WHAT IS SUCCESS?
No matter your definition of success whether it is solid preparation for higher level math, getting credit
for graduation or simply pleasing your folks, I will consider this year a success if we can surpass those
expectations and open your mind to the realm of mathematical thinking and all the benefits it can offer.
#1 – KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT
Course Description: This course is designed for college-bound students who have successfully completed
Algebra I, Geometry & Algebra II (recommended 80% grade or above). We will cover advanced
Algebra, Trigonometry & introduce some Calculus topics. A student who masters this course will be
prepared to take Calculus or other advanced math classes. A successful student will be highly self-
motivated, willing to seek help when needed and utilize the textbook to reinforce concepts discussed in
class.
#2 – GIVE YOUR BEST EFFORT- EVERY DAY!
Come prepared! Bring to class:
Textbook: PreCalculus with Limits 5th Edition
Completed Assignments
1” Math Binder
Sharpened Pencils
Loose-Leaf Paper (no spiral fringe preferred)
Graphing Calculator – Recommended: TI-Nspire (non CAS) or TI-84
(Unfortunately, class set may not be checked out for use at home.)
Extra batteries (4-AAA) for calculator
A Positive Attitude!
#3 – STAY ORGANIZED
Maintain a 1”, 3-ring math binder with the following 4 tabs:
1. Class Notes
2. Homework
3. Quizzes
4. Tests
Keeping your work organized is a great way to be prepared for weekly homework quizzes and to have
material to study for chapter tests, 9 week replacement tests and final exams.
Use proper headings on EVERY assignment:
First and Last Name
Class Hour
Assignment: Section, Page Number & Problems Assigned
Identifying your work is important in giving you the credit you deserve!
#4 – REMEMBER: GRADES AREN’T EVERYTHING, BUT THEY ARE IMPORTANT
Final grades will be determined by the following:
10% Final Exam
90% Class work:
Tests 100 points, Quizzes 50 points, Homework Quizzes 25 points, Semester Project 50 points
Extra Credit: Points can be earned for unredeemed hall passes up to 10 points per semester. Also,
bonus points for test/quiz corrections and other opportunities may arise.
Replacement Tests: At the end of each 9 weeks grading period, a cumulative review test will be given
that can be used to replace the lowest test score for that 9 week period.
Drop Lowest Quiz Grade: At the end of each semester, a student is allowed to drop his/her lowest
quiz grade (not including homework quizzes).
Homework:
Homework will be given on a daily basis except on quiz/test days. Staying current on homework
assignments is KEY to success in this course. Homework Quizzes will be given after every 5-6
assignments. Each HQ has 5 problems found in the assignments. If you have completed all your
homework, checked answers in the book and asked questions in class, you should get a 100%! You may
use your homework papers and notes but may not use the textbook when completing the quiz. You
must always SHOW WORK to get credit on the quiz.
Lucky Five:
You will have one night to complete a given assignment with a second day to ask questions in class. On
the third day, I will have a “Lucky Five” drawing. Five students will be randomly selected to turn in their
assignment. It will be graded for accuracy and completeness. This grade will replace one of the
questions on your homework quiz. Lucky Five assignments cannot be turned in late. If you are absent
the prior two days before the drawing, another name will be drawn.
Late Work Policy:
If you miss class for any reason, you are required to makeup the work within the policies set forth in the
student handbook. Quizzes or tests are to be made up the day of your return to class following an
absence. All students present on the day of a quiz or test will take the quiz/test unless
absent 2 or more days immediately prior to the quiz/test day. Testing dates are posted weeks in
advance. Makeup quizzes & tests will be different and more difficult in form. Students are encouraged to
take quizzes or tests early if they know in advance that they will be gone.
Feel free to visit:
Mornings from 7:45-8:10 (or earlier with prior notice)
Afternoons until 3:40 (Tuesday I have duty from 3:20-3:30)
Math Lab: Tues-Thurs 7:00-8:00 AM and Mon-Thurs. 3:30-5:00 PM (check for time changes)
Stay Accountable:
Parents can access grades from www.unionps.org through Parent Online once they complete the
registration process and submit an authorization form to the school office. I am very consistent at
posting grades within 24 hours of taking a test/quiz.
