Healthy Oakland Field Program Intern Location: 2580 San Pablo Avenue City: Oakland Public Transportation Access: West Oakland BART Organization Mission: Our mission is to decrease violence and health disparities in primarily the African American community but also in other ethnic communities as well. This is accomplished by collaborating with other community conscious organizations churches businesses and individuals. Position Description: URBAN HEALTH POWER: Healthy Oakland has expanded its medical clinic and social services to target low income uninsured west oakland residents particulary males between 15-60 to include the new Urban Male Health Center. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: November / December 2007-Intern(s) are needed to do doorto-door survey uninsured West Oakland households. The secondary goal is to leave educational information and/or educate residents to receive free health related services at Healthy Oakland. Intern would work to collect and analyze neighborhood data working in conjunction with Alameda County Public Health Department/ City of Oakland Neighborhood Services Representatives/ Service Employees International Union and other community partners will support in the outreach. Intern would create database of incoming data to support marketing collateral and message development. Month of January 2008 - Help to devise questionnaire and support organizing uninsured male focus groups to ascertain needs for potential behavorial health programming at Healthy Oakland. Month of February 2008 - Help to devise town hall meeting forum agenda and powerpoint presentation of research finding for community stakeholders. Research west Oakland community stakeholders to build outreach database. Create and/or work with graphic artist to devise forum flyer for mailing and electronic distribution. Distribute flyer electronic and direct mail as well as poster at key community venues. Collect RSVP's for town hall forum. Call key community elected officials and organization to verify attendance. Position Description: The Youth Suitcase Clinic has served Berkeley's homeless youth (ages 12-24) for 7 years. Coordinate with local youth orgainz Category: Health and Nutrition Alcohol Policy Network/ Students for a Safer Southside Students for a Safer Southside (SFSS) Intern Location: 3101 Telegraph Ave. City: Berkeley Public Transportation Access: Ashby Station/ 4No Bus **please note that our office will be in temporary transition to a new location- TBD Oct. 2NoNo7** Organization Mission: Provide information/ consultation/ media advocacy and other services to individuals/ organizations/ community groups/ and governmental entities which help reduce the environmental risk of alcohol and other drug problems. Position Description: Program Mission: The Alcohol Policy Network (APN) and their UC Berkeley student group Students for a Safer Southside (SFSS) will utilize the SAMHSA model program Community Trials Intervention for High-Risk Drinking in an effort to reduce high-risk drinking behaviors by at least 5% among students who live work or otherwise frequent the south-campus area of the UC Berkeley. APN using a student-led approach with Students for a Safer Southside will emphasize environmental prevention strategies in their project to reduce high risk drinking among UC Berkeley students in the south-campus area. SFSS will collaborate with and mobilize other stakeholders including representatives of the university/ the city/ neighborhood residents and law enforcement to: 1) reduce alcohol availability; 2) reduce sales of alcohol to minors; 3) increase accountability of social hosts regarding underage drinking; and 4) and increase the training and accountability of alcohol retailers regarding underage and other high risk drinking. They will conduct peer to peer research of college community environmental AOD risk factors; assist in the implementation of municipal policy; educate students and businesses regarding new policies; and assist with the evaluation of policy efficacy. SFSS is a group of approximately 15 undergraduate students at UC Berkeley. Population Served: UC Berkeley students; alcohol retailers in Berkeley; South Berkeley residents & south-campus residents. Schedule: Interns will be expected to attend (mandatory) regular weekly meetings for SFSS which are organized around student schedules. Interns will also be expected to hold regular office hours around their academic schedules which will fluctuate based on their weekly intern workload and projects (i.e. students attending multiple policy meetings in a week will not be expected to hold additional office hours). Skills/Qualities: Someone interested in community-level alcohol/substance abuse issues would be an ideal candidate. Short of that specific interest someone with a general interest in public health policy and who has a dedication to serving their local community. We need students who like to work with their peers (including sharing a workspace with high school students from Oakland) and who is unafraid to speak up and share their ideas and opinions. Students with a background in sociology/ advertising/ public health/ mass communications/ public policy/ graphic design/ html or statistics (SPSS) would add to our project. Most of all we would like someone with an interest in nonprofit work and who recognizes the importance in reducing student binge drinking. Women's Cancer Resource Center Community Outreach Assistant Location: 5741 Telegraph Avenue City: Oakland Public Transportation Access: 4No Organization Mission: To empower women with cancer to be active and informed consumers and survivors; to provide community for women with cancer and their supporters; to educate the general community about cancer; and to be actively involved in the struggle for a life-affirming cancer-free society. Position Description: The Women's Cancer Resource Center (WCRC) has been providing a spectrum of free services to women with cancer since 1986. Within the Community Outreach Program works to ensure that clients in underserved communities are aware of the programs that WCRC offers. The Community Outreach Assistant works with the Community Outreach Manager (C.O.M.) to carry out varied and important duties within the areas of outreach and marketing of WCRC. The population served would be our client base - the majority of whom are low-income women and/or women of color. Activities would include working on an outreach plan for target communities African American/ Latino/ LGBT etc. and working to develop or further WCRC's relationship with other organizations serving those communities. Other activities would be going out to health fairs and other events within these communities to represent WCRC. Other assignments would involve events targeted to the communities. Schedule: The hours are flexible - the majority of the time would be in the 9-5 TuesdayFriday time frame. Some time on weekends or evenings will be needed to attend health fairs and other events as needed. Skills/Qualities: The person should be able to quickly absorb information about our organization so they can represent us at events and in meetings with community groups and leaders. Strong verbal/written skills needed. S/he should be warm and easy-going and enjoy meeting people. It is crucial that they are responsible and that they will adhere to their schedule and responsibilities. This person should have basic Internet skills and be proficient at using Microsoft Word.
