Prescription for neurosism
Composition: Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Shenmen (HT 7), Zusanli (ST 36), Xinshu (BL 15),
Pishu (BL 20), Anmian point.
Source: Therapeutics of Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion compiled by Qiu
Maoliang.
Action: Invigorating the heart and spleen as well as relieving mental stress.
Elucidation: Neurosism falls into the category of "insomnia", "palpitation", or
"amnesia" in TCM. The occurrence of the disease is mainly due to asthenia of qi and
blood leading to failure of nourishing the heart spirit which results from anxiety
impairing the heart and overstrain or overleisure exhausting the heart and spleen.
Sanyinjiao (SP 6), the convergent acupoint of the foot triple-yin meridians, is
upper-lower coordinated with Shenmen (HT 7), the Yuan-Source point of the heart
meridian, to invigorate the heart and spleen as well as to relieve mental stress. Zusanli
(ST 36) can be needled to regulate the spleen and stomach, to benefit qi and to
nourish blood so as to keep persons' fit and strong. Xinshu (BL 15) and Pishu (BL 20)
can produce the coordinated effect of invigorating the heart and spleen with
Sanyinjiao (SP 6) and Shenmen (HT 7). Anmian point, which is located at the middle
of Fengchi (GB 20) and Yiming (EX- HN 14), an extra point, can be needled to
tranquilize and to allay excitement. All the points can produce the effect of
invigorating the heart and spleen as well as relieving mental stress.
Indication: Neurosism differentiated as the type of asthenia of both the heart and
spleen. The main manifestation is insomnia. Difficulty in falling asleep, or inability of
sleeping soundly, sometimes being asleep and sometimes being awake, incapability of
falling asleep again after waking up if the disease is slight; lying awake all night if it
is severe. Accompanied by palpitation, amnesia, distaste for food, or flatulence,
loose stool, lassitude, sallow and unlustrous complexion. Pink tongue with thin
and whitish fur, small and weak pulse.
Performance: Sanyinjiao (SP 6) is needled vertically 1 cun with the reinforcing
method achieved by lifting-inserting and swirling-rotating manipulated on the needle.
Shenmen (HT 7) is needled vertically 0.3 - 0.5 cun with the reinforcing method
achieved by swirling-rotating manipulated on the needle.
Zusanli (ST 36) is needled vertically 1.5 cun with the reinforcing method achieved by
lifting-inserting and swirling-rotating manipulated on the needle.
Xinshu (BL 15) and Pishu (BL 20) are needled obliquely 0.5 - 1 cun toward the spinal
column with the reinforcing method achieved by lifting-inserting and

swirling-rotating manipulated on the needles. After needling, mild moxibustion with
moxa sticks is applied on the acupoints for 10 minutes.
Anmian point is needled vertically 1 cun with the reinforcing method achieved by
swirling-rotating manipulated on the needle.
The above acupoints can be divided into two groups, and the two groups can be
selected alternately. The treatment is given once a day. The needles are retained for 30
minutes. Ten days make up one course.
Clinical material: Lin et al reported the treatment of 32 cases of severe neurosism
with acumox. The principal acupoints: Xinshu (BL 15), Neiguan (PC 6), Shenmen
(HT 7), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Baihui (GV 20), Guanyuan (CV 4), Zusanli (ST 36). The
auxiliary acupoints: Pishu (BL 20), Yinlingquan (SP 9) if differentiated as asthenia of
both the heart and spleen; Shenshu (BL 23), Taixi (KI 3) if differentiated as asthenia
of kidney essence; Ganshu (BL 18), Taichong (LR 3) if differentiated as hyperactivity
of liver-yang. Select 5 principal acupoints and 1 auxiliary acupoint each time. After
the acuesthesia was felt, manipulate the needles with the mild reinforcing-reducing
method if differentiated as hyperactivity of liver-yang, while manipulate heavily the
needles with the heat inducing technique. Retain the needles for 1 hour during which
the needles were manipulated 3 times. Mildly moxibust Baihui (GV 20) and
Guanyuan (CV 4) respectively for 30 minutes each with moxa sticks. Apply warm
needling on Zusanli (ST 36). Give the treatment once a day, and 10 days made up one
course. Result: 23 were cured (71.9 % ), 7 were significantly effective (21.9 % ), and
2 were improved (6.2 % ). The effective rate was 100%. [China Journal of Acumox,
1994, (5): 14]
Yu reported the treatment of 62 cases of insomnia with acupuncture. The principal
acupoints selected were Baihui (GV 20), Daling (PC 7), Sanyinjiao (SP 6); the
auxiliary ones were Back-Shu points, Yuan-Source points and He-Sea points. The
patient being in supine position, needle Baihui (GV 20), Daling (PC 7 ) and
Sanyinjiao (SP 6) first, then the Source-Yuan and He-Sea points selected according to
the patient's conditions. Retain the needles for 20 - 30 minutes during which the
needles were swirled-rotated and lifted-inserted once. Mter speeding up the
generation of qi and withdrawing the needles, ask the patient to be in sitting position,
puncture the Back-Shu points without retaining the needles. Twelve times of
treatment made up one course. The interval between two courses was one day. Result:
34 were cured, 13 were significantly effective, 11 were improved, and 4 ineffective.
The total effective rate was 93. 5%. [ ShanghaiJournal of Acgmox, 1991, 10(1): 22]
Xue adopted acupuncture to treat 30 cases of neurosism. Eighteen were differentiated
as asthenia of both the heart and spleen, and 12 were differentiated as imbalance
between the heart and kidney. Acupoints selected: ① Baihui (GV 20), Sishencong
(EX- HN 1) points, Zusanli (ST 36), Sanyinjiao (SP 6) ; ② Shenmen (HT 7),

Neiguan ( PC 6 ), Fengchi ( GB 20 ), Yintang (EX-HN 3), Anmian point. Add
Taixi (KI 3) if differentiated as imbalance between the heart and kidney. Manipulate
the needles with the reinforcing technique. Give puncturing 15 times a day. Needling
all the above acupoints meant one course of treatment. The interval between two
courses was 15 days. Result: 27 were cured, 3 were improved. All were effecti ve.
[ Xinfiang Journal of TCMand Pharmacology, 1988, (2) : 44]
Typical case 1 : A female student of 19. The patient had suffered from slight
neurosism for over six months. Recently, because of excessive brain-work, she was
aware of dizziness, insomnia, dreaminess, failing of memory. And she could not
insist on daily studying, then was constrained to leave off her study. After several days
of treatment with Western medicine did not show any effect, she came to Acumox
Department to seek medical help. Through comprehensively analyzing pulse
condition and other manifestations, the diagnosis was severe neurosism differentiated
as asthenia of both the heart and spleen. Xinshu ( BL 15 ), Neiguan ( PC 6 ), Shenmen
(HT 7), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Zusanli (ST 36), Pishu (BL 20) etc. were selected and
manipulated with the reinforcing method achieved by heat inducing technique. The
needles were retained for 1 hour. Baihui (GV 20) and Guanyuan (CV 4) were mildly
moxibusted for 30 minutes with moxa sticks. After the first time of treatment, she was
aware that the symptoms were alleviated evidently; after 6 times of treatment,
memory mainly recovered and other symptoms lessened significantly. After 2 courses
of treatment, memory returned to normal and other symptoms were eliminated. [Lin
Xianjun, China Journal of Acumox, 1994, (5): 14]
Typical case 2: A male of 54. The patient had suffered from difficulty in falling
asleep for over 1 year, accompanied by amnesia, dizziness, lassitude, poor appetite,
pink tongue with yellowish and greasy coating, stringy and slippery right-guan pulse,
soft and weak left pulse. The principles should be invigorating spleen to eliminate
dampness, alleviating mental depression and activating spleen-qi. Therapeutic method.
Zusanli (ST 36), Fenglong ( ST 40 ), Neiguan ( PC 6 ), Yintang (EX-HN 3),
Fengchi (GB 20) were manipulated with the reducing technique; Taibai (SP 3),
Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Shenmen (HT 7) were manipulated with the reinforcing technique;
and Shenmen (HT 7), Spleen, Subcortex point of the auriculo-acupuncture points
were tapped with small granular drugs with 3 times of pressing a day by the patient
himself. After 12 times of treatment, the patient could sleep for 7 - 8 hours. [Qin
Liangfu, Shanghai Journal of Acumox, 1990, 9 (2). 11]
