BSBA Degree

A Guide for Business Majors

What is a BSBA Degree?

The Donald L. Harrison College of Business at Southeast

offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

Degree. Students who wish to complete a BSBA degree

must select a major from the following:

• Accounting

• Economics (business or financial economics)

• Finance

Majors for the BSBA Degree continued

• International Business (requires a business minor, foreign language

component, and approved international experience)

• Management (options in Human Resource, Entrepreneurship, or

Management)

• Marketing (options in Integrated Marketing Communications or

Marketing Management or Sales Management)

• Organizational Administration

• Prebusiness (undecided within business) option for freshmen and

sophomores

Prebusiness

• Students who want a business degree but have not

yet decided on a particular major within business

may declare prebusiness.

• For new freshmen, all courses recommended for the

first two years of study are common requirements

for all majors under the BSBA degree.

• Students should change from prebusiness by the end

of the sophomore year, as major courses are taken

during the junior and senior years.

BSBA Course Requirements

• Completion of the University Studies Program

• Completion of core/support courses with a grade of

‘C’ or better in each

• Completion of major course requirements

• Completion of minor requirements, if required or

selected

– international business is the only business major that

requires a minor

What is University Studies?

• University Studies is the name for the general education

requirements at Southeast

• A list of choices per category with detailed course descriptions

is available in the University Studies Handbook at

www.semo.edu/ustudies/handbook



• Lower Level (100-200) Requirements (42 hours)

– UI100 (waived for transfer students who completed 24 transferable

degree hours after high school graduation prior to starting at SE)

– EN100



Students select ONE course from each of the following categories:

– Artistic Expression

– Literary Expression

– Oral Expression (SC105 is required for BSBA degree)

– Written Expression (EN140 is required for BSBA degree)

– Behavioral Systems

– Living Systems

– Logical Systems (MA134 is required for BSBA degree)

– Physical Systems

– Development of a Major Civilization

– Economic Systems (EC215 is required for BSBA degree)

– Political Systems

– Social Systems

• UI400 Business and Ethics (required for BSBA degree)

A grade of ‘C’ or better is required

Major Course Requirements

• Major course requirements range from 21 to

27 hours (with the exception of International

Business which varies depending on the

business minor and foreign language option

selected)

• A list of major courses is available in the

undergraduate bulletin and at

http://www.semo.edu/registrar

Advisor Assignment

• Students must meet with their academic advisor

prior to enrollment each semester.

• All students pursuing the BSBA degree are initially

assigned to the Harrison College of Business (HCB)

Advising Center for advising assistance.

• Students are later assigned to a faculty advisor in

the department of their major after successful

completion of all admission requirements to the

Harrison College of Business.

Admission Requirements to the

Harrison College of Business

• Completion of 60 hours or more

• A minimum 2.25 overall grade point average

• A grade of ‘C’ or better in SC105, EN140, MG252,

BL255, AD101, EC215, EC225, AC221, AC222, MA134,

MA139, and QM257



BSBA students must be admitted to the Harrison

College of Business to be eligible for any

300-500 level business courses

Additional Graduation Requirements



– Minimum of 120 degree hours (business majors typically have

more due to the structure of the program)

– Minimum 2.25 overall grade point average (GPA)

– Minimum 2.25 GPA in major courses

– Minimum 2.0 GPA in Southeast courses

– Minimum 39 hours upper division (300-599) courses

(was 30 hours prior to fall 2008)

– Career Linkages Program (CL001-CL004)

– Writing Proficiency Exam (WP003)

– Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress (MAPP)

(replaced the California Critical Thinking Skills Test in Spring 2010)

Declaring/Changing Majors

• Majors are entered on the academic record based on

the following:

– Application for admission to Southeast or

returning student admission form

– First STEP or Transfer Student Orientation

– Once on campus, students must complete a

Declaration of Major form to change majors

Students may view their current major in

in DegreeWorks (http://www.semo.edu/registrar/degreeworks.htm)

Advising/Enrollment

• Students should contact their assigned advisor to

schedule an advising appointment in early October for

spring advising and in early February for summer/fall

advising.

• Enrollment is based on hours completed (do not count in

progress hours) and opens in early November for spring,

mid February for summer, and early April for fall.

Enrollment dates are at http://www.semo.edu/registrar.

• The schedule of classes is available in Look Up Classes in

the portal 2-3 weeks prior to enrollment.

DegreeWorks

• DegreeWorks is a web-based tool to help students

and advisors monitor progress toward degree

completion. DegreeWorks looks at the degree

requirements of the Undergraduate ate BULLETIN

and the coursework completed to produce an easy-

to-read audit. The audit is divided into block

requirements of how courses, taken or proposed,

count toward degree requirements.
