HYPATIA (355? - 415 CE) taught mathematics and natural
philosophy. She is credited with the authorship of three major
treatises on geometry and algebra and one on astronomy.
Marie Curie (1867 – 1934). Physicist and chemist. She was a
pioneer in the field of radioactivity, and the only person
honored with Nobel Prizes in two different sciences, and the
first female professor at the University of Paris. She
discovered and named the elements Radium and Polonium.
Barbara McClintock (1902-1992), the 1983
Nobel Laureate in Physiology of Medicine, was
an American scientist and one of the world's
most distinguished cytogeneticists.
GRACE HOPPER
Mathematician (1906 - 1992). She was the
driver for modern US computer technology and
an admiral in the United States Navy.
Chien Shiung-Wu (1912-1997) was a Chinese-born
American physicist. She worked on the Manhattan
Project, developing a process for separating U235 from
U238. She was also a member of the National Academy
of Sciences (elected 1958).

1957) Helped discover the double helix shape
of DNA
Jane Goodall (1934- ) English UN
Messenger of Peace and
anthropologist. Goodall was
instrumental in the field of
primatology and is known for her
discovery of tool-making among
chimpanzees.
Shirley Ann Jackson (1946-)
is a US physicist. She received
her Ph.D. in physics from the
Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) in 1973, only
the second African-American
woman to do this in the US.
She was also a previous
chairwoman of the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission and is
currently president of RPI.

Amount: up to $1000 per academic year
Who is eligible: Students with a GPA of 3.25 or better, who have taken or are taking Math
124, 125, 115, 116 at the time of application, and will take two of the following (Math
124,125,126,225, 220, 230) during the academic year for which the scholarship is awarded.
Financial need is considered.
Application:
Current HCC transcript (unofffical is acceptable)
Two letters of recommendation, at least one HCC Math faculty
Detailed plan for courses to take indicating Math courses from the Calculus sequence
A personal statement:
• personal history in higher education
• educational goals, including academic major
• why the applicant feels deserving of the scholarship
• financial need, if any
• any special status such as, Running Start student, International student, scholarships,
etc., that could affect financial need
