Class Lab Credit FURNITURE Effective Term – Fall 2002 [2002*02] – SBCC 07/19/02 FUR 101 Furniture Mach Ops Prerequisites: None Corequisites: None 1 15 6 This course covers the machining operations required in manufacturing furniture components from rough mill through the finish machine room. Topics include safety; machine setup and operation, machine maintenance, form building; jig fabrication; and the interpretation of route sheets and shop drawings. Upon completion, students should be able to set up and operate woodworking machinery, interpret shop drawings, fabricate forms for furniture components. This is a certificate-level course. Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 101 Furniture Mach Ops Prerequisites: None Corequisites: None 2 9 5 This course covers furniture manufacturing processes from rough mill through the machine room. Topics include safety; setup, operations, and maintenance of machinery; and form building; jig making; and interpreting shop drawing and route sheets. Upon completion, students should be able to safely operate machinery, do basic setups, and interpret furniture shop drawings and route sheets. This is a certificate-level course. Effective Term – Fall 2002 [2002*03] –SBCC 07/19/02 FUR 102 Furniture Sanding & Assembly Prerequisites: None Corequisites: None 1 15 6 This course covers the sanding and assembly operations used in manufacturing furniture components. Topics include safety, machine set-up and operation, machine maintenance, sandpaper identification and selection, assembly techniques and methodologies, inspection, and white wood repair. Upon completion, students should be able to set up and operate sanding equipment, assemble completed cases, and perform minor white wood repair. This is a certificate-level course. Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 102 Furniture Assembly Prerequisites: None Corequisites: None 2 9 5 This course covers assembly of different kinds of furniture. Emphasis is placed on the use of standard fasteners, clamping techniques, and white-wood sanding. Upon completion, students should be able to assemble various furniture components and sand the completed products. This is a certificate-level course. Topics include safety, finishing materials, finishing steps, spray gun operation, padding and blazing techniques, sealer sanding, laying plastic, inspection, and touch-up repair. Upon completion, students should be able to apply finish materials to furniture cases, inspect, and perform minor repairs. This is a certificate-level course. Topics include finishing materials, steps, and touch-up techniques for finished products. Upon completion, students should be able to apply finish materials to a product using various finishing techniques. This is a certificate-level course. This is a certificate-level course (Furniture Production Worker only). Emphasis is placed on the safe use of clamps, various hand tools, and assembly methods. Upon completion, students should be able to assemble various furniture components and sand the completed product. This is a certificate-level course (Furniture Production Worker only). Topics include woodworking machinery, cutter heads, jigs, fixtures, drill bits, router bits, bandsaw blades, and the processes and applications associated with each. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate understanding of basic machining principles of woodworking equipment from the rough end through the finish machine department. Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 113 Furniture Processes II Prerequisites: FUR 112 Corequisites: FUR 123 2 3 3 This course introduces sanding, gluing, and assembly of furniture parts. Topics include sanding equipment, plywood processing, glue, assembly processes, and wood properties. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the basic sanding and assembly principles required to produce a piece of furniture. Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 117 Furniture Prod Dev I Prerequisites: FUR 113 Corequisites: None 1 2 2 This course covers the development of new furniture products through all phases of design and product engineering. Emphasis is placed on drawer and door construction, turnings, veneering, laminating, frame processing, reference sources, and detail drawings. Upon completion, students should be able to develop plans for the complete product engineering of complex components and their final assembly. Effective Term – Spring 1998 [1998*01] FUR 118 Furniture Prod Dev II Prerequisites: FUR 117 Corequisites: None 2 6 5 This course covers selecting veneer for five-ply panel construction and application, frame and part construction, sanding, assembly, spray techniques and applications, and hardware installation. Emphasis is placed on five-ply construction, frame construction, sanding and assembly, quality inspections/reports, proper color selection, and application of stains and finish materials. Upon completion, students should be able to produce selected design units, including rough mill, five-ply panels, sanding/assembly, final repair/quality, finish application, and unit revision. This course is a unique concentration requirement in the Design and Product Development concentration in the Furniture Production Technology program. Upon completion, students should be able to understand route sheets, proper machine setup and loading, analysis of cut quality, and accuracy of knives and cutters. Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 120 Furniture Production II Prerequisites: FUR 119 Corequisites: None 1 6 4 This course is a continuation of FUR 119 and covers sanding principles, machine setup, assembly procedures, clamp setup, and basic finishing methods. Emphasis is placed on types of sandpaper and grits, types of sanding machines, steps in assembly, and finishing materials and application. Upon completion, students should be able to apply joint construction, select proper material for assembly, and select and apply proper sanding and finish material. Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 122 Furniture Drafting I Prerequisites: None Corequisites: FUR 112 2 4 4 This course introduces drafting techniques used in the furniture industry to accurately produce an item in the plant. Emphasis is placed on print reading, lettering, dimensioning, orthographic projection, auxiliary views, section views, and construction tolerances as they relate to furniture drafting. Upon completion, students should be able to manually draft a chair and a three-drawer chest into three views. Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 123 Furniture Drafting II Prerequisites: FUR 112 and FUR 122 Corequisites: FUR 113 2 4 4 This course introduces the development of bills of materials and route sheets used in the production of furniture. Emphasis is placed on print reading, detail parts drawings, and developing bills of materials and route sheets for furniture items using CAD. Upon completion, students should be able to produce a bill of material and route sheets required to produce an item of furniture using CAD. Common Course Library FUR - 4 July 19, 2002 Class Lab Credit Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 130 Lumber Processes Prerequisites: FUR 113 Corequisites: None 1 2 2 This course introduces the processing of lumber from the yard through the kiln and into the dry storage area prior to machining. Topics include stacking, storing, handling, and grading of lumber with emphasis placed on kiln drying and moisture/defect control. Upon completion, students should be able to use and apply proper techniques and procedures for lumber processing prior to the machining of parts. Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 213 Furniture Cost Analysis Prerequisites: FUR 120 Corequisites: None 3 0 3 This course covers the analysis of costs required to produce an item of furniture. Topics include the costs associated with direct and indirect labor, direct and indirect materials, factory overhead, sales, and administrative and profit/loss analysis. Upon completion, students should be able to calculate the cost of an item of furniture. Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 214 Furn Production Control Prerequisites: FUR 120 Corequisites: None 2 0 2 This course introduces production control as it relates to the furniture industry. Topics include scheduling, MRP, JIT, inventory control, bar coding, software applications, forecasting, and the processes associated with each. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the basic concepts and principles of controlling the production in a furniture manufacturing factory. Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 217 Furn Prod Practicum I Prerequisites: FUR 120 Corequisites: None 1 6 4 This course covers the actual procedures of following route sheets, machine setup in the rough mill area, and scheduling complete machining. Emphasis is placed on understanding drawings, route sheets, rough mill procedures, gluing and finish machine setup, and scheduling for assembly. Upon completion, students should be able to understand all route sheet instructions and phases of rough mill procedures through finish machining into assembly. Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 218 Furniture Plant Layout Prerequisites: DFT 151 and FUR 123 Corequisites: FUR 217 1 2 2 This course introduces the principles and procedures required to lay out a furniture manufacturing facility. Topics include work flow, capacity requirements, material handling, conveyor systems, machines, and the processes and applications associated with each. Upon completion, students should be able to design and lay out a complete furniture manufacturing facility using CAD. Common Course Library FUR - 5 July 19, 2002 Class Lab Credit Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 219 Furn Engineering Sys Prerequisites: FUR 119 and FUR 122 Corequisites: FUR 218 3 0 3 This course covers the engineering systems required for a furniture plant. Topics include electricity, plumbing, electrical motors, compressors, air exhaust and air make-up systems, machinery maintenance, lighting, heating, and air conditioning systems. Upon completion, students should be able to identify and correct problems associated with the plant facilities of a furniture manufacturing operation. Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 221 Furn Prod Practicum II Prerequisites: FUR 217 Corequisites: None 1 6 4 This course, a continuation of FUR 217, covers rough mill and gluing operations, sanding and assembly operations, preparation of finish color panels, and finish applications. Emphasis is placed on completion of machining, boring, sanding, assembly, final repair, color-step panels, and at least a nine-step finish. Upon completion, students should be able to complete a furniture project including inspection for quality in white-wood. Effective Term – Fall 1998 [1998*03] FUR 231 Modeling for Furniture Apps Prerequisites: None Corequisites: None 2 3 3 This course covers the application of solid modeling techniques used to design and produce furniture parts. Emphasis is placed on model generation of parts, subassemblies, final assemblies, route sheet and bills of material development, and other old functions that pertain to the model. Upon completion, students should be able to design, create, and edit furniture items with solid modeling. Effective Term – Fall 2002 [2002*03] – CRC 10/10/01 FUR 232 Modeling for Furn Apps II Prerequisites: FUR 231 Corequisites: None 2 3 3 This course is a continuation of FUR 231. Emphasis is placed on further integration of assemblies, parts, and 2-D draft documentation. Upon completion, students should be able to link variable tables to spread sheet programs, and how to parametrically change their designs. Effective Term – Summer 1997 [1997*02] FUR 260 Interior Plan & Display Prerequisites: DFT 151 and FUR 113 Corequisites: None 1 3 2 This course introduces the basic principles of interior planning and display of furniture showroom displays. Emphasis is placed on floor plans, color analysis, lighting, furniture grouping and placement, and correlation of finish, fabrics, and accessories as related to showroom planning. Upon completion, students should be able to assist in the development of planning all aspects of a furniture display and/or showroom.
