Two, apparently independent failures occurred in the HIRO system last week. One
happened at the Piermont Pier and one at Oceanography. A summary and table of
events follow:
1. Something (perhaps a lightning storm) took out power to the Pier building on
Tuesday afternoon:
The UPS failed at 15:17:33 (UTC). Power was restored and the computer
came back and re-started the loggers at 15:31 (UTC).
The wind speed sensor was apparently damaged and emitted erroneous
data from the resumption of logging at 15:31(UTC) Jun 25, and ending at
11:30 (UTC) July 3, 2002.
The failed UPS was removed for repair/replacement at 15:30:35 (UTC)
Jun 25.
2. There was a lightning strike near IRI building on Wednesday afternoon that reset
the BIOS of the Ocean Roof node.
The network connection and logger went down at 17:40 (UTC) Jun 27.
Attempts to access the Ocean Roof node remotely and locally failed. The
machine had to be power cycled in order to re-gain access.
The network connection and RF link to the Pier was reestablished at 17:40
(UTC) Jun 27.
The Ocean Roof RM-Young started logging again on the Ocean roof
computer at 17:51(UTC) July 1.
3. A functional wind sensor was installed and tested on the Pier at 11:30 (UTC) July
3.
