General information

The Department of Philosophy and Social Studies is part of the School of
Philosophy, located in Gallos’ campus, at the outskirts of the city of Rethymno.
Founded in 1977, today it numbers 25 faculty members. It has about 000
undergraduate and 000 postgraduate students. It consists of two Divisions: (a)
Philosophy; (b) Theory and Methodology of the Social Sciences. The curriculum
includes courses in philosophy, psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology and
education. The above disciplines are studied from an integrative perspective. At
the end of their second year of study, students choose their major area of
specialization (Philosophy or Theory and Methodology of the Social Sciences).
The Department offers/awards a B.A. Degree in Philosophy and Social Studies.
The B.A. programme aims to cultivate the values of theoretical and applied
knowledge, as well as scholarly research as part of the professional profile of its
graduates. It offers a variety of courses related to its two major areas of
specialization plus practical teacher training for those who wish to pursue a
teaching career in Secondary Education.

Access to further studies

The Department offers the following postgraduate degrees:

M.A. degrees in:
   Philosophy
   Bioethics
   Culture and Human Development
 Educational Theory, History and Policy

Ph.D degrees in Philosophy, Bioethics, Psychology, Sociology, Cultural
Anthropology and Education.

Structure of studies

Students are awarded a BA in Philosophy and Social Studies after being
successfully examined in fifty-two (52) courses, which are distributed into eight (8)
academic semesters. There is an option of writing a thesis during the fourth year
of study; in this case the total number of courses required for the degree is
reduced to forty-nine (49), since the thesis credits are equivalent to the credits of
three (3) courses.

                                                                                      1
Students should register for seven (7) courses per term, in the first four terms of
their studies and for six (6) courses per term in the last four terms. Each course is
taught for three (3) hours per week and it lasts one semester. Each semester
consists of fifteen (15) educational weeks, comprised of thirteen (13) weeks of
instruction and two (2) weeks of examinations.

Courses fall under three different categories: a. lectures, which aim to acquaint
students with a wide subject area; b. seminars, which aim to introduce the
students to basic research skills, demanding written assignments and encouraging
participation in class discussion; c. reading classes (applies only to courses
offered by the Division of Philosophy), which aim to expose students to the
problems of philosophical text interpretation.

Each course of the above corresponds to 5 ECTS credits

During the first two years of study, students have the following compulsory
courses:

Introduction to Philosophy
Philosophy of Science
Logic
Moral Philosophy
Social and Political Philosophy
Ancient Philosophy
Modern Philosophy
Social Theory
Introduction to Sociology
History and Philosophy of the Social Sciences
Sociology of Education
Introduction to Psychology I and II
General Didactics

In order to broaden their areas of competence, students are also required to
register for 000 courses offered by the Department of Philology and the
Department of History and Archaeology.

Basic specialization starts in fifth semester, when, in addition to the basic
compulsory courses, students are required to register for eighteen (18) optional
courses in Philosophy or in the Theory and Methodology of the Social Sciences,
depending on the area of specialization that they have chosen. Students can also
attend optional courses from other Departments of the University.

                                                                                    2
Students’ Assessment

The grading system uses a scale of whole numbers ranging from one (1) to ten
(10). The minimum pass grade is five (5). Any grade below that constitutes a
failure. The final grade point average (GPA) is the total of grades divided by the
number of courses. A degree grade of 8.50 to 10 is considered <<excellent>>,
from 6.50 to 8.50 is considered <<very good>> and from 5 to 6.50 is considered
<<average to fair>>.

The student’s performance in each course is assessed on the basis of:

   i. written and/or oral examinations at the end of each term (for lectures and
          reading classes)

   or

ii. the quality of the student’s essay on a subject assigned by the instructor as
well as the student’s contribution in class discussion (for seminars and
           reading classes)

   or

iii. by a combination of the student’s performance in the examinations and in
the term papers submitted during or near the end of the term (for
           lectures and reading classes).
The final examination period lasts two weeks and takes place at the end of each
semester. A student who fails a course once, has the right to re-sit examinations
the following September. A second failure constitutes a final failure in the course.
However, the student may re-enroll for failed courses, both compulsory and
optional.

The assessment of Erasmus students as well as other guest students can be
based on written examinations and/or one or more essays in English or
another main European language (French, German). The exact details of
the assessment procedures have to be agreed with the instructor.

                                                                                  3
