professional development day
must then be rescheduled and tacked on to the end of the school year. Additionally, a potential
inclement weather make-up day needed to be added to the end of the school year. Please see the
attached color-coded calendar grid for clarification.
Superintendent’s Recommendation
The Superintendent recommends that the Board of Education of Harford County approve
amendment to the 2011-12 calendar due to the revised Presidential Primary Election schedule.
