FOOTBALL

RIVALRYsports rivalries are always intense and the intensity doesn’t dampen when it comes to high school football. This pressure of competi-

tion is felt by players, coaches, and management, but is perhaps felt strongest by the fans., many of whom continue their passion long

after graduation. Many rivalries span decades, can cause message boards to light up like nothing else, attract tens of thousands of

fans and often bring communities together. Even when no official titles or acclaim are at stake, for some schools winning a rivalry

game can make or break an entire season. California is no stranger to neighborhood rivals drawing standing room crowds.

east los angeles classic - garfield vs. roosevelt - nov 4

A crowd of about 25,000 is expected for the 76th regular-season meeting between Los

Angeles Roosevelt and L.A. Garfield in the East Los Angeles Classic at East Los Angeles

College. The game doubles as the homecoming for both teams and is one of the most

popular and competitive high school games in the nation. These two teams first met in

1925 and remains the longest standing rivarly this side of the Mississippi.

THE COWHIDE GAME - MT. WHITNEY VS. REDWOOD - NOV 11

The Cowhide game is fierce cross-town rivalry game held annually between Redwood

and Mt. Whitney High. Every year, Redwood Rangers and Mt. Whitney Pioneers fight

it out on the field for the Cowhide trophy, an actual cowhide. It has been a tradition be-

tween the two schools since 1955, and is the biggest sporting event in Visalia. People who

never attended either of the rival high schools show up due to the intensity of the game

and environment. It regularly draws a crowd of 9,000+.

NOVEMBER 11 MOUNT WHITNEY HIGH SCHOOL VISALIA, CA.

BATTLE FOR THE BELL - EDISON VS. FOUNTAIN VALLEY - NOV 4

The Battle for the Bell between Fountain Valley and Edison High School, is a heated rivalry

with the winner taking home an actual “bell” trophy. It is possibly the fiercest public school

rivalry in Orange County. Edison and Fountain Valley opened three years apart in the

1960s with campus buildings that were strikingly similar. The Chargers upset the more es-

tablished Barons in the first meeting in 1969, and bitterness between the schools intensified

over the years. In most years the 10,000-seat stadium might has barely been large enough to

meet demand. NOVEMBER 7, 2011 7:00 PM - ORANGE COAST COLLEGE

EAT LIKE CRAzY BEFORE THE MEAL

Whoever said that you should not eat all day to save room

for dinner was just plain wrong. Eat a healthy breakfast and BEAT THE

BULGE

lunch; you’re less likely to overeat if you have your hunger

under control. Fill up on salad before dinner and maybe even

bring healthly snacks to munch on throughout the day. It’s a

lot easier to make healthy choices when you’re not starving.

filling up on a delicious and nutritious salad.

Drink water with your meal

Water keeps you hydrated and fills some space in your

5 TIPS FOR A

stomach. If you are hydrated with non-sugary, non caffeinated

HEALTHIER HOLIDAY

beverages, you will feel better, be more alert, find yourself less

hungry and feel more fulfilled by what you do eat. If you

want to be festive, have some carbonated water with a lime

in a fancy glass.

Figure Out What’s Filling

When deciding which dishes to avoid, think filling --

the ones you eat a serving of and think, “Icouldn’t

eat another bite,” but somehow manage to

anyway, such as high-fat casseroles (e.g.,

broccoli and cheese), cream-based

soups, creamed potatoes, potatoes au

gratin, and stuffing with gravy. Chances

are, the more filling, the more fattening.

Don’t stand next to the food

table

Stand on the other side of the room or maybe

in another room altogether. Standing near the

food keeps the focus on eating, and guaranteed if

you stare at a piece of pie long enough YOU WILL

EAT IT. Focus on the company and the social event of

friends and family. Thanksgiving is about what we are

grateful for in our lives, not just the food.

Don’t Sleep it off – Walk It Off

Fight the urge to nap the evening away. Moving more than

usual -- a game of flag football in the front yard or a marathon

of shopping on Black Friday -- will help compensate for any

little indulgences. Try this before and after your meal.

LEFTOVER LUNCH

After-Thanksgiving Leftover Lunch

PER SERVING (1 sandwich):225 calories, 2g fat, 595mg sodium,

24g carbs, 5g fiber, 5.5g sugars, 30g protein

Ingredients:

2 slices light bread

2 tsp. fat-free mayonnaise

1/2 tbsp. cranberry sauce

3 oz. cooked and sliced skinless turkey breast

2 leaves lettuce

Directions: If you like, lightly toast your bread. Spread each slice with

mayo, and spread one slice with cranberry sauce. Lay sliced turkey

on top of the cranberry-smeared slice, place lettuce on top, and finish

the whole thing with the other slice of bread, mayo-side down. EAT!

hether you’re considering

just from the perspective

of plain old “cool” items

being usable for more

than one purpose is

definitely a trend we hope doesn’t go away.

Artist Antonio Scarponi takes that concept to a

new level, transforming a plain average hoodie

in ways only the imagination of a genius could

dream up. He remarks, “A hoodie is not just a

hoodie. In a world full of stuff, smart items

should be transformable, editable. They should

engage the possibility to be transformed into

something else. We do not need a new object. We

rather need to get rid of some of them, to reduce

the complex network of things around us.” So,

he’s introduced Just

Our dependence on the Internet is taking a toll on our researching ability: A recent two-year study by the

Ethnographic Research in Illinois Academic Libraries Project has found that students are so accustomed to using

search engines as a research tool that they can no longer perform sophisticated searches. What’s the problem?

A search engine doesn’t always give back the correct answer — the Internet shares a plethora of information,

and thereby serves as an invaluable resource, but not all the information is reliable. Add to this the concept of

“confirmation bias,” the tendency to seek out the information that confirms our existing opinions and ignore the

stuff that contradicts us, and we’ve got a recipe for ignorance on our hands. When researching, be it for school,
