Dear Parents and Guardians:
As part of an integrated unit created by the Team D teachers, your student will be leaving the school on February
3rd or 4th to participate in a day of community service. As you are aware, Junction City High School requires that
students complete 35 hours of community service before they can graduate. However, when we discuss service to
the community in our classrooms many students don’t know what opportunities are available to them, so they
choose to believe their only option is picking up trash, which is not very appealing.
The purpose of Community Service Day is not only to increase our student’s knowledge about the types of
community service available to them, but also to give them the contacts they need to develop a relationship with a
community organization in need of assistance. In the morning students will attend a panel discussion on youth
service opportunities and the impact of volunteering on personal lives. After the panel students will be
volunteering with a variety of organizations around our community: the Humane Society, Meals on Wheels, the
Senior Center, the Food Pantry of Geary County, USD 475’s pre-K program, CASA, Junction City Arts Council,
Junction City Little Theater, and Konza Prairie.
One of these locations, the Humane Society, requires a notarized permission slip. To allow your student to
participate in this event, you must sign his/her permission slip in front of a notary. Notaries can be found at your
local bank, the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library, and the JCHS Main Office. These permission slips need to be
returned by Monday, February 1st. If these permission slips are not returned, your student will not be able to
attend that opportunity and he/she may not go on the field trip at all depending on what space is available.
To ensure that our students are able to participate in as many different types of community service as possible, we
are in need of several adult volunteers for both of these days. We need at least four or five volunteers each day. If
you are willing and able to assist us on either or both days, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or at

is to our students and we appreciate your support!
