                        IB Physics I – HW #5
                        1D and 2D Kinematics
Be sure to setup each problem appropriately. Sketch a small drawing of each problem.
Show which relationship you are using, solve for the unknown variable, and then plug in the
numbers. Watch your sig figs, and be sure to circle or box your final answer.

1. What is wrong with this sentence: “The F-18 pulled out of its dive, maintaining a
constant velocity.” In terms of correct physics terminology, what should this statement
     say?

2. A hunter walks west 2.5 km and then walks south 1.8 km. Find the hunter’s a
     resultant displacement.
                                                                                              b 
                                                                                                      R
3. A rock is thrown with a velocity of 23.5 m/s at an angle of 22.5 to the horizontal. Find
the horizontal and vertical velocity components.

4. A boat is rowed east across the river with a constant speed
of 5.0 mi/h. If the current is 1.5 mi/h to the south, what v
                                                                                         b
direction must the boat row to get straight across? What is
the resultant speed across the river? 
                                                                                        v
5. How high will an arrow be 7 seconds after being shot straight up at 50 m/s?

6. A helium balloon is hovering at rest above the ground. The balloonist then cuts a sandbag
free and the balloon begins to move upwards with a constant velocity of 2 m/s while the
sandbag falls to the ground below. When the sandbag hits, the balloon is 50 m above the
     ground.

     a. How far above the ground was the balloon when the sandbag was first released?
     b. When the sandbag is halfway to the ground, what is its acceleration?

7. A car drives straight off a cliff that is 52.5 m tall. The car travels a horizontal distance
of 122 m. Find: (a) how much time it will take for the car to hit the lake below and (b)
the horizontal speed of the car.

                                                                                     Rev 1
                         Flamingo ________________________________________ Per___

8. A pool ball leaves a 0.60-meter high table with an initial horizontal velocity of 2.4 ms-1.
Predict the time required for the pool ball to fall to the ground and the horizontal
distance between the table's edge and the ball's landing location.

9. A soccer ball is kicked horizontally off a 22.0-meter high hill and lands a distance of 35.0
meters from the edge of the hill. Determine the initial horizontal velocity of the soccer
     ball.

10. A football is kicked with an initial velocity of 25 ms-1 at an angle of 45-degrees with the
horizontal. Determine the time of flight, the horizontal distance, and the peak height of
    the football.

11. A long jumper leaves the ground with an initial velocity of 12 ms-1 at an angle of 28-
degrees above the horizontal. Determine the time of flight, the horizontal distance, and
the peak height of the long-jumper.

12. The driver of a car slams on the brakes as a truck approaches the car head-on while
slowing uniformly with acceleration - 5.6 m/s2. The driver of the car is frozen with horror
for 4.2 s while the truck makes skid marks 62.4 m long. With what speed does the truck
    strike the car?

                                                                                      Rev 1
