BBS REPORT TO THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – OCTOBER 2008
Processors
We have dealt with all our previous Processors this year and have made contact with a new processor
– Wagstaff Trading in Melbourne. Their normal weight range is 20kg+ but this winter 2008 were
taking down to 18kg+ as all eastern state producers had trouble with enough feed to take lambs on to
heavier weights. We made contact with this processor when Swift Australia (previously Tasman)
stopped buying lambs in the winter of 2008 due to high prices and the high value of the $A.
The Tasman Group was taken over by multinational corporation Swift (Australia) Pty Ltd on the 1st
May 2008. Most of their procedures remain the same as before but they are making payments more
quickly than the old Tasman. As can be seen from our lamb statistics the majority of lambs are now
going to Swifts as they are usually ahead of the market in price, skin price and dressing percentage.
Country Fresh took the five score penalty off their lamb prices in the winter of 2008 which made them
a much more attractive destination for our lambs again.
Members are reminded that they are welcome to look through Peel Valley Abattoir at Tamworth at any
time. This is a very worthwhile exercise for you to see just how your lambs are performing over the
hook – the reality can be different to what you expect. If you are interested contact BBS and we will
organize for you to go with a couple of other members to be shown through the abattoir when your
lambs are being killed.
Coonamble Abattoir
Consultants doing a feasibility study for Coonamble Shire called to the TPLMC office in October 2007
to obtain industry information and guage interest in the opening of another abattoir in the area.
TPLMC was listed as one of the top contacts on their area list.
General
Meat Standards Australia
TPLMC conducted the first of the MLA organized workshops for MSA to present information on
improving eating quality of sheepmeat by targeting critical control points along the supply chain from
paddock to plate. These seminars were held in Gilgandra on the 6th May and Tullamore on the 7th May
2008 and were attended by members and non members.
TPLMC has encouraged members to become MSA accredited as part of the latest MLA research
programme to improve sheepmeat eating quality. TPLMC is committed to this development in the
lamb industry as proven by our TPLMC QA of the past ten years which is very similar to that of the
MSA programme. Some processors are already requesting MSA numbers to enable them to supply
certified MSA lamb to the consumer both in Australia and overseas.
Business Plan
This was completed in June 2008 after twelve months of data gathering by David Duffy and the team
at Success from Within. Members were surveyed by the team which gave everyone the opportunity to
express their ideas on the Co-op and have their information remain confidential. The information was
collated into a preliminary report and was presented to members at our General meeting in March
2008. A full business plan was presented to the Board in July 2008 by David Duffy and will be
presented to members at the AGM in October 2008.
Sponsorship
TPLMC is again very appreciative of our sponsors commitment to the Co-op over the past year.
GK & LH Rohr and Pfizer have again combined to provide our annual prize of $1000 worth of
outdoor furniture with their (Pfizer) Glanvac 6 in 1 competition which is drawn in December each
year. Members need to save the batch number end off their packs and give or send to BBS office by
the December meeting to be in the draw.
Our Newsletters were sponsored by Merial (makers of Triton, Optamax and Ivomec) and Fort Dodge
(makers of Cydectin, Eweguard and Weanerguard).
Newsletters
Topics covered in the past twelve months included Care of Ewes and Lambs in changing feed
conditions; Managing the transition from grain to green; Ram selection and management; Short
matings work well in dry times; Meat Standards Australia – sheepmeat program; as well as
information on the dangers and prevention of cheesy gland, and tapeworms “ovis” and “hydatid”.
