Course Description:
The course will examine the law governing ocean shipping - by which over 99% of the
world's trade moves. It will cover: admiralty jurisdiction and procedure; carriage of goods;
marine finance; maritime liens; injury to crew, passengers and longshore workers; chartering;
collision; salvage and general average; maritime environmental law; and vessel owner's
limitation of liability. Class will meet on Mondays from 4:10 pm to 7:00 pm, beginning
August 27, 2007 and concluding November 5, 2007. There will be no class October 15,
2007. At the last class, students will receive an open-book, take-home examination, with a
word limit, but no time limit, which they must return within one week.
Students may elect CR/D/F grading. The professor may award participation points.
