                              2011 KISD Livestock Show
                                    Species Rules

The Katy ISD Agricultural Science instructors shall be the final authorities of these rules and
regulations and arbitrarily settle and determine all matters, questions, and differences in regard
thereto or otherwise arising out of connection with, or incidental to the show.

    1.       Official selection dates and times will be set by the KISD FFA Livestock Show, and
             students must attend unless pre-approval is granted by the KISD Livestock Show
             Committee.
    2.       All KISD projects will be purchased cooperatively by the KISD FFA Livestock Show.
             Students will be required to pay the non-refundable amounts for animals by
             deadlines set annually by the KISD FFA Livestock Show. The students, accompanied
             by the Ag teachers, shall draw lots to determine the order of selection and
             individually select their choices from a group of animals that will exceed the total
             number of buyers.
    3.       Each year, an exhibitor may purchase two animals (or two lots of animals in the case
             of rabbits and broilers) of one particular species. Only one animal (or pen) can be
             shown by an exhibitor at the KISD FFA Livestock Show each year.
    4.       Any medications administered to animal projects must meet USDA guidelines and
             any surgical alterations must be approved by the supervising Ag Science teacher.
             Failure to receive permission shall result in disqualification from the show.
    5.       All care of the projects, both prior to and during the livestock show, must be
             approved by the appropriate AST.
    6.       Classes will be broken at the show as needed by the show management.
    7.       There are no minimum or maximum weight limits in any species.
    8.       Only academically eligible students may bring projects to the KISD Livestock Show.
             These projects must have current KISD FFA Livestock Show identification to be
             exhibited.
    9.       Any market project exhibited at the KISD FFA Livestock Show and not sold
             in the premium sale or the barn sale will be sent to a livestock market
             facility and the exhibitor will receive current market price.
    10.      Prospective exhibitors must meet the following financial responsibilities:

                 All Exhibitors:          $25 Non-refundable entry fee due by 9/17/10
                 Steers:                  $1200 per animal submitted by 5/4/10
                 Lambs, Goats:            $200 per animal submitted by 9/17/10
                 Hogs:                    $200 per animal submitted by 9/17/10
                 Rabbits:                 $175 per box of 5 submitted by 9/17/10
                 Broilers:                $1.50 per bird (25 minimum) submitted 9/17/10

          *No exhibitor may exhibit a project unless he/she adheres to these deadlines.

Market Lambs

    1.       Lambs will be slick shorn.
    2.       Ewes or wethers may be shown.
    3.       The use of a hot shot or any electric prod is prohibited at the Livestock Show.

Market Hogs

   1.      Open gilts or barrows may be shown.

Market Steers

   1.      The Katy ISD FFA Progress Show will be a Blow and Go Show for steers.
   2.      Steers will be slick shorn for the KISD FFA Livestock Show not to exceed ¼” of hair
           on any part of their body excluding the tail switch. Only 30 minutes will be given for
           students to correct the shear rule.

Market Goats

   1.      Goats must be exhibited with only a collar or chain. No harnesses or halters are
           allowed.
   2.      Goats are to be summer clipped from the knee and hock up, not to exceed 3/8” of
           hair on any part of their body excluding the tail. Only 30 minutes will be given for
           students to correct the shear rule.
   3.      Goats should be dehorned prior to the show, with any tipped horns not being smaller
           than a dime in circumference.

Broilers

   1.      Broilers will be shown in a pen of three.
   2.      Broilers will be purchased in lots of 25. Each exhibitor may purchase up to two lots
           of 25, or 50 birds.
   3.      Broilers will be wing banded upon delivery, and those that show at the KISD FFA
           Livestock Show must have the appropriate band present on the bird.
   4.      Only the top two pens of broilers will remain at the show after judging occurs.
   5.      All broilers will be processed during the show, and the exhibitor is responsible for
           delivering the processed birds to the buyer within two weeks after the show. A $25
           per day late fee will be accessed for not delivering the birds within the two week
           window.

Rabbits

   1.      Rabbits will show in pens of three at the KISD FFA Livestock Show.
   2.      Bunnies will be purchased by KISD in meat pens of five. Each exhibitor can purchase
           up to two pens.
   3.      Bunnies will be tattooed before distribution to exhibitors. Only those bunnies having
           the required tattoos will be allowed to show.
   4.      Only the top two pens of bunnies will remain at the show after judging occurs.
   5.      Exhibitors must bring feed and water containers to the show for their pens.
   6.      If bunnies are processed, the exhibitor is responsible for delivering the processed
           rabbits to the buyer within two weeks after the show. A $25 per day late fee will be
           assessed for not delivering the rabbits within the two week window.
