Position: Dean of Students
Qualifications:
The preferred minimum employment qualifications of the Dean of Students shall include
1. Master's degree in counseling, educational administration, higher education administration, student services, or
related field. Doctorate preferred
2. At least five years of administrative or supervisory experience.
3. Knowledge and experience in academic, career, and personal counseling methods and practices.
4. Knowledge and experience in federal and state financial aid programs including, as a minimum, Pell Grant,
College Work Study (CWS), and Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants (SEOG).
5. Proficiency in communications skills.
6. Ability to work well with others and to work under pressure.
Position Summary:
The Dean of Students is responsible for the overall management, organization, and implementation of all student
personnel services, including but not limited to counseling, job placement, student activities, student financial aid
programs, special services for disadvantaged and disabled students, admissions, and student records. Additionally, the
Dean of Students is responsible for all enrollment management functions including both student recruitment and student
retention activities. The Dean of Students supervises the orientation and assessment of new students and develops and
recommends the overall unit budget. The Dean of Students supervises and monitors the College’s student financial aid
programs in accordance with all pertinent policies, rules, regulations, and laws.
Additionally, the Dean of Students is responsible for the coordination and management of all athletic and sports events
under the auspices of the College.
Duties:
As a minimum, the essential functions shall include:
1. Duties associated with Dean of Students:
a) Planning, organizing, and administering a comprehensive program of student services.
b) Defining and delegating the responsibilities of all student development staff to include: admissions, financial
aid, records management, student activities, orientation, and athletics.
c) Supervising the administration of various assessment instruments to assist in student placement activities and
identification of student learning styles. This responsibility includes ensuring that all assessment instruments
are maintained and administered in a manner and an environment conducive to the assessment process. Also,
ensuring that the maintenance and administration of said instruments are conducted according to the instructions
and practices recommended by the respective assessment instrument and materials manufacturers.
d) Supervising the planning and administration of the new student (first-time freshman) orientation program.
e) Providing orientation information to all faculty concerning faculty advisement of students.
f) Assuring the development of a counseling program which includes vocational, academic, and where
appropriate, personal counseling in cooperation with the College's Advisement System.
g) Supervising the Student Activities Coordinator/Recruiter with extra-class activities which, as a minimum,
include recruitment, publications, organizations, social events, and intramural sports.
h) Working with club and activity sponsors and approving all student activities. Recommending club and activity
sponsors.
i) Cooperating with the administration, faculty, and students in the formulation and implementation of policies
related to student conduct. This includes the review of all student discipline problems on the campuses and
centers.
j) Maintaining adequate and properly maintained first aid stations at all campuses and centers.
k) Preparing and submitting to the Vice President(s) budgets concerning student affairs and supervising the
administration of approved budgets.
l) Collecting data and preparing studies on the student body and communicating the results periodically to the
faculty and administration. Compiling annual Fact Book.
m) Assuring that follow-up studies on all former students be conducted.
n) Cooperating with the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs in the completion of all statistical reports
required by state and federal agencies or requested by local and national organizations and making any other
studies and reports as may be requested by the President.
o) Providing in-service training for the student services personnel.
p) Cooperating in the annual review and revision of the student development and student development services
section of the College's catalog and related publications.
q) Evaluating all phases of the student development services and making appropriate recommendations to the Vice
President for Academic and Student Affairs for increased effectiveness.
r) Working with College staff on job placement efforts.
s) Serving as advisor to the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs concerning student life, including
information related to trends in student life services.
t) Serving on selected College committees as directed by the President.
u) Recommending student members to the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs for appointment to
selected College committees.
v) Assisting with the development, implementation, and updating of a comprehensive marketing plan.
w) Assisting in the registration process.
x) Attending selected professional meetings designed to reflect changing policies and guidelines in administering
programs.
y) Assisting in recruitment and retention of students.
z) Supervising the Scholarship process.
2. Working closely with the College administration on the development of annual budgets for approval by the
President.
Salary: Salary level is based on Alabama Community College System, Schedule B and the level of education and
experience.
