During a time of institutional crisis and transitional leadership, I was asked by the interim president
to serve as the dean responsible for all academic clinical departments and the broad clinical
enterprise of the institution. With the arrival of a new President and CEO, the organizational
structure of the institution was completely changed. The new president assumed the role of
executive dean of the college with all department chairs directly reporting to him. The dean of
clinical affairs position was eliminated, as were all senior vice president titles.
Served as dean with full budgetary and operational responsibility and authority over 17 clinical
academic departments, with total annual budgets of $750 million, $150 million in annual research
expenditures, responsible for clinical, educational and research missions of these departments

large proportion of managed care patients, the other in the Harris County Hospital District (HCHD),

Designed new four year curriculum for the HCHD residency program under the national Preparing
the Personalized Physician for Practice (P4) project
Led the establishment of the four year elective International Health Track for Baylor College of
Medicine medical students
Established Baylor Shoulder-to-Shoulder international health project in rural Honduras as a teaching
laboratory for medical students and residents
Implemented Logician, the first electronic health record installation at Baylor College of Medicine in
1999. Provided leadership in the roll out of this HER across the institution
Designed new academic and clinical space to house department, coordinated move to new facility
Led the transformation of Baylor Family Medicine to implement all of the features of the New Model of
Family Medicine practice. This practice was one of the early participants in the Idealized Design of
Clinical Office Practice sponsored by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Baylor Family
Medicine is recognized by the institution as the gold standard for a patient friendly, service
oriented practice
Increased the departmental budget by 80% in 11 years
Developed an active departmental research program
Developed and directed SPURnet, a practice-based primary care research network with 30 primary
