Nash came to MHC from UNC Asheville where he served on the
Bulldogs staff for seven seasons, the final four as the Associate Head
Coach. He was an intricate part of UNC Asheville’s success from
2001-2008. During Nash’s time at UNCA, the men’s basketball team
made the school’s first NCAA appearance in 2003. The 2007-08 sea-
son consisted of UNCA setting a record for wins at 23 and an invitation
to participate in the NIT tournament, as the first Big South team to be
invited to the prestigious post-season tournament. UNCA was twice
named Big South Conference Regular Season Champions during Nash’s time with the Bulldogs, and won a Big
South Tournament Championship.
Prior to his stint at UNC Asheville, Nash had a
successful five-year run as the Head Coach at Carolina
Day School. He guided the school to back-to-back
North Carolina Independent School Athletic Associa-
tion State Championships in 2000 and 2001. These are
the first men’s basketball State Titles in Carolina Day
School’s history. In the 2000-01 season, his Carolina
Day team was ranked as the top basketball team in
Western North Carolina by the Asheville Citizen Times
at the end of the season. Nash was named the WNC
Coach of the Year by the Citizen-Times for the 1999-
2000 season. He led the school to the state’s Final
Four in 1999 and had them in the final 16 in 1997 and
1998.
The Asheville native received his Bachelor of
Arts from Vanderbilt University in 1995 and went on
to earn his Masters in Sport Management from the
United States Sports Academy.

for the first time since the 2001-02 season. Mars Hill was also one of the top offensive

great decisions with the ball in his hand.
Danny Sanders will play both shooting guard and forward. Last year, Sanders ranked second in the
conference in steals (3.04 spg), fourth in made three-point field goals (2.25 per game), seventh in scoring (16.8

rebounds (6.1 rpg) and 12th in defensive rebounds (3.86 per game).
Austin Patton joins the squad after a great high school career and plays off the ball very well. Britton
Smith has been moved from forward to wing because of his athletic ability and his knack to get to the basket.
Antonio Lyerly will join the basketball team after playing for the Mars Hill football team for four seasons. Cody
King is a shooting specialist that can bury three pointers from all over the court. Julian Mack can play the wing
and the small forward position. He has worked on his ball handling and shooting during the offseason. He can

the basket because of his low center of gravity and strength.
After sitting out last season, Robin McElroy will contribute key
minutes for the team and is very good around the basket. He
has great hands and can score around the basket. McElroy’s shot
blocking threat will make opponents alter their shot in the paint.
Pete Kostic is an extremely strong power forward. He is a force
in both positions on the block that can also shoot the long range
shot. He enjoys the battle for position and possession of the ball
in the paint. Dion Malachi is a long athlete that can block shots
and can put up big numbers on both ends of the floor.
Coach Nash feels this year’s squad should be competi-
tive in their non-conference schedule as well as during the SAC
regular season. A key to being successful will be the Lion’s ability
to gel as an offensive and defensive unit. Rebounding the ball on
both ends as well as taking better shots have been areas of con-
centration during the preseason. Coach Nash’s focus is on getting
better each day with this young Lion squad and through desire,
hard work and execution obtain a competitive spirit.

   MARS HILL COLLEGE
                                                             The Mars Hill Experience
Since 1856, students at Mars Hill College have looked at life from a slightly different perspective. That’s because Mars Hill is a
different college.
As a small, private, liberal arts institution in the mountains of North Carolina, Mars Hill offers a unique educational experience.
Mars Hill has a disciplined and rigorous academic program built on a foundation of applied Christian values.
You will learn and live in the secure, nurturing environment, and yet be free to explore a world of options and ideas. You will
grow to understand yourself, even as you become sensitive to your obligations to others and to society.
Your four years at Mars Hill College will do more than prepare you for a career. Mars Hill College will prepare you for a satis-
fying journey through life.

                                                            The Mars Hill Locale
Located in the town of Mars Hill, North Carolina, less than 20 minutes from Asheville, Mars Hill College offers students the
benefits of small town living, as well as the diverse social, cultural and recreational advantages of a progressive urban area.
The Mars Hill campus is spread over 180 acres in addition to a 1000-acre farm, both of which are set against the backdrop of
the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains. These beautiful surroundings provide a comfortable, secure environment for all types of student
activities from hiking and biking with friends to spending an afternoon alone, reading on a hillside.
On campus you will find facilities for a range of indoor and outdoor recreation, including swimming, basketball, tennis, racquet-
ball, hiking, soccer, softball, and baseball.
Within minutes of Mars Hill, you can
experience all the flavor and variety of the Ap-
palachian region. From folk artists whose crafts
and techniques have been handed down through
generations, to contemporary writers, sculptors,
potters, and painters, the mountains offer an array
of cultural diversity. Students often plan outings to
area attractions such as the Asheville Civic Cen-
ter, which hosts a variety of concerts, plays and
entertainment; Biltmore House, built by industrialist
George Vanderbilt, is the largest private home in the
United States; and the Botanical Gardens, featuring
10 acres of native plants and wildflowers.
The area surrounding Mars Hill also
provides opportunities for almost every kind of
recreation imaginable. You can spend an afternoon
driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway, a 470-mile
scenic highway, or a weekend camping on Mount
Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi
River.
You may choose to play golf at one of the
many quality courses in the area, plan a white water
rafting trip through the Nantahala Gorge, or hike the
Appalachian Trail. For snow skiing enthusiasts, Wolf Laurel, Sugar Mountain, and Beech Mountain are well within an hour’s drive of
Mars Hill and offer slopes for the beginner and experts alike. At Mars Hill College, there is plenty to do and see year round.

                                                           A Quality, Caring Family
Because the faculty at Mars Hill share a special sense of commitment and “calling” to their teaching profession, you will find
classes academically challenging and professors personally attentive. There are no teaching assistants or graduate assistants in charge of
the classroom, all classes, even freshman and sophomore courses are taught by professors.
Faculty at Mars Hill are dedicated to teaching and advising, and their credentials reflect their academic preparation. Of 85 full-
time faculty members, more than 75 percent have earned the highest degree in their disciplines and many more have been recognized
for outstanding contributions to their professional field. Whether you need a little extra guidance to grasp a complex concept or want
to engage in a more in-depth debate on a thought-provoking topic, your professors are happy to give you the personal attention that you
deserve.
To ensure that each Mars Hill student receives an excellent education that will prepare him or her for the demands of our chang-
ing world, Mars Hill stresses a curriculum of liberal arts courses, supplemented by course work in a chosen academic major. Students at
Mars Hill may earn one of five degrees (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Fine Arts, or Bachelor of
Social Work), and can choose from 31 majors.
Professors are just as accessible outside their classrooms, serving as academic advisors, coaching intramural and club sports, and
sponsoring student organizations. You may find yourself sitting next to one of your professors in the campus dining hall or at a football
game, or vying for a lane in the gymnasium’s indoor swimming pool.
Faculty at Mars Hill are enthusiastic about subjects they teach, and they strive to share their love of learning with each individual
student.
