Cause
Bacterium
 Chlamydia
 trachomatis,
 which produces
 inflammation of
 the reproductive
 system.
Most common
 STD in the US
Transmission

Intimate sexual
 contact with an
 infected partner
Oral Contact with
 an infected
 person
Symptoms: Males
¼ of males have no symptoms
Can multiply even if no symptoms
Painful urination, discharge from
 the penis, inflammation of the
 urethra, and pain or swelling in
 the scrotum.
Symptoms appear in 1-3 weeks
Symptoms: Females

1/2 of females have no symptoms
May not have any symptoms until
 complications develop
Inflammation of vagina and
 cervix, burning sensation during
 urination, and unusual discharge
Treatment
Antibiotics
Must take all
 antibiotics even if
 symptoms are
 gone
All sex partners
 should also be
 checked
Complications
 Pelvic Inflammatory Disease(PID)
 Serious infection of the internal female
  reproductive organs.
 Can cause scarring of fallopian tubes which can
  block tubes and cause sterilization
 Ectopic Pregnancy (Tubal Pregnancy)
 Occurs when a fertilized egg implants in a
  fallopian tube instead of the uterus
 Results in death of the fetus and can be fatal to
  the pregnant female
