Note from the Publisher: A few weeks into the New Year and have your “exercise or workout buddy” quit

on you already? Did you know that teaming up with a workout partner can be more fun and even help you

shed more pounds? Most people put efforts in finding the right workout program whether it’s going to the gym

or joining a walking club but many never put a support system in place. Social support is a positive factor in

influencing weight loss but a workout partner who is your best friend may not be an ideal workout partner.



Once you find someone to call a workout buddy, try to set up some type of contact system for you and your

workout buddy. If you need support from your workout buddy by email then make sure you pick a partner who

is computer savvy like you. If you need face-to-face contact, pick a buddy with a similar need. The goal of

workout buddies is to spend time listening and encouraging each other, even if it means cooking together or

exercising together.



Remember supporting your workout partner might mean coming by and dragging them off to the gym or to go

walking. However, the best way to stay on track is to draw up a “buddy contract” which is a document that

spells out your mutual goals and the way you plan to help each other achieve them. Be sure to include short

range goals such as "I want to get to the gym three times a week and I need you to go with me" and long-term

goals such as how much weight you'd like to lose, or how many miles you'd eventually like to walk each week.

Put the agreement somewhere where you can read it often such as on the refrigerator, in your purse, etc.



If your workout routine with your workout buddy is not working out then don’t be afraid to call it quits. If you are

not getting what you need or if your buddy wants more than you can give, just move on. The purpose of a

“workout or exercise buddy” is to enhance the weight loss journey for both workout partners and make it easier

and more fun for each of you but if that’s not happening, there’s no point sticking it out. Try to find another

workout partner or go at it alone. Don’t let anyone derail your workout program and most of all do it for

Black people are used to being broke. No one bothers to tell their personal story of growing up in poverty, because you probably have a friend with a

better story to tell. But times are slowly getting better, as we went from watching "Good Times" and "Sanford and Son," to enjoying "The Cosby Show"

and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire." Although we've got some work to do, black folks are always "movin' on up." Here are five things you can do to get

your money right in 2010: 1) Keep a budget. If you don't know where your money is going, you won't know where your money went. Budgeting is the

first step toward good money management. 2) Save at least 10 percent of your income: If you can tithe to your pastor every week, then you can

afford to tithe to your savings. Your pastor isn't going to save you if you get into a financial bind, and although 10 percent may seem like a lot to save,

the truth is that you can do it if you cut the fat out of your budget. 3) Put your money to work: The key to wealth building is getting to the point where

your money works as hard for you as you do for it. Put your money into investments and other instruments that can lead to natural progress in your

personal financial situation. 4) Remember the half million dollar Happy Meal: As I mentioned in a previous article, if you save the $2.50 that it takes

to buy a Happy Meal (every day for a five-day work week) and put it into an investment account that earns the average annual stock market return of 11

percent, that money will grow to half a million bucks in 40 years. Now, imagine saving $10 per day instead? As Einstein once said, "The most powerful

force in the universe is compound interest." 5) Live a wealthy life: Money should not be your primary obsession. Instead, it is a tool for the

enhancement of your life and the lives of those around you. As you stack your "cheddar," keep it all in perspective. Life is a journey of love, and the

wealth of your life is measured by far more than the size of your bank account. By Dr. Boyce Watkins

In this current economy, housing prices and property values are down and as a result revenue projections for DeKalb County are also down.

The Board of Commissioners has been presented with a 2010 Budget recommendation from the CEO that includes a recommendation for a tax increase

as well as manpower reductions. The Board has some serious decisions to make prior to adopting a budget by March 1, 2010 as it relates to this year’s

budget. The reality of the situation is that we must adopt a balanced budget by March 1, 2010 and to do this we, as a Board, have to look for ways in

which to decrease the operating expenses for DeKalb County. I am appealing to the residents of DeKalb and asking for your input on ways in which the

Board can balance this budget and continue to provide service and needed services you as citizens of DeKalb. I am seeking your input on suggestions

on how we may accomplish salary savings and any revenue generating ideas you may have. Your ideas and suggestions should be provided as soon

Okay everyone here is the scoop. Mayor Kasim Reed is the 5 BLACK Mayor of Atlanta and won the position by

the skin of his teeth…and his first order of business besides announcing he was looking for a new police chief,

was to declare war on the homeless by announcing “HE WOULD BE TOUGH ON PANHANDLERS!”



Shirley Franklin, the last black mayor, first order of business was to fire 300 mostly black city workers right

before X-mas. She also declared a war on panhandlers by creating new laws against them ONE WEEK before

Katrina then the entire city of Atlanta was swamped by Katrina evacuees. She went on to close down many

recreational centers for our kids (23 Recreation Centers Closes- http://blogs.creativeloafing.com/freshloaf/2008/12/02/franklin-lays-

off-222-more-workers-close-rec-centers/) and gave the city to everyone… every group… except blacks. Why is it that all

these black mayors feel they have to declare war on black people just to hold their positions? I suggest we keep

American Unemployment and the Impact on African Americans

A recent holiday cartoon by acclaimed cartoonist Walt Handelsman featured a number of empty gift boxes that were labeled “jobs” and the character in

the cartoon was looking inside one of them quite disappointed.

That view reflects the mindset of most regarding the state of American unemployment. There have been lots of promises regarding job

creation wrapped in fancy program titles, but once the pretty paper and decorative bows are removed, the reality that is the rising tide of American

unemployment sets in.

While American unemployment has reached record numbers, it is dwarfed by the even higher rate of unemployment impacting African

Americans who do not even have the opportunity or access to open the pretty, yet empty boxes.

According to Department of Labor figures, while the American unemployment rates were in double digits (approximately 10.2 percent in

October 2009), the figure for African Americans was closer to 16 percent (approximately 15.7 percent). This has caused much concern as the issues

regarding just how and when these jobs will be created and who will benefit.

According to reports in the Associated Press, the Federal Reserve does not fully expect the economic recovery will be strong enough to drive down the

jobless rate quickly. Currently, many mainstream media outlets have begun efforts to attack President Obama’s plans to increase job opportunities

overall, by infusing the discontent within the African American community. Organizational leaders including Rev. Al Sharpton of the National Action

Network and Marc Morial of the National Urban League have been working aggressively to keep the main issues regarding American unemployment

and the impact on African Americans in the forefront.

Morial recently sent a detailed letter and program outline to President Obama who stepped up his job creation agenda in light of the increase

in American unemployment. Morial was quoted from his letter in the Baltimore Afro-American as saying that, “More than one out of every three

unemployed worker has been out of a job for six months or more. The situation facing African Americans and Latino workers is even bleaker.”

While Rev. Sharpton has made it clear on various media outlets including “Larry King Live” and his own radio show that he may not agree with

all of President Obama’s policies, he is willing to work with the President who inherited a bad situation and has been trying “to clean up a lot of mess in a

number of areas that he inherited from previous administrations.”

One area that remains underserved within the African American community and could be instrumental in addressing American unemployment

is entrepreneurship. With small businesses representing over 80 percent of the American economy and a major job creator, serious support given

towards developing small businesses would help to bring down the unemployment rate.

The state of Maryland recently launched the Minority Business University initiative to provide a forum for minority and women-owned

businesses to identify areas to build and grow their operations, especially in the area of financing. Lack of access to capital has long been the death

knell for minority businesses. Now, with federal directives in place for the major lending institutions, who were backed by taxpayer dollars, to become

better community partners there is hope for small, minority-owned businesses to have an opportunity to get the assistance they need to see their dreams

become a reality.

There is no one solution to American unemployment, but the recovery process has to start somewhere. Maybe this time next year, the holiday

cartoon by Handelsman will feature gift boxes that will highlight new businesses, more jobs and happy, diverse faces. It is the holiday season after

all…we can still believe in a thing called hope (Helping Others Provide Employment).

The violation is a secondary offense, meaning that motorists cannot be stopped or cited only for failing to turn on their lights. However,

it can be tacked on to something else, such as speeding or another moving violation

A lights-on violation will be a minor misdemeanor punishable by up to a $100 fine plus court costs.

4 We need a group of Black African American Attorneys to file the patent, negotiate the agreements, and address all legal issues

regarding getting this product to the marketplace.

5 We need a group of Black African American Employees to be trained and employed. A criminal background will not be used as a

barrier to deny them employment.

6 We need a group of Black African American Investors willing to invest the seed and startup capital to fund this project.

7 We need a 5,000 Black African American People willing donate $25 to help fund the launching of this project.

We have all the ideas, money, knowledge, skills and expertise within the Black African American Community to move toward self-

empowerment and self-sufficiency. Ignore those whose purpose is to help maintain us in our current conditions. Judge them by their

Actions or Inaction.

This is a great opportunity for Black African American Leadership to step forward to get something positive done. They must

After 10 years, Tavis Smiley is ending his annual State of the Black Union conference, which spawned best-selling books and his

critical stance toward Barack Obama.

The activist and PBS host said Wednesday that he needs time to focus on other projects, such as his four prime-time specials this year

and his book company, which recently announced plans to publish the musician R. Kelly's memoir.

Smiley also said that, unlike a decade ago, black issues now are being addressed by numerous other media outlets, commentators and

bloggers.

The State of the Black Union "doesn't have the premium that it used to have - and that's a good thing," Smiley told The Associated

Press. Smiley, who hosts a nightly half-hour talk show on PBS, said he was inspired to start the conference because black issues were

rarely addressed in the president's State of the Union speech or the national media.

The conference, which took place each February, was broadcast on C-SPAN and averaged 7,000 to 10,000 participants each year as it traveled to

various cities. It drew almost 20,000 people in Jamestown, Va., in 2007, when it marked the 400th anniversary of the first arrival of

African slaves in North America. Smiley said money was not a factor in ending the series - which cost "well over seven figures" each

year and was free to the public - because Exxon Mobil and Nationwide Insurance had committed to major sponsorship deals in 2010.

Wells Fargo was a major sponsor last year, which led to some criticism of Smiley after the National Association for the Advancement of

Colored People filed a lawsuit accusing Wells Fargo of pushing blacks into high-interest mortgage loans while whites with the same

qualifications got lower rates. Smiley said he ended his deal with Wells Fargo as soon as the lawsuit was filed.

Wells Fargo & Co. has denied race played any role in how it did business.

Over the years, the State of the Black Union conference became a major event, drawing a wide range of influential speakers such as

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Louis Farrakhan, Johnnie Cochran, Nikki Giovanni, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Magic Johnson.

The 2005 conference generated the idea for the book "Covenant with Black America," about issues facing the black community. One of

Smiley's fondest State of the Black Union memories is holding the book aloft at the 2006 event and watching thousands of people in the

audience do the same - "just the fact that we did what we said we were going to do."

The book became a No. 1 New York Times best-seller. Smiley published two more books in the series, which focused on putting the

"Covenant" into action and then on holding politicians accountable.

That led to Smiley's critical stance toward Obama because of the presidential candidate's insistence that the best way to help blacks

was improving the entire economy, rather than specific policies targeting black problems.

Obama said he was too busy campaigning to attend the 2008 State of the Black Union event. Clinton was the only presidential

candidate there.

Smiley endured much criticism as a result of his position on Obama, but the new president spoke to Smiley's gathering by satellite from

the White House in February 2009.

That was Smiley's other favorite memory.

"That the president of the United States felt compelled to join us live to acknowledge the power of this symposium over 10 years, and

what it had accomplished, raising the kind of issues that helped him get elected - that was significant," Smiley said.

Chronology of the State of the Black Union

The State of the Black Union has been held each February since 2000 during Black History Month, following the president's annual State of the Union

address to the nation in January. It has often paralleled significant events in American history.

 The 2001 forum took place in Washington, D.C. a few weeks after the controversial inauguration of President George W. Bush.

 The 2002 symposium in Philadelphia occurred five months after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

 President Bush outlined his case for invading Iraq just prior to the 2003 SOBU in Detroit.

 President Bush defended his case for the Iraq war in 2004 just before the symposium in Miami.

 The 2005 conversation in Atlanta followed Bush's re-election to a second term.

 In Houston, the 2006 conference focused on economic empowerment six months following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

 The 2007 SOBU symposium, in partnership with Jamestown 2007, commemorated the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in

Jamestown, Virginia.

 The 2008 symposium in New Orleans engaged more than 1,000 volunteers to work in community service projects to help rebuild post-Katrina New

Orleans.

 In 2009, President Obama introduced the final SOBU with his commitment to bring issues of importance to African Americans to the White House.

Derrion Albert, the 16-year-old murdered student from Chicago, was not the first tragic killing of an Afrikan by an Afrikan. It also wasn’t the last,

unfortunately. What it was is the latest in a series of acts of self-hatred. Malcolm X called that Afrikans wearing the mask of self-hatred. He said that

making Afrikans wear that mask was (is) to worst thing white supremacy did to us and that it was (is) our responsibility to get the mask off our face and

our people’s face (mind).

Any of us, who truly believe that Malcolm was “Our Shining Black Prince” disrespect his memory if we continue to seat silent while other deaf, dumb, and

blind Afrikans continue to wear that mask. We disrespect the tremendous sacrifice of the Three-Ms – Medgar, Malcolm and Martin -- by not doing

something to remove the mask from the mind of “our children”. We disrespect the principles of our Afrikan Heritage and Ancestry by not teaching “our

children” to respect Black Life.

Whether we say it elegantly and Ebonically, our Elders’ Voices must make the point to “our children” that every Black Life has real value and must not be

senselessly extinguished before it has fulfilled the Creator’s intent. Our Elders must pass on the wisdom, rituals and traditions of living an Afrikan-

centered life-style to “our children” for be they cursed deaf, dumb and blind for eternity yet we fail them.

The alternative for Afrikan people living a cursed life is to live life to become the kind of people that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., envisioned us becoming

when he described us by saying, “When the history books are written in future generations, the historians will have to pause and say, “There lived a

great people – a black people – who injected new meaning and dignity into the veins of civilization.” It is that majestic vision of black people that we

must imbue into “our children” that will have them “believing in the spirituality, humanity and genius of Black people, and in our renewed pursuit of these

values” (from the New Afrikan Creed).

And by-the-way, Jacksonains do not need to go to Chicago to witness senseless violence in the Black community. Most recently, we simply need to

remember, and never forget the 27 year nurse who simply wanted to enjoy a night out at Birdland. Yatashi Johnson has to be the straw that broke the

camel’s back of “Silent from the Elders” in our community. We do not have to wait for the next one. We have to hear Medgar Evers telling us “Every

time I think about kids and their innocence, I would wonder how whites can make the youngsters suffers so.” Although, today he undoubtedly would ask

how we can make our own children suffer so.

These messages from Malcolm, Martin and Medgar has to resonate today in the Black community through the Afrikan Elders in our community as a

message to the next generation to value Black Life. That message must be sent out to “our children” repeatedly by Our Elders until it sinks in for “our

children”. And mechanisms must be put in place for “our children” to be able to properly deal with and release their anger and frustrations without

harming themselves and others. The Afrikan Village must begin to raise “our children”.

To get it started, I make myself available, and/or will organize a panel of Afrikan Elders from our community, to mediate any dispute where the

Youth Leadership & Personal Development/Life Skills Training Project

"Changing Attitudes; Increasing Aptitudes ...Elevating Altitudes"

Operation Shoestring and Kuumba Promos has collaborated to facilitate a bi-weekly Saturday Seminar Series for youth leadership and personal

development called Leadership/Personal Development and Life Skills w/OPS-KP. The seminar series is intended to introduce leadership skills and life

management skills to Jackson area youth to build their capable for community leadership and service. The seminar series began Saturday, September

12, 2009 and convenes every second and fourth Saturday at the Operation Shoestring location, 1711 Bailey Avenue, 10am-12noon. To enroll your child

The seminars are free and provides guidance to the youth for doing Self Assessments, Goal Setting, Leadership Assignments, Strategic Planning for

Academic Success, College Prep, and Career Development Assessment. The personal introspections will aid the students in preparing for the next

stage of life in their developmental process, with "Success" as the ultimate goal of the preparation. "We are looking at ‘Changing Attitudes; Increasing

Aptitudes ...Elevating Altitudes’ for inner-city youth", according to Lead Trainer Asinia Lukata.

Complimenting the personal development guidance, the seminar series will also provide life skills training for the students. Areas of life skills training will

include, but not be limited to, Improving Self Image, Decision Making, Myths & Realities associated with Smoking, Alcohol and Marijuana, Violence & the

Media, Coping with Anxiety and Anger, Communication Skills, Social Skills, Assertiveness & Resolving Conflicts. Still further, the seminars will emphasis

cultural enrichment to enhance the student’s sense of self-efficacy. Cultural field trips and discussions on African American History 101, Intro to

Kwanzaa, Women’s History 101, Juneteenth and written assignments will help re-enforce their cultural pride and motivation to achieve their life goals.

The partnership between Kuubma Promos and Operation Shoestring was made possible because of the similarity of missions of the two groups.

Operation Shoestring, which is "investing in the hearts and minds in our community, and Kuumba Promos, which is "promoting the increased learning of

Black History and Black Culture in an edu-taining way", both want our youth to strive for excellence. The LPD-LS Seminar Series promotes those

attitudes in the youth.

Take Back WBAI

Please spread far and wide. Another Example of Why it is Important for Truly Progressive People to Become Involved in the Struggle to

Take Back WBAI. Below is R. Paul Martin's vicious and unprovoked attack on the People's Organization for Progress (P.O.P) and its Chair, Lawrence

Hamm. As most people know, P.O.P is a well respected organization, based in Newark, New Jersey, that has a noble reputation for being on the front

line of the struggle against police brutality, social and economic injustice, the war, etc. P.O.P. is known for strongly fighting for the liberation of

oppressed people everywhere. And I know that this organization is filled with many people, including the Chair, who have dedicated their life to the

Movement. This I can say with certainty. On the other hand, R. Paul Martin is the producer and host of "Back of the Book," which airs on WBAI and is

the most boring, irrelevant and wasteful use of bandwidth on the FM dial. He has been on the WBAI LSB for 6 years and his term has recently ended.

He is an ally of the ACE majority on the Local Station Board and is a supporter of the current coup under Grace Aaron and LaVarn Williams.

While these particular comments might be from one person, they are representative of the politics of Martin and his allies. Racist and derogatory

comments are the order of the day among them. And they have their supporters of color at the station such as Kathy Davis, LaVarn Williams, Shawn

Rhodes, etc. who publicly support them in spite of these comments. And it is with more and more frequency that R. Paul and his ACE allies attack

progressive organizations that have openly endorsed the Justice and Unity Campaign at WBAI. These organizations support Justice and Unity

because they share similar political views and a commitment to social activism against injustice. The targets of ACE's mendacious propaganda and

rabidity have consistently been Betty Dopson of CEMOTAP (Committee to End Media Offensive to African People), who was targeted long before she

ever decided to run for the WBAI LSB; Suzanne Ross and Gwen DeBrow of the "NY Free Mumia Coalition;" Nellie Bailey of the Harlem Tenant's

Council (Mitchel Cohen, the chair of the Board publicly referred to Nellie and Gwen as attack dogs) and now Larry Hamm and the People's Organization

for Progress. I believe that organizations and individuals should have the right to endorse whomever they choose, without fear of their reputations being

attacked and their names being besmirched all over the internet in malicious propaganda campaigns by board members who are supposed to represent

WBAI and Pacifica. This behavior is diametrically opposed to what this foundation is supposed to be about -- it is the antithesis of the values of

WHY ART WITHOUT WALLS IS BOYCOTTING THE NAACP IMAGE AWARDS

I have been a TV viewer of the NAACP IMAGE AWARDS for many years; for the most part I have enjoyed the entertainment although I must admit,

being occasionally mystified by some of the choices made when it appeared popularity trumped talent.

Last year was indeed, a historic one with the election of the first African American President, Barrack Obama. As the cameras panned the 150,000

faces of a divided nation who were present in Chicago’s Grant Park to celebrate, they stopped long enough for a close-up shot of the Rev. Jesse

Jackson with tears rolling down his face. One could only imagine what was going through his mind. The cynics thought: Rev. Jackson was envious

because he was not in Obama’s place. After all, did he not have two unsuccessful bids for the office?

The arrogance of the young voters who were “high” on the moment but, “low” on the political history of the Civil Rights Movement could not get their ”one

time voter’s ego” out of the way long enough to appreciate the commitment to social justice made by many persons such as the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

Which leads me to the reason why I am writing this letter.

The buzzword throughout Obama’s Democratic Presidential Campaign was “Change.” “A CHANGE IS GONNA COME”, written and recorded by the

late Sam Cooke, was the unofficial Civil Rights Movement song of the 60’s. It became Obama’s campaign mantra.

Everybody was talking and singing, but no one stopped long enough to acknowledge the legacy of one of the greatest artist in American history. So, I

decided to do something about it. I called the NAACP Hollywood office and inquired about a list of African American artists who’d been acknowledged

and/or received special attention based upon their contributions as an artist and activist. The (receptionist) woman who answered the telephone at the

NAACP Hollywood office was abrupt in her response to my inquiry in this regard. “She said, “I don’t know”. I suggested that she should find out.

Despite the fact that I left my telephone number (with the expectation of a return call to my inquiry), I never heard from that woman or any other NAACP

representative/decision maker.

When a decent amount of time had passed; it became crystal clear that the person I had spoken to had no intentions of providing me with information

about my inquiry. With this revelation, I wrote to Mr. Bullock, Director of the NAACP Hollywood Branch, March 29th, 2009, with respect to the NAACP

finding some special way to honor Sam Cooke at the 2009 NAACP IMAGE AWARDS (or future NAACP IMAGE AWARDS). My parcel correspondence

was not returned “addressee unknown”:

In the view of the aforementioned, it is reasonable to assume my parcel correspondence was delivered. To this date I have not received the courtesy of

a response; particularly after sending at least two additional letters subsequent to my letter of March 28, 2009, numerous telephone calls, e-mails and

faxes to Mr. Bulluck at the NAACP.

I am not a picky person or someone without experience of directing an organization. I am fully aware that Mr. Bulluck and the NAACP receive thousands

of letters. I do not expect them to respond to every letter. However, in this age of technology there is absolutely no reason or excuse why I or anyone

else should not received at the very least, a standard form letter of acknowledgement. Succinctly, as the NAACP has ignored the contributions of the

legendary Sam Cooke, so have my communications to Mr. Bulluck. Let me say before I go any further that my complaint is not about “sour grapes”, as I

do not drink anyone’s kool-aid. It is to address the pitiful, disrespectful manner in which those who hold the public trusts often times mistreat, ignore, and

take for granted their constituents. When institutional white racism in the film industry continued to ignore Black artists the NAACP was in the vanguard

of calling them to task; they presented this industry with a long list of checkable grievances and when the industry did not respond, the NAACP called for

a boycott. I am following suite. Walls an advocacy organization for artists and the acknowledgement and preservation of our work I am boycotting the

NAACP Hollywood Image Awards. I will not support an organization that claims to speak for the people but is too busy, to important to do something a

simple thing as acknowledge a letter.

able to, even religious and spiritual houses should very definitely be involved in the struggle to bring these women home, this is madness!! One

Gladys Scott wrote this update for you all: "Peace to all my supporters and friends for believing in me and Jamie's freedom. I would like to thank

everyone! I'm so glad whenever I get mail and I will try to answer everybody when I have stamps. My life here has been bad, but I work and go to

school and am trying to stay strong. Right now I speak to kids from different schools and try to tell them how prison is and so I am trying to turn a

negative situation into a positive outcome. I miss Jamie so much. I wish that she was with me, but this prison is so wrong. The only thing I can do is

pray and ask God to give me peace through all that goes on in here. I have seen so many people make it out and pray to God that I live long enough to

make it out to be with my kids and grandkids, and I want to take care of my mother who I owe so much. She has been there with us since day one and I

am so proud to be her daughter. She makes me not want to give up and I know that I have to stay strong for her, she is the inspiration of my life. Scott

County told me that I was going to rot in prison but I know that's a lie. Justice will come, the truth will come out that we are innocent and the system is

corrupted. We are going to keep on fighting until someone hears our voice for justice. Happy holidays to all our supporters and may God's peace keep

We, once again, are asking for an end of year PUSH to send letters to the Governor and Attorney General per the instruction of the Civil Rights Attorney

who is assisting Mrs. Rasco, they truly need to be deluged with requests from everyone outraged by this case. Please don't procrastinate ... it will mean

so much to check this off your "to do" list of accomplishments for this year. We are also still in need of a criminal attorney who will take on these cases

and direct us on the best ways to move forward, so please know that the search still continues for someone who will help to end this family's nightmare.

Thank you all for your support this year, a lot may have changed in this country but sadly one thing remains the same: Jamie and Gladys Scott are still

suffering the cruel and inhuman punishment of these outrageous double-life sentences!

The Honorable Attorney General Holder:

I am writing to request that you investigate the cases of Jamie and Gladys Scott. The Scott Sisters were given double life sentences each in October of

1994 for armed robbery in the state of Mississippi. No one was injured or murdered. One witness states that about 11 dollars was netted in the armed

robbery. All witnesses and victims of this crime have testified that the Scott Sisters were not involved in the robbery. Witnesses testified that they were

coerced and threatened to lie on the Scott Sisters.

A 14 year old witness testified that he signed a statement which was prepared for him before he entered Deputy Sheriff Marvin Williams’ Office. This

statement was signed by the 14 year old without an attorney present. He was told that he would be released from the local jail the next morning if he

signed it. He was not released.

This is an egregious wrongful conviction and the Scott Sisters and their family has suffered now 15+ years.



Jamie and Gladys Scott are housed in Pearl, Mississippi at Central Mississippi Correctional Facility. Their ID numbers are Jamie Scott #19197 and

Puerto Rican Political Prisoner Carlos Alberto Torres Parole Hearing Scheduled

Puerto Rican Political Prisoner Carlos Alberto Torres will meet with the Parole Commission's hearing examiner once again on January 19. The Bureau

of Prisons continues its role of interfering with his release. Carlos Alberto learned today that the BOP received an order from the Parole Commission on

November 12, 2009, indicating that the Commission wanted to see him about the disciplinary report at the next available date. The FCI Pekin staff

member responsible for communicating this to Carlos Alberto told him simply, "I must have overlooked this." The prison disciplinary committee found him

guilty of possessing home made knives which, unbeknownst to him, a cellmate had hidden in the light fixture of the cell. This finding came not only after

the first guilty decision was expunged, but after the guilty cellmate confessed in person to the committee. The U.S. Parole Commission had postponed

its decision whether to adopt its hearing examiner's recommendation to release Carlos Alberto on parole on April 3, 2010, waiting for the disciplinary

committee's decision. At the January 19 hearing, Carlos Alberto will ask the Commission to adopt the recommendation and order his release, and to

ignore the Bureau of Prisons' attempts to derail his parole. Write to the Parole Commission to encourage them to adopt the recommendation and order

Board that will hear his application. This is the last event in a series of several to secure letters of support for Sundiata in this effort. Special guests for

Please find attached a letter of support for Sundiata Acoli. Your support is needed. Print it, sign it, mail it. It's that easy! More instructions:

1) Sundiata's parole hearing is scheduled to take place in February 2010 and Sundiata turns 73 years old on January 14th. We cannot

underestimate the importance and critical nature of this hearing and our letters. Letters of support are due January 8, 2010.

We just celebrated our 10th Anniversary! Thanks to so many of you for joining us for this successful event. If you missed the party, you can still

contribute to making our next decade even more significant.

In 1999 we became an organization “on paper” and on January 1st, 2000 we moved boxes of tapes into our present space. We built shelves. We started

to gather equipment and began sorting through many thousands of hours of materials-a task that continues today. We continue to add to the growing

audio and video collection. Ten years ago we began with a modest budget of $100 per month which covered rent, phones, and little else. As you may

know, we’ve never requested government or corporate funding. We receive no operating support from large foundations. We raise funds among a small

number of people. We knew then that a community-based, grassroots approach would lead to a much stronger type of organization – an archive not tied

to any outside agendas or funding trends.

Today we have a viable community organization that works with high school and college students in an active youth training program and serves as a

source of unique historical materials for researchers, teachers and documentary producers. In ten years, we’ve produced CDs and videos, catalogued

thousands of hours of media, been sampled by garage bands and professional rockers, spoken-word artists, jazz musicians, and DJs. These amazing

sounds also live at the Museum of the African Diaspora, in murals on the streets of the Mission, and in documentaries done by independent artists who

seek context and content. The audio and video collection of the Freedom Archives is sampled, broadcast, and web streamed in schools, festivals, and

community centers. Our materials are used throughout the world.

We’ve met amazing people and collaborated in creative ways-across generations and with all the richness that collectivity promotes. Our video Legacy

of Torture played an important role in the victory of the San Francisco 8. We’ve gained support and supporters by organizing, rather than turning to the

corporate and non-profit game. We are there for the community, and that community is there for us. That’s why we’re celebrating ten strong years!

We’ve enclosed a flyer that lists the CDs and DVDs we have produced and announces our next film – COINTELPRO 101 – which will be released in the

spring of 2010.

Looking toward the future, our ability to maintain our integrity and continue to expand our capacity depends on you. Every contribution counts, no matter

the amount. Please show us that you agree with our goals – the need to preserve radical history and culture – the need to spark the imagination of new

generations by introducing them to the inspiring voices and images of the past – and the need to create tools that can succeed in strengthening social

justice work for years to come.

URGENT! Re-entry Bills

The only way our bills get heard and voted on is if senators Codey, Buono, Girgenti, and/or Sarlo post the bills, move them through committee,

and get them to the floor by next week. Right now, Girgenti has said LPS will not meet again. Sarlo's Judiciary committee seems to have a very full

plate. Buono is not interested in posting anything with money. Codey is reported to be very receptive to the bills. Thank you for the hundreds of calls

being made to district offices. I'm sorry to say it like this but if the Senate will not post the bills, then the bills are pretty much dead. If they do move/post

them, then we will have accomplished something remarkable. Do whatever you can.

book or will you go to other small or large publishing companies for help? The two books that I recommend you read as soon as

possible while you are writing your book are “The Self-Publishing Manual: How To Write, Print and Sell Your Own Book”

by Dan Poynter (www.parapublishing.com), the “Self-Publishing Guru” and “The Publishing Game: Publish a Book in 30 Days”

by Fern Reiss www.publishinggame.com. Between both of these books you should have enough information on how to proceed

forward in putting out a professional book. Also look for writing groups on the internet or in the community at libraries where you can
