The Beleaguered Parents...
Mary H. Schmidt is a principal in the Boston law firm of Schmidt & Federico, PC. Mary’s practice is focused on
trusts and estates and family law. Mary is a former President of and past recipient of the Estate Planner of the
Year award from the Boston Estate Planning Council. She also served as Chairman of the Clients’ Security Board of
the Board of Bar Overseers, Chair of the Trusts and Estates Section of the Boston Bar Association, and as a Trustee
of Social Law Library. Mary is a fellow of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a member of the Pro‐
bate Forum and an Accredited Estate Planner from the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils. She
has been named as a Massachusetts Super Lawyer and was selected by her peers for inclusion in the 2010 edition
of the “Best Lawyers in America” in the specialty of Trusts and Estates. A frequent lecturer and author on topics
relating to trusts and estates, taxation and probate litigation, Mary is currently serving on the Probate
Section Council of the Massachusetts Bar Association.
Michael L. Brown, JD, CPA is the President and CEO of Boston Financial Management, Inc. Boston
Financial is a highly regarded wealth management firm located in Boston at One Winthrop Square.
Mike is a former BEPC Estate Planner of the Year and founder of Brown and Brown CPAs, which was
recently acquired by Marcum LLP.

David E. Appel CLU, ChFC, is a Managing Partner at Goldwasser‐Appel Insurance Advisors, LLC. He is a fifteen‐year
qualifying and life member of the International Million‐Dollar Round Table (MDRT), with 2010 & 2011 Top‐of‐the‐
Table qualifications and eight prior Court‐of‐the‐Table qualifications. He was highlighted in NAIFA’s July 2004 na‐
tional publication, "Advisor Today”, in an article entitled “Four under Forty” portraying four top Advisors and
community leaders in the United States under the age of 40. He was the 2005/2006 President of NAIFA Boston,
and is a fifteen year member of the Boston Estate Planning Council. He is one of a few Licensed Insurance Advisors
in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. David has spoken at life insurance industry meetings throughout the
United States, and he spoke at the 2006 Annual MDRT meeting in San Diego; and the 2010 MDRT Annual meeting
in Vancouver, BC.

Beth Milkovits, CFP is Director of Development at the Boston Foundation, Boston’s Community Foundation. Beth
offers the knowledge and expertise of the Foundation to the Professional Advisor Community to help design custom‐
ized charitable solutions for their clients. Beth also works directly with individuals, families and corporations to
structure complex gifts such as donations of Limited Partnership interests, closely held business shares, and real
property. Beth is a member of the Board of BEPC, a member of the FPA and a volunteer mentor at Year Up.

Michael F. Barry, CLU, ChFC, MSFS is principal and founder of Barry Financial, L.L.C., an estate manage‐
ment firm specializing in wealth transfer and business succession planning. Mike's specialties include plan‐
ning problems faced by family‐owned businesses and transfer of ownership from one generation to the
next. Prior to forming Barry Financial, LLC in 1981, he taught math and science in Massachusetts public
schools. Mike is married with 3 children and lives in Walpole.
Christopher T. Carlson, Esquire is a co‐founding partner of Gilmore, Rees & Carlson, P.C., with offices in
Wellesley and Franklin, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island. Prior to the establishment of this
firm, Mr. Carlson spent 16 years as an attorney in the Trusts and Estates Department of Hale and Dorr
(now Wilmer Hale), becoming a Senior Partner in that firm in 1982. During his entire 38 year practice, Mr.
Carlson has focused on providing estate planning and administration advice to his individual clients, their
families and businesses, to help them achieve their personal and financial objectives. Mr. Carlson has
been listed in the Best Lawyers in America for the past 16 years, and has been named as a Massachusetts
“Super Lawyer” for the past 8 years. A member of the Boston Estate Planning Council since 1972, he
served on the Board of Directors from 1987 to 1991, and currently serves as a member of the Program
Committee and Nominating Committee.
Peter H. Talbot is a Senior Vice President of U.S. Trust. His responsibilities include sales and marketing of
U.S. Trust's investment and trust services. Peter has worked with State Street Corporation since 1970, and
held the position of Principal for State Street Global Advisors, performing many of the same duties, prior
to his joining U.S. Trust. Peter graduated from Stanford University in 1965 and earned his Master of Busi‐
ness Administration degree from the University of California in 1968. He is currently a board member and
treasurer of the North Bennett School in Boston, a member of the Boston Estate Planning Council, and
previously held the position of Chairman of the Advisory Board for Northeastern University's Center for
Family Business.
Carol E. Tully, CPA serves as Wolf's Director of Tax Services of the Firm's Entrepreneurial Driven Busi‐
nesses Group. With over twenty‐nine years of experience, Carol is a certified public accountant and attor‐
ney and earned a master’s degree in taxation from Boston University. In addition to delivering a unique
combination of expertise in the areas of individual, fiduciary, estate, and gift tax planning to families, busi‐
ness owners and executives, Carol advises entrepreneurial‐driven businesses in a variety of industries in‐
cluding professional services and investment advisors. She also provides consultation services on matters
such as business formation, succession planning, stock incentive plans and deferred compensation. Carol
is a past President of both the Boston Estate Planning Council and the National Association of Estate Plan‐
ners and Councils. In 2005 received the recognition as the Estate Planner of the Year by the Boston Estate
Planning Council.
