Introduction

Recap with pupils the key themes from the sun protection assembly. Protecting yourself is important due to

some of the negative effects of the sun (sunburn, eye damage). Remember to Wrap (wear suitable clothes:

t-shirt, long shorts), Splat (use sun cream or sun spray at least SPF30 to protect skin from the sun’s rays),

Hat (to protect your head, face and neck from the sun). Explain to pupils that they will have to design a hat

for the Wrap, Splat, Hat prize draw.

Main Activity - Whole class discussion

Explain to pupils that they will be shown different pictures of hats and the key thought to remember

is: Does the hat protect the head from the sun? Show pupils pictures of different hats: baseball hat,

fashionista, top hat, sun hat (wide brimmed straw hat), floppy hat (Johnny’s hat,) flat cap, woolly hat, beanie

hat, builder’s hat and bike helmet. When showing each picture, ask pupils to discuss in partners or mixed

ability pairs the suitability of the hat in the sun - where would we wear this hat? Which hat is best to wear in

the sun? How will the hat protect us? Explain to pupils that the hats that protect from the sun cover the whole

head, are made from materials that won’t overheat in the sun, and have some form of shading or protection

for the face and ears.

Whole class activity

Explain to pupils that they will create a class hat. The hat is for sun protection and must follow the sun

hat criteria

Sun Criteria:

1. It must cover the head

2. It must shade the face, ears and neck

Ask pupils to think of ideas for the hat. The teacher can select an idea and draw. Check with pupils that the

hat meets the criteria.

(continued)

Group work/Individual work

Ask pupils to start designing their own sun hats…. Explain that the hat is their own and can be as

crazy as possible i.e. an attached umbrella that squirts water and ice cream, water bottles attached,

or with a place to store your sun cream. The hat must follow the sun protection criteria

Plenary

Select some pupils to share their design and ask them to evaluate their work i.e. why they chose that

particular style of hat, choice of colour, what they like about their design and if they could redo the

hat what would they change about the design.

Assessment for learning

Do pupils understand the importance of wearing a hat in the sun?

Do they understand the process of designing?

Are pupils able to evaluate constructively?

Extension Work

Ask pupils to create warning signs to place around the school to remind pupils to protect themselves in the

sun by wearing a hat.
