MV Kids learn about Wind Energy

Centuries ago, some clever people in the Netherlands found a way to use

wind to make energy and do some of their work for them. Maybe you have

seen pictures of the big machines they built that looked like tall houses with big

fans on top. They were windmills. As the wind blew, it turned large sails, like those

on a sailing ship, that were arranged in a circle. The sails were connected to grinding

wheels inside the windmills that spun around and crunched, or milled, grain into flour.

Today, clever people all around the world are

using machines something like windmills to make

energy of a different kind—electricity.

About 150 miles straight west of Montgomery

Village, just outside the town of Thomas, West

Virginia, is something that’s amazing to see. Huge

propellers on tall towers—44 of them—spin slowly

but strongly as the wind blows, making electricity

for homes, schools and other buildings. This is

called wind power, and the machines are called

wind generators. Wind power can help reduce the

need to burn fossil fuels such as oil and coal in

generating electricity.

Only a small amount of the electrical power

we need today in the United States is being made

by wind generators. But that seems likely to change. One reason is

that a wind generator doesn’t create any pollution. (Burning coal and

oil to make electricity creates smoke and soot, in the same way that

burning gasoline in a car produces exhaust.) Another reason is that someday, many years from now, the

world could run out of fossil fuels, but we will never run out of wind.

Wind generators work well in places where the wind blows almost all the time, day and night, at a

constant speed. (You might think they would work great in a hurricane, but that’s not so.)

A large number of wind generators located in the same place, like the 44 towers in

West Virginia, is called a wind farm. It’s a good name, because the area looks like a

farmer’s field full of giant flowers.

Why aren’t these modern-day windmills popping up everywhere? For one thing, they

are expensive to build. For another, some people don’t like the way the generators look.

And the spinning blades of the propellers can hurt or kill birds and bats. Finally, wind

generators have to be checked and repaired every

so often. This can cost a lot of money.

Still, many experts believe that the use of wind

generators will increase as the search for fossil

fuel gets more and more difficult. Don’t be surprised

if you see a growing number of them spinning and

making electricity in the years to come.
