I also want to wish you and your family a Happy & Prosperous New Year. It‟s hard to believe that 2008 has come and gone. It seems only yesterday we were getting ready for the 2008 Awards Banquet. Now it is time for the 2009 Awards Banquet! Our annual Awards Banquet is on Saturday, January 24 th, at the Biltmore Hotel in Santa Clara (5:30 PM no host cocktails; 6:15 PM dinner). You will want to attend to see who will „win‟ this year‟s Blunderbird award. Please see the enclosed information on the event and sign up no later then January 16 th. I want to thank the 2008 Board for all of their hard work and dedication. The year wouldn‟t have been the same without all of their hard work. I also want to welcome the 2009 Board. They are as follows: President – Joe Ryan Vice President – Dennis Kay Secretary – Don Reisinger Treasurer – Ray Delgado Editor – Marty Gerbasi Parades – Steve Pedone Displays – Monte Roach Activities – Gene Cox Fund Raising – Al Thomas Historian – Kathy Pedone CTCI Rep – Jerry Schwab Logo Sales – Bernie Epolite I want to thank Rich & Marianne Eichenbaum for hosting a great Holiday Party at their home. They did a superb job and everyone had a great time. I also want to thank Don and Kate Hamblin for providing the limousine service. What a wonderful way to arrive at a party! It is now confirmed that we will have a 2-day display at the Flea Market. The dates are April 4 & 5. We will need to supply at least THIRTY 50‟s or 60‟s year cars each day. We will need everyone‟s support to make this happen. As you may have heard, all sports at San Jose high schools may be canceled for the year. If this happens, it will eliminate a good portion of our homecomings and our income. That‟s why it is so important to make the Flea Market a success. Everyone needs to give Geoff Dye a big hand for making the Flea Market happen. Now is also the time to start planning events for 2009. If you want to host an event, contact Gene Cox and he can help you with what is needed. Joe Please note SCVT Membership renewal form on Page XIII - Please remember the dues are now $40.00 per year and due by January 31, 2009! SEE YOU AT THE MEETING, FRIDAY, January 9, 2009! III THE SCVT EARLY BIRD FAN Meeting Minutes – December 2008 There was no meeting in December. Editor’s Message by Marty Gerbasi Hi everyone. It is with pleasure that I accept your nomination as Editor. It was a tough fight and the competition was fierce, but I emerged victorious for this coveted job. Larry and Georgette have done a wonderful job over the past years and I hope that I can maintain the standards that they have set. I will try to make the FAN as interesting as possible, but it is your willingness to host events, participate in events and write articles for this publication that make it what it is. Thanks ahead of time for your help in making this the best T-Bird newsletter on the open market! We have been asked that we have a minimum of 20 - 25 cars and be willing to go down the parade route twice. Parade goes on rain or shine. PAST EVENT REPORTS Senior Bag Stuffing by Jill Schwab On December 4, approximately 20 of our SCVT members gathered at the home of Jill Schwab to stuff bags with goodies for various senior centers. With all the donated toiletries, etc. we were able to make 707 bags. The bags were given to various charities, including Meals-on-Wheels, Catholic Charities Adult Day Care, St. Anthony‟s Dining Hall, and local community centers. (Note: See photo album page XI). V THE SCVT EARLY BIRD FAN San Jose Holiday Parade by Jerry Dance On December 7, 20 SCVT T-Birds paraded through downtown San Jose in the annual San Jose Holiday Parade. Four of our lovely birds carried the Vietnamese Prince and Princesses. The rest of the Birds carried various San Jose dignitaries. (Note: See photo album page XI). Toys for Tots Fly-By by Don Reisinger The weather was great, spirits were high and in a year when donations were expected to be down, SCVT brought in its biggest load of toys ever. On Saturday, December 13th the SCVT Toys for Tots Fly-By came off without a hitch (well almost). Nine beautiful T-Birds and their dedicated owners were out in force to see Christmas happen for some kids who would otherwise do without. With the Marines standing tall in their dress blues the T-Birds and their cargo rolled up and one by one unloaded. After the 9 cars had been emptied, most headed back to Peggy Sue‟s for a quick lunch before getting ready for the Holiday Party. In our 11th year, it was almost perfect. But, there was a surprise in store when we arrived with the van (we bring the toys in the van and transfer them to the T- Birds). Assuming we could assemble in our normal spot on the 4th floor of the parking ramp, the surprise was that the van was too tall to get to the assembly area. But, no problem, across the street was an open lot and everyone eventually made it to the lot to pack up before heading off. Thanks to all the members who gave up some of their time in the holiday season to help out. (Note: See photo album page XII). Christmas Party by Rich and Marianne Eichenbaum The annual SCVT Holiday Party was held at the home of Rich and Marianne Eichenbaums on December 13. It was a festive affair as always and Rich and Marianne again outdid themselves with their generous hospitality. There were 56 members in attendance. Thanks to Don and Kate Hamblin for supplying the limo service (and driver Pierre) from the parking area to the house. Special thanks to the set up people (the Maness‟ and the Dances‟), bartender Bill Croxton and our own Santa, Joe Ryan. As per our tradition, 3 Marines (two of the three young men were Iraq War veterans) where in attendance to gather the donated toys for the Toys-For-Tots program. The excellent meal was catered by “Catering by Five.” (Note: See photo album page XII). VI THE SCVT EARLY BIRD FAN UPCOMING EVENTS Who are the SCVT Members? - Jan 9, 2008 by Larry & Georgette Maness Here are some details for the "GUESS WHO THE SCVT MEMBERS ARE? WIN A PRIZE" contest. (Note: See photo on Page X) If you are interested in participating you will need to either: 1. Email the answers to me at: firstname.lastname@example.org by Thursday January 8 or 2. Bring to the Jan. 9 meeting the contest page with your answers written under the faces in the pictures. Please put your name on the page too.....so I know who is submitting the answers. The person who gets the most correct answers will win the prize. There are 15 pictures in total with 21 people in these pictures. These people are current active members except for one - and this one person is still a member of SCVT, just not active any more....Good luck! Larry & Georgette Annual Awards Banquet - January 24, 2008 by Joe Ryan Our first event of the New Year is the awards banquet and it will be held at the Biltmore Hotel in Santa Clara on Saturday, January 24th. Address: 2151 Laurelwood Rd, Santa Clara, just east of 101 off of San Thomas Expy. The event will start at 5:30 PM for no host cocktails, with dinner at 6:15 PM. You will have a chance at the January meeting to sign up, but I will need a final count and payment by January 16th to let the hotel know. Contact Joe @ 650-344-3038 The meal will consist of their Saratoga Buffet which includes Roast Beef w/Au Jus, Chicken Marsala, fresh garden green salad, fresh fruit salad, garlic herb potato salad, seasonal vegetables, roasted red potatoes, wild rice blend, and a variety of desserts. The cost is $37.50 per person. Please make the check out to SCVT and mail it to my home address (402 Seville Way, San Mateo, CA 94402). If you would like to spend the night, we have been given special rates. The rates are $85 for a Garden Room and $105 for a Tower Suite. The hotel phone number is 408-988- 8411. Let them know it is the special Santa Clara Valley Thunderbird rate. You will not want to miss this annual event. You will want to see who 'wins' the annual Blunderbird award. We have several good candidates this year, with the possibility of someone winning for the second, or third time! AND --- While we are on the subject - VII THE SCVT EARLY BIRD FAN I would like to make the awarding of the Blunderbird more of an interactive event. The President would still have the final vote but I think we would have more fun with some additional participation. Any member may nominate a person for the Blunderbird. You will need to send me a description of the 'blunder' with the details of why you think that person deserves the „award.‟ Then, at the Awards Banquet the nominating person will have a minute or two to tell about the blunder. If you wish to be anonymous I will talk about your nominee without mentioning who supplied the information. The 'nominee' will then have up to 30 seconds to tell why they shouldn't get the award. This should make things very interesting! Please send me (Joe) your 'nominations' by January 4, 2009 either at the address above or email to: email@example.com. Crusin’ Morro Bay Car Show - May 1 - 3, 2009 by Joe & Pat Ryan It's not too late to join us for the Morro Bay car show. We now have 3 rooms left at the Best Western El Rancho. We have a double queen, non-smoking, and 2 single queen smoking rooms. The motel said they would air out the rooms before our arrival. It's a great show and we have always had a great time.
