• Determine which graphic organizer is
most suitable for a task or objective
• Use Inspiration 8 to design a graphic
organizer for a given objective.
What is a graphic organizer?
Graphic Organizers are visual tools used primarily to make
“
and represent connections and relationships among
ideas and concepts.” - David Hyerle
A graphic organizer is a visual representation of knowledge.
Graphical organizers convert complex and messy
information connections into meaningful displays.
-Jamie McKenzie
Why Graphic Organizers?
Help students understand the relationships between
old and new concepts
Teach students to clarify their thinking
and to process, organize and prioritize
new information
Give students ownership of the information
Increase students understanding of a difficult
concept with a visual representation
Research shows images:
Increase comprehension
Increase the understanding of a concept
Make an abstract topic more concrete
Increase recollection of significant ideas
Reveal patterns, interrelationships and
interdependencies
Benefits
• Students are better able to follow
teacher’s presentation- actively
involved.
• New information can be related to
previous learning- build in cumulative
review.
• Charts, tables, and graphs can
stimulate student interest-lessons are
more appealing.
Benefits
• Students learn organizational skills
through example and use- it even
makes studying easier.
• These skills transfer to other content
areas, resulting in increased student
achievement.
• Thinking maps can be used to promote
higher level thinking skills.
