The Asia Institute for Political Economy The School of Economics and Finance at the University of Hong Kong, The Fund For American Studies and Georgetown University jointly mounted the inaugural Asia Institute for Political Economy in the summer of 2002 in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The Asia Institute for Political Economy’s interdisciplinary curriculum engages students in a thorough examination of the fundamental concepts and theories of political economy and an advanced course in American Studies. The political economy component examines the structure and functions of a market economy in the context of such fundamental issues as competition, trade policy, fiscal and monetary policy, capital flows and foreign investment, and international financial markets. The American Studies component allows students to explore historical and cultural aspects of American society taught by guest lecturers from universities including Georgetown University and The University of Hong Kong, other regional experts and business leaders. The Institute is headed by Dr. Timothy D. Hau, Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Hong Kong and Institute Director Charles Brockner. For more information or updates on the progress of this Institute, log on to our website (www.econ.hku.hk and www.tfasasia.org). The University of Hong Kong The University of Hong Kong (www.econ.hku.hk), founded in 1911, is the territory’s oldest and most established institution, having produced generations of students who go on to become leaders and pillars of society. As a pre-eminent international university in Asia, it is the intellectual nexus for both East and West. Hong Kong U, as it is fondly known to alumni, staff and students, plays host to over 1,800 international students and boasts exchange programs with more than 100 institutions in 15 countries worldwide. HKU has been actively forming strategic international alliances and academic links with more than 400 overseas universities and research institutes. The Fund for American Studies For more than 30 years, The Fund for American Studies in Washington, DC has been preparing young people for the assumption of leadership positions in society by instilling in them the principles of honorable leadership and an understanding of the American system. The Fund sponsors intensive Institutes in partnership with Georgetown University each summer for outstanding university students who are active in their communities and on campus, and are likely to become the leaders of tomorrow. These Institutes combine classroom study of economics, ethics and government; internships with the US Congress, government agencies, the news media and business; and briefings by distinguished experts. Alumni of The Fund’s programs have risen to prominent positions in the fields of business, education, journalism, and government in the United States and throughout the world. Georgetown University Founded in 1789 in Washington, DC, Georgetown University is the oldest Catholic institution of higher learning in the United States. Since its beginning, Georgetown has received international recognition as a school with a student body characterized by its religious pluralism. Today, more than 12,000 students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries come to Washington, DC to enroll in one of Georgetown University’s five undergraduate schools, the graduate schools, or professional schools of law, medicine and business. Despite its vibrant growth and development in the 20th century, Georgetown University is still committed to individual attention and learning embraced by the small academy that staked its claim on Washington’s hilly riverbank more than 200 years ago. Georgetown’s School for Summer and Continuing Education is an academic partner in all programs sponsored by The Fund for Academic Studies.
